Thinking of taking AP human geography online next year does anyone have any suggestions?
That’s what I signed up for. Honestly it’s one of those things that if I don’t end up liking it I can drop it.
Hey Everyone,
So I’ve had a messy past few hours. On top of AP exams, I’m currently experiencing another one of my famous “I’m so smart, yet so dumb” feelings and I’m getting depressed over something pretty minor in the grand scheme of things, but will serve to me as a reminder to never let snakes back into my life!!! :))
I'm also doing this really stupid thing where I'm equating the amount of APs everyone else is taking to their intellect as proof of my inferiority complex and then I realized, once again, that arbitrary numbers are stupid and arbitrary. :)) Anyone else feel like they have this same complex?
Also, funny thing just happened as I was writing this. I REALIZED WHO THE HECK I WAS!!! :)) I am a STRONG, INDEPENDENT BLACK MAN who don’t need no “low” numbers to keep me grounded!!! snaps fingers in Z-formation I’ve worked my butt off too long to give up now! Sure, I’ve had my fill in slip-ups and epic fails this year, but I’m tired of letting those insignificant things rot my brain. I need to remember what I worked my butt off to do to get to this point! I’ve worked my butt off to get into my NASA program! I’ve worked my but off to get good grades this year. I’ve worked my butt off to get into SAMS and NOVEC Youth Tour!!! And most of all, I accomplished 99% of this by myself. When it came to all of these things, all my parents did was sign when needed. I took all the stress and anxiety upon myself, where it really should be and will be most of my life. I’m at least taking care of what needs to be done and if I make mistakes along the way, give it a minute to process and MOVE ON!! As you guys take these AP exams, just remember this: You are all strong, independent, (insert race and gender here :)) ) who don’t need no Ivy League acceptances as a source of validation. You guys have already displayed motivation just by being on this site! Based on how much you guys care about school and your futures alone, you’re already eons ahead of the pack!! The Ivy’s are literally less than 10 of 4000 individual colleges. Once we all finally get into where we all want to go, we’ll likely look at this thread and laugh at all the anxiety we were under and question if it was worth potentially getting gray-hairs earlier! :))
I wanted to take the time and post this because it's getting close to the end of junior year and many of us will know where we're going to college A YEAR FROM YESTERDAY!! You don't have to end the year strong, just don't fall down!!
ALSO, BIG NEWS FROM ME! I GOT INTO THE NASA SUMMER ACADEMY! Here’s the letter:
Dear [My Name],
You are invited to attend the 2017 Summer Academy for the Virginia Earth System Science Scholars (VESSS) program. There is no cost for you to attend the one-week Academy at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, VA.
Upon successful completion of the pre-Academy online component and Academy coursework, you are eligible to receive one college credit from Thomas Nelson Community College, GOL 195. Please look at the Summer Academy 2017 online course website. The registration form is due by May 27, 2017, by 11:55 PM.
To acknowledge your acceptance into one of the two Academies, please log in to the Summer Academy 2017 online course using your current login and password information. We have set up a “Summer Academy Confirmation Survey” on the course site that should take no more than 10 minutes to complete. This survey will allow you to accept your invitation beginning EXACTLY at 4:00 PM EDT on Wednesday, May 3, 2017. You will need to complete the “Summer Academy Confirmation Survey” by Sunday, May 7th at 11:55 PM. Within the survey are questions regarding your preference of week to attend, the team on which to participate, and polo shirt size (so that we may provide you with free shirts for the week). We realize that this is an incredibly busy time of year, but the sooner you respond to the survey, the more likely you will receive your first choices of week and team.
We have also included a Food and Meal Requirements survey. This survey needs to be completed by May 14, 2017, by 11:55 PM. This includes whether you only eat vegetarian food, have a specific problem digesting certain foods, allergies, or other situations. This survey is not for you to indicate foods that you simply do not like.
Also within the Summer Academy 2017 online course you will find the following documents in the “Summer Academy 2017 Forms” folder:
Parental Consent
VESSS Student Medical Release Form
Good Behavior Contract
Commitment Form
NASA Media Release From
VSGC Talent Authorization and Release Form
Please submit all forms by May 24th via the course website on. Each form listed above has an associated assignment to which you can upload your filled out the form. Images of signed forms are acceptable. If you encounter any issues with submitting these forms via the online course software provided, please contact our office. If we do not receive your forms before May 24th, we cannot permit you to attend.
You will find more detailed information about the Academy in the Summer Academy 2017 online course. There will be a Closing Ceremony on the last day of each Academy to which you may invite your family. We will provide more information directly to your parents about the Closing Ceremony via email and at registration on the first day of the Academy. We will provide an assignment to upload the names of your family and/or guests that will attend the Closing Ceremony of the Academy to which you are assigned.
Unfortunately, due to heightened security at all NASA facilities only U.S. citizens or Permanent Residents may attend the Closing Ceremony. We understand the disappointment and inconvenience this may cause, and we truly regret that we are not able to make exceptions.
We look forward to meeting you at the Summer Academy! And we thank you in advance for completing the survey and returning the necessary forms promptly.
Again, I’ve so worked (my butt off :)) )so hard for this opportunity! The very opportunity that is going to ensure me a career!!
So, I end this long post asking this question, what have you all done this year that you’re proud of? Did you work your butt off?
@ak2018 Here’s what I’m proud of this year:
*Actually getting help and going on medication to treat my chronic depression and anxiety (I’ve been dealing with this stuff since 7th grade)
*Not having a C grade on my semester transcript. I had at least 2 each year for freshman and sophomore year.
*Being accepted to SSP. I never thought in a million years that it would happen. It’s a milestone in the progress I’ve made throughout high school and I’m using it as a catalyst for future success (getting good grades, for one), including my new major goal of getting accepted to my dream school - MIT.
*Improving immensely in my skill playing the flute. My instructor told me yesterday that she’s proud of me for my improvements and how well I’m doing in tackling a “monster piece” - Khachaturian’s Concerto for Flute and Orchestra: II. Andante sostenuto.
That was such a good idea to ask those questions! It really made me think introspectively about my school year and what I’ve done so far and realize what I’ve done. Thank you!
In other news, I got my invitation letter for academic awards in the mail today! I don’t know if I’ll be getting a special award at the ceremony, but I know already that I’m getting the Junior Award for Academic Excellence. I’ll find out at the ceremony on the 17th if I receive anything fancy.
Aw @ak2018 that was such an inspirational post
APs definitely don’t equal intelligence…a lot of schools don’t let students take APs, others have restrictions on the subjects (for me, we don’t have a lot of them ie Human Geo or Comp Sci or any Art ones and we are not allowed to take Humanities APs like Lit, APUSH, until senior year…)! You always post the most comprehensive things haha!
Congrats to you for NASA! And to @frazzledazzle for everything on there hehe y’all are so talented!
I guess I’ll continue the pride thread! I’ll include just a few more personal instead of extracurricular things. I’m a sucky bragger and it makes me feel weird although I LOVE when other people talk about their accomplishments. Idk I’m just weird.
What I’m proud of (Junior Year):
-Not crying in front of teachers (yet. I cried in front of nearly every teacher last year as 10th grade was a HUGE transition from an easier freshman year for me…)
-Not failing any tests (yet. I failed probably like 30 tests and quizzes in total last year. Like a 50. Or even a 30…)
-Not cursing at my principal or getting emotional (he messed up my schedule for next year, won’t let me take a class I’ve wanted to take since 10th grade…)
-Making more friends, lots of senior friends, even talking to sophomores (I’ve never had classes with anyone younger than me oops. There’s 2 sophomores in my AP Chem class so I’ve talked to them…big step for me lol)
-Learning to give up ECs that I do not like (track and all state orchestra)
-Recovering from failures that normally would haunt me for a while (messing up treasury calculations for a club by a decent amount, losing the nomination for gov school, bumping into another car on my first day with my permit…)
-Joining this CC group since it’s been really fun and supportive! <3
@julia35002 Depends on what else you’re taking next year. AP Human was very interesting for me, but if you don’t like the subject matter it will be painful. You might want to skip the AP exam though because many schools only give elective credit.
Anyone have any resources to cram AP Macro? I bought the ACDC Econ packet, but I am not completely sure that it goes over everything that will be on the test. I still haven’t got around to international trade. Just want/need a 4.
Also for anyone taking the AP US Gov exam, Keith Hughes has a 2-hour live stream starting now.
You all are incredible and have done amazing things - I haven’t done much beyond Johnny High School Stuff this year, but I’m proud of a lot of it.
- I'm proud of getting elected to my school's executive student board (about 16 people ran for VP, four got elected)
- I got unanimously voted by the leaving Varsity seniors plus next year's returning Varsity players as volleyball captain (also club coach I have an actual chance at all american next year and definitely at all state!!)
- I was named a student director of the Snowball Program next year, which is probably my favorite activity at school
- I went to Kairos, I loved it, I met new people (yes, I am a Jew that went to a Christian Retreat, a number of Jewish people actually go lol)
- I was a tech director for the Variety Show and didn't have a breakdown once! Plus I co chaired radiothon.
- I got a pretty sizeable role (Lazar Wolf in Fiddler) for my school musical, I mostly get ensemble roles.
- I made it to nationals for speech and DECA
- I got a really good ACT score (34)
- I had my first A in a math class first semester!
- I started dating this guy I've had a crush on for about three years or so and I've been best friends with since middle school and he makes me really happy
- Staying close with a ton of people and meeting a lot of new people as well
- I guess opening myself up to new experiences in general? I did things this year (Kairos and Chairing Radiothon) that I wouldn't have imagined doing a year ago, and they've really benefited me.
Praying for good APUSH and Lang scores, I’ve been on too much of a roll these past few weeks lol
I’m really loving the positivity on this thread! Since we’re all listing things we’re proud of this year, here’s mine:
Junior year:
- I studied >8 hours on a Saturday for the AP Chem test. I’ve had so many days where I thought I just couldn’t do school anymore, but being able to do that for a full day and having a really long study group with friends just showed me that I can be incredibly focused with enough willpower
- I went to a school dance, and HAD FUN! Prom was such an amazing night, and just looking back on the lonely introverted hermit nerd freshman that I used to be, it reminded me how far I’ve come.
- I learned to drive! And got a car! I can do things now!
- I played a huge role in running a regional Junior Classical League convention. The other state officers had prior commitments and couldn’t make it, leaving me to basically run it by myself (but I did have a lot of help from other people). I’m happiest when I can do things and organize things and it’s just so great for my self-confidence.
- Had my first relationship - ended pretty quick bc we’re both really busy (we’re still friends lmao), but just having it for the time that I did made me realize a lot about what I wanted out of life right now
- I made a lot of friends this year. Friends that I could regularly talk to and hang out with outside of school. Before, I wasn’t really tight with a lot of these people, but being able to drive and hang out with them just opened me up significantly socially. I’ve seen and done some exciting things (to me at least) that I’ll remember for a long time.
Sidenote: College commitment day was yesterday, and just seeing all my friends go to these amazing places gives me so much inspiration and happiness. I have so much hope for the future
Ahh college commitment day made me so sad. I have a lot of friends graduating this year. There are some who so important to me and I love beyond belief and who are also moving really far away next year. College visits should be great though - I have like six close friends at my dream school now. I was almost as sad as when my brother left for Vandy earlier this year - but I go down to Nashville with friends to visit him at least twice a month. So many people I know got into incredible schools and it just filled me with a lot of nostalgia and hope too.
It makes me sad too especially since my three best friends are graduating. That really leaves me with no one.
Here’s what I’m proud of
-Partciptating in DECA states in Orlando
-I got accepted into NHS
-Accpted into the ACE internship program at my school. I’m so excited and next school year during the first quarter, we will prep for internship interviews.
-Won the blue carpet award from my schools for being most persistent from my club advisor. I mean I was told my the schools activity director who also approves clubs and their activities that I should give up on trying the create this club during my freshman year. This club is my absolute baby and I’m so proud of how I’ve been able to mentor younger girls in their journey of high school and even younger 7th and 8th graders. But I definitely could have done more which leads me to…
-My depression has become very severe to the point where it has affected my ability to complete homework assignments at home, so the work would continue to pile up. I’m a very stubborn person who would rather struggle than ask for help, but I finally talked to my guidance counselor and she gave me an extension for the third quarter. It was still rough to get the work done with the extension and do all my current work for the 4th quarter, but I’m making slow progress everyday to being my usual productive self. Although I wish I did more with my clubs I’m very proud that I was able to do as much as I did with my situation.
So very lackluster year because of everything that’s going on in my personal life but I’m finally seeing a therapist after dealing with this since I was 13, so I’m looking forward to next school year and this summer.
What I’m proud of
Making it out of Hell year alive.
Edit: Almost making it out of Hell year alive, still got a few weeks left.
One of my friend’s friends (I know her in science bowl) decided on Stanford with hours before the deadline. She had a tough time trying to decide between Stanford and Yale. She spent all of last week visiting the 3 schools she was choosing between - the aforementioned two and Princeton. She’s top of the class, very smart, and hardworking, so it’s great that she’s going places, even though that is literally all the way across the country.
Also, when are April SAT scores coming out? I think someone mentioned it before but I have completely forgotten. It would be great to know when so I can keep my anxiety at bay.
Most of my achievements are personal ones, but here are mine:
- Became president of newspaper
- Got my first job
- Became heavily involved in both newspaper and debate
- Came out of my shell and actually asked teachers for help when needed
- Started to connect with my teachers
- Began to truly value my education
- Found what I am truly passionate about
- Finally quitting soccer after wanting to quit since freshman year
- Budgeting my time during this super stressful and busy year
- Actually studying for tests
@oPhilippos Decision Day is so fun and heartwarming! My county’s twitter is retweets #decisionday tweets. One girl in my county got into Cornell, many others into UVA or VT!!!
@frazzledazzle April 5th scores came out today. April 11th scores come out on the 10th pretty sure.
I got a 1350 on my SAT!! That’s 160 points up from my PSAT, I thought if anything I would do worse!! Now I might be able to reach 1400+ in June
I got a 1370 (700 R / 670 M)! That’s only 30 points below my goal of a 1400! Now to study over the summer to get a 1450+ (my end-game goal)!
@kassh4 Thanks!
@LeopardFire @frazzledazzle Congrats! I hope you both are able to reach 1400+
