High School Class of 2018

I’m back from my spring break vacation and I had 98 notifications from this thread. Congrats to everyone on their awards and summer programs they got into.

Sadly I wasn’t able to really study for AP’s this break but I really needed a break from school work. I’m took AP psych online as well this year and haven’t really had to work hard in that class (since it was easy I decided to take another easy AP class online next year) so this next week and a half I have to bust my tail. I’m using the Barron’s book to study and overall it seems like a great tool. I’m waiting until I take my psych test (Monday) then I’m going to study for APUSH. I only want to focus on one at a time.

I’m basically done with my APUSH grades for the year since we took our last test the week before break. I got an 80, but for the first time my teacher is adding a few point curve since no one received about an 90. Therefore I officially have an A for the year in that class which I am so excited because I’ve busted my tail all year. Other than that if there are no freak grade in my classes or on any of my finals I should have all A’s for the year. This hasn’t happened since middle school, although last year I missed it by only 1 point in one class.

Hope everyone had a great Easter break! Only a month or so (3 weeks for me) left of school until we are seniors. We can push through this!

@madison2000 I am doing the exact same thing. I took AP psych easy class online, but I feel like I am not fully AP ready so I am going hard in the Barrons study guide.

I read one of the chapters and I have honestly gotten more out of that chapter than I did from my class while learning about it. I really want a 3 at least but if I don’t pass it won’t be the end of the world.

I visited Simmons College today! It’s women’s college in Boston. While it is pretty small (~1,700 undergrads) that is offset by its location, so you get both a close community and the opportunity to get away from everyone else if need be. Plus, you can apply for a full ride scholarship that around 10 students receive each year, which I think I have a shot at.

@madison2000 What resources are planning to use for APUSH? I’ve found Adam Norris and will most likely use Crash Course, but I’ll probably have to go find more.

I visited BU and Emerson today! I was on the fence about applying to BU, but now that I visited, I’m in love! I felt comfortable on campus and I really could see myself going there. Emerson was nice, although I’m not sure how I feel about a school that small. However, I do love the fact that it’s right on the Boston Common. The march for science was going on today, and I had a great view of it from the one of the buildings at Emerson. This was my first time in Boston and I absolutely love the city, even though my visit was short.

Other than that, I start my job this week! Tomorrow (after a 5 hour drive home) I have a simulation day just to get accustomed to the job. I work at an amusement park, and it opens on Friday, so I’ll work 6 hours that night. Saturday is my prom so I have off, but the next day I work 6.5 hours. I’m going to be dead tired, but at least I know I’m making money to help pay for college. Plus, I’m making more money than my brother did when he worked there, and I get air conditioning lol.

@carmen00 What was the campus feel for BU? I wasn’t able to visit when I was in Boston last weekend because it was booked solid.
I wish my school had a junior prom. We only have a senior prom. : (

@LeopardFire @madison2000 I found the CrashCourse US History videos to be very helpful. CrashCourse is amazing in general, honestly.

If anyone is considering applying to MIT next year, I did a campus visit last week and can answer questions you may have about the school.

@frazzledazzle it was much more of a campus than I thought it would be. I thought it would truly be like “the city is your campus” but it did have a campus feel to it. There were a decent amount of students walking around for a rainy Saturday morning. I had read that BU was super preppy and uptight, but I didn’t really get that feel on campus.

I like the fact that BU guarantees housing for all four years too. It would be extremely convenient to be able to stay on campus all four years, and I think the fact that the large majority of students live on campus truly gives it more of a community feel. Personally, I wanted both an actual campus and easy access to the city, which makes BU perfect. It has everything on campus, but I like to explore, so I could do that too. Also, one thing I like about Boston in general is just the character of all the old buildings. Plus, any school that has a lazy river is a school for me lol.

But yeah, I didn’t think I’d like BU that much, but after visiting, it has moved to the top of my list. I just got that gut feeling when I was on campus that said “I could spend my next four years here.”

And yeah lots of schools in my area have a junior prom but idk why. We have a junior prom and a senior farewell. They’re both basically the same thing except that prom is held at another location while farewell is held at our school.

Accepted BU student here (class of 2021) and possibly committing to it. I visited during an open house for accepted students and I agree, it impressed me greatly. It certainly does not have that gated community feel to it but you can tell that you’re on university grounds. The students, or at least those that hosted us and acted as tour guides, were fantastic and very driven folk and the deans/advisors that spoke were very welcoming and open.

BU has a very strong emphasis on research and is very proud of it. If you get accepted into it, you are accepted into the entire university and are free to transfer between majors and even colleges with exception to the engineering college. The only real downsides that I see personally for BU are its cost (at a whopping 70k although my personal financial aid lowered that to approx 39k) and its age - the facilities are certainly a little on the older side.

Good luck senior year and hopefully when you all apply to colleges it won’t be at record high numbers like we were (BU had ~70k applicants and 3.5k got in)!

For APUSH videos will be my go to. I know the specific information but sometimes just get time periods mixed up. I also have the Barron’s for APUSH which I will use in correlation with the videos. I felt a lot more confident on my last cumulative test I took because I used Adam Norris videos and took quick videos off of those. For previous tests (including my midterm) I would just read over my notes. My teacher also gives like quarterly test, which is cumulative, it makes me go back and study. Therefore since I just took my third quarter test and had a timed FRQ and DBQ (that could’ve been on anything and didn’t know until I opened up the booklet (could be considered a mock AP test but my school doesn’t have official ones)) I have had to go back and study all my stuff recently. I’m glad my teacher did that so I’m not stressing out the week of the test. My teacher has also had weekly review question sections from a website that have caused me to go back and use my notes.

I feel very confident on the APUSH test. I expect to get at least a 4 or even a 5 by looking at my last quarter test and last FRQ and DBQ.

The FRQ and DBQ have always been so much easier for me while the Mulitple Choice has been a struggle all year. What about y’all? I know it really just depends on the person.

@ak2018 I got in!

Hey Guys!

I had the craziest last two weeks.

Last Friday, before Easter, I had a really fun time at my city’s Spring Break Carnival. I went alone, but hung out with some friends. I actually felt alive :))

This Thursday, I had a math test, which I failed lol, and on Friday, I had a AP Chem test. 15 minutes before we were supposed to finish the test, the power at our school shut off. I thought I either died or WW3 finally started :)) We didn’t get to finish our test, which was a multiple choice practice version of an AP exam, but we will next class.

Also, a girl indirectly asked me to prom and I said I wasn’t going because I was too poor :(( But I think I might be able to go now because I just realized I have $17 in my bank. I might do a promposal! She’s a programmer, so I have a few ideas!

I also finally finished my college class with an A, got a 99% on the final project, and will unofficially, be going to the NASA summer academy!

Also, I finally updated my college list!

Will Apply To (Early Decision/Early Action)

Virginia Tech (ED)
UVA (EA)
GMU (EA)
University of Pittsburgh (EA)

Will/Might Apply to (Regular Decision) (If I don’t get into VT)

Carnegie Mellon University
JMU
University of Rochester
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI)
Northeastern University

To save my money, I’m probably going to only apply to the EA and ED colleges first, then use my Winter Break to apply to more schools if I don’t get into VT. There’s an exception though. If I get a 1350+ on my next SAT, I’ll change up my list and make VT RD instead. If I don’t, I’ll take CMU and URoch out and look for some more.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought if you apply early decision to one school you can’t send in any other early decision or early action (since they are normally due around the same time) applications. I know this is true for one of the schools I’m applying to but none of the other schools do early decision.

@madison2000 I would imagine you could still apply EA to other schools since there’s the possibility of you getting deffered/rejected.

@madison2000 @ak2018 EA schools allow you to apply to other EA schools. ED schools do not. EA Restrictive (for example Harvard) do not allow you to apply to other schools but if you are accepted you are not obligated to go like a ED decision.

This means if you have a single ED school on your list or EA Restrictive, some schools will NOT allow you to apply to EA schools during the early round. You should check VT’s policy

@Syrxis You can apply to other EA schools even if you’re applying to a school ED. The thing you’re barred from doing is applying to an ED and REA/SCEA school or 2 EDs or 2 REA/SCEA

Brown’s Policy:

  • []If you choose to apply to Brown under Early Decision we ask that you not submit an application to another institution under another Early Decision plan, or a single-choice Early Action plan.
    [
]If you are admitted under our Early Decision plan you will be required to withdraw all pending applications—including those you may have already submitted to Regular, Rolling, or (open) Early Action programs.

Virginia Tech is a public school, so there should be no issue for @ak2018 with regards to EA/ED policies.

If you apply ED soemwhere, you can still apply EA to other schools. But if you get accepted by your ED school, your other acceptances are basically void because you have to commit to your ED school (unless you have certain financial circumstances)

For SCEA, since it is single choice, you cannot apply to other private schools EA but you can apply to public schools EA. At least that’s Harvard’s policy.
