High School Class of 2018

You know, one would think that after procrastinating on time consuming homework for so long, you would stop procrastinating so you could have a healthy sleeping pattern and less stress during the days leading up to the due date. But for some reason, I still procrastinate haha I think I’m mentally self-destructive in that way…

@Marg532 me af
like i plan on sleeping early tonight but i also have chem and history hw that i’m not done with

@DaEmmJay23 yeah i use the swipe thing i like it more than ios keyboard

Sigh Only after a break do you realize you’re months behind on classwork and homework and have several tests and quizzes over the span of two weeks. Jk :))

I still have this whole week off for break, and 3 presentations to make, a book to finish and a boat load of studying to do for finals in 2 weeks. Do I have any motivation for this? Not a chance, Hence why I’m on the forums pretending to be doing something mildly school related.

So I got my final exam score for the online multivariable differential calc class and did very, very poorly b-( I have the option of making it pass/fail, and I would barely pass that way, and my GPA won’t be affected. Is this a good idea? It’s not like anyone who looks at my transcript can assume I did worse than I actually did :))

@Soccer1235 Yeah, make it pass/fail.

@ak2018 That’s how I feel right now. Midterms are roughly two weeks away for me, and I’ve got to mentally prepare myself for the Pre-Calculus exam. :stuck_out_tongue:

I just submitted to an essay contest for the first time! I don’t feel like it was my best work, but I’m still a little excited nonetheless. I can’t help but daydream of what it would be like to win…

My teacher nominated me for the NCTE Achievement Awards in Writing! My school is having twelve kids compete for the three submission slots we’re eligible for. I’ve always been interested in entering prestigious writing contests, but I always convinced myself I wasn’t good enough. Its a great confidence boost to have my AP Lang teacher chose me and a few others but shush out of all her students. Maybe I have a shot after all!

Is course selection coming up for anyone else? We don’t get to choose anything at my school until after midterms, but some teachers are starting to talk about it now. This is what I’m thinking of going with:

AP Lit
AP Euro
AP Psych
AP Stat
AP Enviro Sci
H Latin IV
Classical Studies / Creative Writing (semester courses)
Lunch / TA (not sure if I want to be a TA or not yet)

Considering most of the AP’s are on the easy side, I don’t think this would be too bad. H Latin IV is mixed with H Latin III students, so all of the grammar concepts will just be a repeat of this year. AP Lit and AP Euro may be harder, but I love English and history, so I think I can handle them.

@LeopardFire Euro is a lot of work but it is 100% worth it. It’s been my favorite history class I’ve ever taken.

Ok, so I took the SAT Math Level 2 Barron’s Diagnostic Test and I got a 670. Considering that my pre-calc class has only covered three chapters (that we really learned in alg 2), I would call that a small victory, because I am so close to a 700+.

Starting 2017 on a good note!

Has anyone gotten any e-mails from certain colleges? I’m pretty it’s because I took the PSAT and I put my e-mail in. So far I’ve received mail from South Methodist University, George Washington University, and Swarthmore College.

@LeopardFire Course selection is sometime this month for us.

@ak2018 I think it’s because of the PSAT too. I took the PSAT my freshman year so I have been getting them since then. I have ~1,800 emails and I save them all in a folder so I will be able to see how many I have at the end of high school.

I will choose my classes later this month too but I don’t know what I will pick yet since I don’t want to quit Spanish and I will have exhausted all the Spanish classes by the end of this year. I am going to ask my Spanish teachers if I can do an independent study of some sort.

@Soccer1235 I think you should make it pass/fail. The last thing you want to do is ruin your college GPA right now, and I don’t think a “Pass” would look bad because you took the initiative to try the class out.

So, I just heard from my parents that we might not be able to afford me taking World History 2, a class I have to take in order to graduate with an advanced diploma, this summer. I could take the course in school next year, but that would mean taking away one of my APs next year. Our county only allows us to take seven actual classes a year. Thinking about this, I made up a few courses of action to go from here.

Here's my planned-out schedule for next year and their priorities:

PLTW Engineering Design and Development (High Priority, I’m pretty sure it would look bad if I didn’t take an engineering class after taking my first two.)

AP Computer Science A (Low Priority, High Interest) (I really want to take the class and doing so will allow me to skip the freshman Programming class I’ll likely have to take, if I pass the AP exam with a 4 or 5)

AP Physics C (High Priority, pretty much needed if I want to do engineering)

U.S. and Virginia Government (Required to Graduate)

AP Calculus AB (High Priority, needed if I want to do engineering)

AP Economics (Required to Graduate)

English 12 (Required)

Due to it being my only low priority class, if worse comes worse, AP Comp Sci A will have to be replaced by World History 2 in order to graduate with an advanced studies diploma. I really don’t want this to happen as I really want to enjoy senior year by taking a class I’d likely enjoy and be more interested in. There is, however, the option to change down and instead get a standard diploma. I’ll go to my counselor tomorrow to talk about the foreseen and unforseen consequences of doing so and if colleges really care. I would still graduate no matter what. Here are some choices I could make.

Choice #1: Take AP Comp Sci A and go for a standard diploma if the consequences aren’t too “life-altering”.

Choice #2: Take World History instead of AP Comp Sci A.

Choice #3: Take AP World History (Honors Version of World History 2) (The only problem that I have with this is that I honestly really don’t want to go down this route. I barely got through Pre-AP World History (Honors) last year with a B+, which was due to me getting an automatic 100% on the final because I pass advanced my SOL. Without this, I would’ve had a B. AP World History would probably kill me and my GPA :)) )

In all honesty, if there’s nothing wrong with it, I think I might be leaning towards getting a standard diploma. I know that it would be more important to take World History 2, but (don’t take this the wrong way) it’s highly likely I will take it in college as a General Ed requirement, so I wouldn’t really be missing anything. Also, not taking a class over the summer would give me the chance to actually do some programs over the summer, which would be cool. I am planning to call some of my intended colleges and see what they think.

Again, this is all based on IF my parents can’t pay for it. I would use my money, but it’s nowhere near enough to pay for the $450 summer class.

What do you guys think?

@ak2018 Are you free/reduced lunch? Because in our school district kids with free/reduced lunch get some need base aid for summer school if they really need to take a certain class. So I would try asking if there are any such opportunities at your school district

@Tobster18 I’m actually not, despite the fact that a good portion of kids that live near me are.

I have also noticed that there has been a spike in college emails. I opened my inbox yesterday to find mail from about ten schools that I had never heard from.

I guess I’ll take the P. Thanks for the advice!

Coming in to report my inevitable death. There’s a week left in the semester and I have two labs, at least 100 pages of my AP Bio textbook to read, three tests, two writing assignments, a bunch of smaller assignments, and exams. I’m saying goodbye to my GPA because I’m 100% going to fail my AP Comp Sci exam. Additionally, a new season of Sherlock is airing and so I have to take a lot of time out of my schedule to revel in angst and theorize. Nice knowing you guys.

Course selection is February but the GCs have already had meetings to discuss courses for next year. I think I’m taking

AP Stats
AP CALC BC
AP French
AP Econ/AP Gov
AP Physics C
English 4
