High School Class of 2018

I am also 16. The majority of students at my school have birthdays in December, April, and May. Not sure why. I have a summer birthday so I’m younger than all of my friends. It bothered me before because I got my permit and license later, but now that I have my license, I don’t care too much.

17 (5 months now ahh)

My school just cancelled AP Physics C because only 3 kids signed up for it in a school of 2,500. 8-| Oddly enough it would have been a class of only girls which would have balanced out this year’s all-male class. The teacher who has always taught the class is leaving next year, so I can’t even do a guided independent study. Hopefully I can get a scholarship through Johns Hopkins or Northwestern and take it online. I won’t get hs credit though.

@acomfysofa What’s UBC’ s reputation? I’m just about done with the US and am actually considering applying north of the border. Ironically, Vancouver is a lot closer than most of my US options (7 hour drive vs. 7 hour flight) lol.

@Hamlon 3/2500 is insanely low. Are the other Physics classes packed, or are all physics classes pretty empty?

@acomfysofa I’m 15! Hehe. I don’t turn 16 till December…late December.

So now that AP’s are pretty much over, what are your schedules? We should ask questions about what certain classes are like.

Here’s mine:
AP Psychology
Economics and Personal Finance
AP Physics C
U.S. Government
AP Calculus BC
GEMS 12
AP Literature

Online (Year): AP Computer Science A (All Year)
MEC 100 - Introduction to Engineering

Senior Schedule:
AP Calc BC
AP Lit
AP Physics C
AP US Gov
AP French
Gifted Mentorship (Still struggling to find one, might just drop and have early dismissal)

Current College List:

Reach
Williams - Absolute #1, want to apply ED but parents are hesitant
Dartmouth
Cornell
Colby
Michigan (OOS)

Match
Colgate
Hamilton
Bucknell
Washington and Lee

Safeties
Penn State (In State)
Miami (OH)

Problem for me is I’m not too happy with any of my matches besides Colgate because they lack a strong math/stat department.

Senior schedule: (only fall is confirmed bc thats the college life, but all are dual enrollment) Also I forgot most of the course numbers but the first number is the one that gives you the idea of what level it is so oh well.

Fall:
CSCD 211 -Programming 2 (APCS counts as Programming 1 so thats cool)
MENG 207 - Electricity ( it’s a prereq for the robotics class I wanna take)
PHYS 221/164 General Physics 4 lecture/lab
MATH 2?? - Linear Algebra

Winter:
Tech 3?? - Technology and World Civilization
PHIL 210 - Critical Thinking or COMM ??? - Mass Media in the Information Society (both fill the same high school graduation requirement so I don’t really care)
MENG 2?? - Statics
MATH 4?? - Parital Differential Equations (maybe, we’ll see if it fits)

Spring:
MENG 2?? - Dynamics
MENG 2?? - Strength of Materials
MENG 385 - Robotics and Automation
maybe a 4th class but idk we’ll see how I feel.

Haha and please don’t ask me about my college list it’s kinda a mess rn.

For senior year, I’m in between a few classes.

Option 1:
Calc 3/Linear Algebra (DE online)
AP Literature
AP Phsyics 2
AP Chemistry

Option 2:
Calc 3/Linear Algebra (DE online)
AP Literature
AP Physics 2
AP Comp Sci A

Option 3:
Calc 3 (county online)
AP Literature
AP Physics 2
AP Comp Sci Principles
AP Psychology

For schools I’m looking at:

Northwestern
UMD College Park
UNC Chapel Hill
Harvard
Princeton
MIT
Illinois Champaign-Urbana
UChicago
Georgia Tech
Virginia Tech
Maryland Baltimore College

Pre-Calculus 12/Calculus 12 or IB Math SL 12 (depends on which will fit for my schedule, guidance counselor isn’t sure :/)
IB Physics HL 12
IB Chemistry HL 12
Advanced English 12
Global History 12

I think our schedules are finalized but I’m not exactly sure but this is what I signed up for.

AP Calc BC
AP Physics C
AP Lit
AP Econ(Macro+Micro)
AP Spanish
Gov 2/Anatomy
Brit Lit/Sociology

Next year is going to be hell especially with college apps and stuff.

@kassh4 I’m making my apps and doing SATs this year so I don’t have to worry about it for senior year. Might want to consider it to have one less thing to check off

Senior schedule option A:
AP French
AP Literature
AP Calculus AB
AP Chemistry
Honors Band

Option B:
AP French
AP Literature
AP Calculus AB
AP Physics C Mechanics / Electricity & Magnetism

For both of the options AP Literature could also be Senior English lvl. 1. I don’t know what class I’ll be in yet.

College list

Reach (I need to narrow it down):
Harvard
Columbia
Princeton
Caltech
MIT (my fave)

Match:
BU
Oberlin
Case Western Reserve
McGill

Safety:
UMaine

It’s very hard to narrow down schools. All of my reaches have different things that I like about that makes it difficult to choose between them without adding them back onto my list later on.

Final senior year schedule:
AP Calc BC
AP English Lit
Graphic Design
Physics
German III
Peer Tutoring
Anatomy and Physiology (1st semester)
AP Psychology (2nd semester)

I decided to give myself a break next year. I got so stressed this month and decided that I couldn’t keep doing that to myself. Plus this gives me more time to focus on college apps, work, and extracurriculars.

I’ve been working with my Matriculate advisor to put together a list of potential colleges. I’m supposed to have an updated list by May 15, so I’ll probably post it here when I’m done!

Senior Year Schedule:

AP Lit
AP US Gov
AP Calc AB
AP Human Geo (Online)
Chemistry Honors
Nutrition Honors
Anatomy (Online for Semester 1)
Forensic Science (Online for Semester 2)

College List:

UNC Chapel Hill
University of Gorgia
University of Alabama
University of South Carolina (don’t love but would a decent backup option)
Wake Forest University

I used to not be attracted to large public universities, but now that’s the main ones that I am looking at.

@acomfysofa Thanks for reminding me that I still have to apply to college next year! :)) I’ll try and see if I can get some stuff off of my list. I honestly just realized how busy I’m going to be this summer. I literally leave school a week early to travel around and tour DC, then I’m going 8 days to do whatever I want at home, then I go to NASA Langley in Hampton, VA and then 12 hours after that I’m on the road to Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh for six weeks. Four days after I get back, I start my AP CS class online and then I go to school two weeks after that. It’ll definitely be a busy summer, bit it should be pretty fun. I’m going to visit VT (finally), Christopher Newport University, Carnegie Mellon, and UPitt over the summer too. I heard if you visit UPitt this summer, you won’t have to pay an app fee.

But I’ll probably end up spending those 8 days having fun and starting on my common app and other college essays.

@neptuna My Matriculate advisor has definitely been a big help!

Also, would anyone mind helping me with a task my Matriculate advisor gave me?

My task is to: try and find some good liberal arts with pretty good engineering programs, try to find some good engineering schools in the western and southern part of the country (preferably not in California or Texas :)) ), and find some OOS safety schools.

If anyone has some ideas, please share.

I think it’s crazy that for the past year all I have been thinking about was applying to colleges, and now we are about to in a couple of months.

@ak2018 Harvey Mudd is A1. It’s in Cali but it is part of the Claremont Colleges which is super cool, and the school is pretty small prob close to 1000 kids so that means you’ll really get to know your professors and stuff which is great of LOR. It’s a reach school tho so idk how much that helps.
