High School Class of 2018

Tuesday I have a Theology final and Spanish 3 final. Yay two finals on my birthday… Thursday I have an English final that’s really long but it’s supposed to be easy. Then I’m finally a senior! Not looking forward to writing my essays this summer.

@ak2018 In your robotics team’s defense it’s really really hard to get rookie team members involved due to lack of commitment and lack of stuff to do until build season and a learning curve. It’s something my team’s been struggling with for a while. You really have to stick it out through build season and competitions and try and get involved in as much as possible.

On another note, my family drove over to Seattle after school today and I’m gonna be visting UW’s campus tommorow!

The seniors at my school are graduating at 4pm this saturday (today) and I cannot be more emotional. Since our school is small, the band usually plays pomp and circumstance (the graduation/wedding? song) and i’m playing the painful trumpet part that has the melody. It’s going to be hell but at the same time i’m going to be such a proud parent for all my friends graduating. I’m going to be the proudest most emotional mom there lmao. I’m not ready for them to leave me

@snowfairy137 Our problem is that we had too many people, not enough jobs, and this was during build season. Those with less experience, including the freshman, were made to pretty much sit back and wait for something to do. The upperclassmen pretty much handle a lot of things, while the underclassmen watch and hope to do something. I know that in a team, every small action matters, but maybe things would be a better learning experience for the freshmen if they were given a little more responsibility. I’ve heard from a few freshmen that because of this, they’ll probably stick with VEX. They were actually pretty committed too. And based off of other teams, this actually happens a lot.

@oPhilippos My school is not small but they make the band and orchestra perform at graduation anyway. Pomp and circumstance is painful especially if there are a lot of people bc we have to play it over and over till everyone sits down. Imo though, the melody is a little better than the accompaniment (I’ve done both as 1st and 2nd violin in different years ).

Does anyone know when you should guess and when you should omit on subject tests? If you have the math behind it can you include that as well? Thanks

@kashh4 There is a guessing penalty on subject tests. From what I’ve heard and a bit of my own experience, unless you’ve narrowed down your choices and can make an educated guess, omit. You are scored only on the bubbles you fill out, not the work in the test booklet. Even if you got some of the math on a problem, if your final answer is incorrect, you will be docked points.

Do counselors and teachers have to fill out a recommendation for every school you apply to on Common App? My school uses Naviance, but I have yet to figure out how it works with college apps.

Just noticed we have more posts than the Seniors!

@Hamlon they just fill out one recommendation and it gets sent to every school

@carmen00 Thanks!

Right. My letters for our current juniors have been uploaded to Naviance. When the Com,on App goes live in August I’ll go back and upload them there as well, in addition to filling out the common App checklist on each of those kids. College Placement does the rest.

Just a gentle nudge of advice from a mom and SAT prep teacher:

The Common App essay prompts have been out for ages. This summer is the time for Juniors to get those essays written!!! There’s no good reason to wait until school is back in session–with tests and quizzes and papers and projects, not to mention all those extra curricular activities. Get your essays written-- and your applications ready to go-- before Labor Day.

*sigh
My school was trying to get us to start a JA club but I wasn’t elected Company President and I got so mad. The guy they elected, I’m better than him, no joke. It’s not fair. I have great ideas, I know what to do, whereas he doesn’t have a clue. If I abandon them, they’ll fail. I know it. I’m not bragging, just saying the godawful truth. I still resent them. It truly hurts. The guy’s an academic. He doesn’t have a single entrepreneurial bone in his body. He’s my friend and I’m sorry but it’s true. *sigh.

So, if you guys were in my position, would you let them fail? Or help anyway, because they don’t have a clue. They just want to add it to their ECs and it’s making me angry. Many of them are just like: I’m a member, write my name. Jumping in and out. I’m angry but I also think it’s sort of naive. I think I should just swallow my pride and do something. But I can’t shake the feeling of wanting them to suffer.

So, honestly, what would you do if you were me? #MajorTeenageDrama

@gigichuck A similar thing happened to me this past week. I lost the election for Student Council President to someone who’s way less qualified than I am. What I’m doing from here on out through next year is swallowing my pride and being supportive of them. Trust me, I want to see things burst into flames under him, but I don’t want to see the Council I have been a part of and loved for the past three years to burst into flames as well. In the end, I suggest being supportive of their endeavors and not outwardly express your displeasure - it would reflect poorly on you. None of this matters years down the road, anyway.

Also, we reached 800 pages!!! <:-P <:-P <:-P

Apparently, because of my IB courses, on my senior-year schedule I might have three off-block periods every two days (out of a four block schedule). Either that or it’ll alternate between one/two off-blocks everyday.

Really happy to know that! For me, I learn faster and better reading from a textbook than from a teacher (though teachers are essential for me to ask questions and understand it thorougly).

@Hamlon I’m 99.9% sure it’s mainly because of me. :))

@hamlon yay! I remember always being annoyed a couple years ago cause the class of 2019 threat was more active than us.

@snowfairy137 OMG I REMEMBER THAT TOO! wow i’ve been on this thread for a while
