High School Class of 2018

@snowfairy137 You’re a junior and you’re taking all your classes DE? That isn’t offered where I live. I’ll have to wait for senior year to do all my classes DE.

So although I got a 558 on my writing SOL, I got a 475 on my Reading SOL, so I don’t get 100% on the final, which means I’m getting a B in AP Lang. It looks like this I’m gonna end out this year with 2 A’s, a B+, and 4 Bs, but at least it’s almost over. The final 10 days are upon me.

We had a sub in 3rd period and I was forced to listen to the most depressing conversation.

There’s a large amount of top 10 seniors in this specific class and all they talked about the entire period was how they can’t even hold a conversation or associate themselves with someone below a certain rank and that certain people are ranked higher than their intelligence suggests. One dude talked about a female drum major specifically. I guarantee she worked harder than him to fulfill her band responsibilities and complete school work.

They also talked about how kids that came from a certain junior high are just plain stupid as if that were a well-known fact. I attended that junior high. I wanted to say something so bad, but they are about to graduate anyway.

I always wondered why my friend group never really overlapped much w/ top 20 kids. I definitely know why now. Most are jerks.

Now that it’s past May 1st, it’s our turn now. That’s kind of scary!!!

@Bobbybob444555 Yeah, WA state has a program called running where juniors and seniors can take classes at the CCs and some public universities for free. They just relocate the money they were going to spend on you going to high school and use it for the tutition. The high schools have lists of classes at the college’s that will count for their graduation requirements. If you go to a CC a lot of kids try and get an AA in those two years.

@snowfairy137 It would be nice if they had that here in fl. There’s programs that do four hs classes and 3 college classes but they sound like too much work. I’d be forced to take classes I don’t want like ap lit and ap lang. I would prefer just doing many CC classes in the the summers before senior year and doing full time DE in senior year. That would give me about 60 credits with ap credits.

Apparently I might be going into IB Math SL 12 instead of Pre-Calculus 12/Calculus 12!

Aand SATs are next week. I just looked at the 2006 APUSH MC (before the new format and similar(?) to SAT USH) and, to me, they look really easy. Simple recall. I hope I find it that way with the SAT too :((

@acomfysofa Wait. Next week? Dang I am SO not prepared for my subject tests. RIP me! :((

@lindsgal It’s crazy! We started talking about applying to college and college essays this week in my english class. It doesn’t seem real. Time is passing way too fast.

One kid from my school just won a four year full tuition scholarship to WVU because of his costume design for our plays and musicals!!! They award them on the local musical award show, and I couldn’t believe it when I heard his name!!! His work goes super unnoticed so it’s amazing to see that he got this for all the time he’s spent working behind the scenes.

Massive BLM rally at my school today, and almost half the school walked out. They met up with kids from neighboring high schools and had a huge rally in a nearby park. This was due to a teacher being fired for wearing a BLM tshirt. The rally ended with discussions on race, and how to better serve minorities in my school (2nd most diverse school in my state). I wasn’t able to go, but the fact that people in my school can show dedication to a cause is really heartening. l’ll be sure to take their feedback into consideration when I attend school board meetings and give faculty presentations. I hope the school district tries to implement our suggestions.

@acomfysofa noo not next week!!I actually took a Barrons math 2 practice test and got a 780 (790 if I hadn’t bubbled the wrong thing, 800 if I went over the time, didn’t get to 3 questions). Those are supposed to be harder than the reat thing tho so that’s good. Physics on the other hand… I have like 8 more chapters to go over in my review book but it’s all stuff we literally never did in my physics class. Great.

Ok some I got some good news. I can attend the NASA summer academy after all. I would just be a few hours late and I would have to miss one day of SAMS, but it’s worth it to attend both.

Also, V-NASA Club Update: An estimated 20 students are going to show up to the club meeting next week! I’m so excited for that to finally kick-off and spread the word about my NASA experience.

I want to the NOVEC Youth Tour meeting yesterday and I can’t wait to go now. I got meet my roommates and we went over everything we’re going to do.

So yeah, yesterday was overall a good day!

@ak2018 That’s good! I’m happy for you!

I’m home sick today, but I’m hearing from my sis (she’s in my chem class) that there was an explosion in our chemistry classroom during another class today. Our teacher tried doing an “elephant’s toothpaste” demonstration but it turned into something like a bomb. The thing exploded, glass went everywhere, the classroom is foggy, no one can go in, and the department head is pissed. On top of that the teacher is now shook, and us students are worried about whether she will be fired or not since she’s a first-year teacher (she used to work at a university in a lab but now she’s a teacher).

I’m officially a senior citizen! Finished all of my classes today with A’s!!! <:-P <:-P <:-P

School got out for me today too! I’m so excited to chill a little bit this summer. I think i’ll start a youtube channel and get my future college vlogging career started early lmao

@ak2018 Thanks! That sounds really bad what with the Chemistry lab, hope everyone is okay.

@neptuna Congrats!

@oPhilippos I’m hoping to start my Youtube channel up again and vlog about my programs throughout the summer.

Today was really chill. We read A Raisin In The Sun in AP Lang, pretty good play by the way. We also watched Selma in U.S. History which made me tear up a bit.

This Friday was the Seniors last day for finals so they’re completely gone. My school has a tradition of crowning the juniors/incoming seniors on the current class of seniors last day and I got my crown!!!

Hey guys I have a question. So I’ve mentioned vaguely before that my depression became more severe and affected my grades so it caused me to have 3 B+ and 2 B’s(3 A’s too) for the first semester of junior year. I started therapy and although grades are not finalized I’m looking to have all A’s and one B+(89). Previous years as a sophomore and freshman I had all A’s the entire year. So my gpa by the time my dual enrollment grades over this summer are calculated into my gpa, my overall gpa should be a 3.81. Will the admission officer(s) see my first two years of high school as a fluke? Should I mention my illness to reassure that I’m not a fluke? Out of the 10 colleges I’m applying to the most selective are Vandy, UM and Washington University in St. Louis. Will this hurt my chances?

@Iridescentgaze I would mention it in your essays. I would shape it as something like an obstacle or a hiccup on your path through high school but that you have overcome that obstacle and that it has shaped who you are (or something like that). It is a touchy subject, though, so I wouldn’t dwell on it too much. I’m in a similar situation as you with mental illness. I’m planning on mentioning my depression and anxiety in the additional information section of the Common App (?).
I don’t think it would hurt your chances. Your GPA is still very good and I’m sure you’ll be a competitive applicant next year. :slight_smile:

Okay guys, it’s storytime :))

So with the huge success my new V-NASA Club is likely going to be, I decided to think about my other planned senior year extracurricular: VEX Robotics mentoring. As some of you know, I did FRC this year. After spending two months with my FRC team, I just didn’t feel that much a part of the team at all. It just felt like those with more experience pretty much talked to those with more experience and those with lesser experience did the lesser, smaller jobs and didn’t really learn anything. I know this how in some cases how teams work, where you have to work your way up to the top, but it just felt like those with more experience couldn’t be bothered to at least get others involved because they might “break something” or “they’ll just get in the way”. I had a similar experience in middle school throughout VEX, but I at least felt like part of a team. So I stuck with my decision to mentor VEX Robotics at my old middle school next year. While I hate that place with a fiery passion, especially now since I walk there close to there everyday after school from my bus stop and those kids tend to holler at me from their buses trying to get my attention, the Robotics Club made going there worth it. I visited the school a few times this year and it was just so nostalgic. Remembering how I was in the 6th grade, the Robotics team sparked my interest in STEM and made my school year awesome. Our team was so diverse too. We had team members of all races and I think it was largely because in our community, not too many of these opportunities existed and some of us thought making robots was a “grown-up” thing. The point is, over the past year, I remembered what Robotics meant to me and I want that feeling back. So I’m going to where it all began, this time, as a senior mentor with half a decade of VEX-perience. :))

I have a lot of ideas for the club once it starts back up next fall. First, I want to make it feel like a team. I want the kids to get to know each other and actually be a team. Second, I want them all the different grades to interact, mixing up old and new experienced students. Third, I want to stress the importance of learning how to program and writing in the engineering notebook frequently. When I was in VEX in the 6th grade, no one wanted to learn to program because of the conditional statements and Boolean Algebra that was involved. It was really math-y. This year, through my engineering class, I learned that programming isn’t that hard with a pretty basic understanding of math, at least the kind of programming VEX requires. Also, the engineering notebook is a MUST to write in. Awards can be won if the notebook is written well. But yeah, those are my ideas for now. My 8th grade science teacher, the head of the Robotics club, said I could help in pretty much any way I want next year. This could actually have a good impact on those kids since my old middle school was a minority school. I mean, I guess it can’t be all that bad if my middle school has alumni that went to UAlabama and Carnegie Mellon. I just hope I can spark their interests in STEM, like my middle school helped me do.

Also, talk about everything going full circle as well as irony. You guys know how I got into the SAMS program at Carnegie Mellon, right? Well, a few days ago, I finally put all the pieces together and it turns out that the Carnegie Mellon Robotics Academy and Institute essentially created VEX Robotics and the programming language, ROBOTC. I wrote about VEX Robotics in my essays not knowing any of this! Now this summer, I’ll have a chance to meet with the people who essentially formed my future and potentially get to work with them in the future through an internship. Talk about irony!
