High School Class of 2018

@frazzledazzle Happy birthday to your sister! And Happy Early Birthday to you too! <:-P

@ak2018 you’re so lucky your still has that! My school only recently started with Naviance and I think it’s primarily used for rec letters, but I’ve talked to the college counselor and she said that data of who gets accepted and not is what the school is trying to establish! so @marg532 same.

is this Hamilton scholarship nationwide or only applicable for certain states?

@wildguy57 It’s nationwide and 39 people are chosen to receive the award.

My school’s naviance is so screwed up like they didn’t even put my PSAT scores in right.

Also, at like all the top schools I’m interested in there’s no data on people from my school getting in in naviance… :/. I think my friend last year got waitlisted at either MIT or Harvard last year tho, and we’ve already had ED acceptances to Stanford and Harvard this year so I’m not sure what’s up with that.

My school’s Naviance is pretty nice. The interface for the college tabs has updated to look more aesthetically pleasing, but it lost out on a lot of its old functionality. The scattergrams have been updated though.
Our school’s averages for UChicago acceptances are 3.9 and 1560, so that gives me a glimmer of hope. Particularly if my SAT score makes up for my GPA.

On an unrelated note, is anyone noticing how multiple celebrities have been dying over the past few days? It’s literally so weird and sad. Billie Lourd literally lost both her mother and grandmother in last two days. :(( :((

My sister was devastated when she heard about Carrie Fisher…

So I literally just got an e-mail from Naviance saying that all rising seniors at my school will begin scheduling for next year through their English classes sometime at the end of January. I kind of feel like this is so soon, but I guess we should get it out of way now.

I’ve also been doing some research and I think I’m 99.9% sure I’ll be applying to VT ED! I know my stats might not be good, but I heard they have a really low denial rate during ED, so worst case scenario is that I get a straight-up denial. I mean they have a 69%-70% acceptance rate, so I’ll hopefully find myself on the better end of that rate. I have a really high interest in the school and I know coming from NOVA will be competitive, but I’ll definitely try.

@ak2018 Are you going to do Questbridge? You wouldn’t be able to apply to VT ED, but you could apply to MIT, University of Virginia, and many other schools w/ the chance of receiving a full ride.

@Hamlon I’ve thought above Questbridge multiple times, but I’m not exactly the best candidate (low-ish GPA, will not likely graduate in the top 5% - 10% of my graduating class). My family’s income is about $5K above the recommend income. I’ll definitely consider it, but plan B is to just find and apply for a bunch of scholarships. My parents do plan on helping me financially with college.

Speaking of scheduling (which doesn’t happen for me until around May), I got confirmation from my old Bio teacher that he’s going to teach an Infectious Diseases class next year! I’m planning on taking that, and dropping a class that I’m not super interested in. This way I have 4 years of science, instead of the 3 that I was planning on taking (the minimum science requirement in NY to graduate).

Would anyone like to read the essays I’ve been doing for my online class? Not to check them, but just if you want something interesting to read. I’ve done my essays on the importance of Earth’s Energy Budget and The CALIPSO Mission (they are explained in the essays). I’ll PM them to you.

@ak2018 sure

@ak2018 I’m interested; it sounds fascinating

So a few things:

I just find out that GMU requires freshmen to live on campus, unless I lived in a particular county, which I don’t. Which means no matter what, I’m going to be living in a dorm or apartment my freshman year.

GMU also has the option to submit a video essay instead of a traditional essay. I might take advantage of that, if it’s not too much trouble.

Do you guys plan on applying to the Honors College of your schools?

@ak2018 I plan on applying to the Honors College for the University of Oklahoma cause it would probably be a good community and if I go there I’ll have free tuition anyway so I won’t have to worry about money as much. For my instate colleges probably not because I’ll already most of my general ed classes done so it wouldn’t make sense to retake the honors versions, and it would make it take more time for me to graduate.

@ak2018 Dean’s Scholars and Plan II at University of Texas. DS sounds like a tight- knit community with a lot of benefits (free food once a week? Sign me up! :)) )

Also, LSA Honors and Telluride House at UMich. I loved spending the summer at Ann Arbor. The school kind of grew on me. Best thing about the campus? The cute devil squirrels.

Hey, everyone! I have been absent for a long time and hope you all haven’t forgotten about me!

Let me fill you in on what I’ve been up to:

  1. I’m in a different country right now and when I get back I’ll fill in on how the vaca was.
  2. That Macroeconomics class I took… got an A! If you don’t understand why this is so important, check out this post I wrote on October 22:
  1. Got my SAT score back and will retake in March... I'll share my scores once I am happy with it.
  2. Crap ton of school work has not allowed me to visit this site.

GLAD TO BE BACK

@apple1893 Welcome back, bro! Congrats on the class!

Did anyone get anything for the holidays? I’ve gotten about $103 and this is likely the richest I’ve ever been!
