@leapord1993 OMG HOW
So we just had a little assembly about the AP+PLTW recognition program that was pretty much a waste of time. You sign up for the recognition and it doesn’t seem worth it at all to even put it on college applications. It’s pretty much a participation award.
@oPhilippos Oh, I get it. Still sounds like a good idea to me.
Edit: I posted a lot more but it didn’t get through for some reason, but my study hall is almost over so I’ll add it later… Why is mobile finicky smh
Does anybody know any good conferences or seminars that I would be able to bring my student council to next school year? looking in the PA/ NY region.
Also for any females interested in the STEM area, Syracuse University is holding this overnight camp October 22-23 called “It Girl”. It seems very interesting! If anyone wants the link pm me !
So I just received my summer assignment for AP Physics C from the AP Physics C teacher and the first thing I said afterwards was “Yikes!” :)) I also got to see the class roster for next year and it’s filled with so many people who are in the top 20% of the class. While that doesn’t really intimate me, at least I hope it doesn’t, I’m not too happy about being in a class with a lot of those kids, some I dislike, others dislike. I actually kind of agree with @Hamlon 's statement about the top-ranked kids. They have formed their own clique at my school. Nevertheless, I plan on trying my best to at least pull a B in Physics C. With the SAMS Physics and Calculus class, I’ll basically have a large advantage over a lot of the students. There are some pretty nice kids in there, like three I’m friends with, which should really help and we’re already planning on doing a group chat. In AP Chem, I felt pretty much alone, but I’d feel much better if we were “all in this together” (What team? Wildcats!!! :)) )
Over the past week I have been getting my AP summer work from my teachers. I got my AP Calc AB practice questions that I won’t start on until about two weeks (it won’t take long it’s only 150 or so math problems) before school is started (which my teacher advised), so I’ll have the information pretty fresh in my head for our first week because we have quizzes. For AP US Government I just received it over the weekend and we have to do current event journals and connect it with a set of topics my teacher wrote down and then we have to take notes on the Federalist Papers. I have AP Gov with my same teacher as APUSH and the summer work it like half this year than it was for APUSH, which I am relieved. I haven’t received my official AP Lit assignment but I know we have two books (each pretty lengthy) and do different assignments on them. Lastly, for AP Human Geo I won’t have summer work since it’s online, which I am kind of happy about. The only thing that going to take a long time is really AP Lit because of the two long books but my goal is to finish the first one before July 4th weekend and work on the second one starting about half way through July so the historical fiction one is more stuck in my head for when we have the test. AP Gov will require me to do a current event each week but it’s not that much to do and it will force me to spread it out over the entire summer, but I’ll probably save the Federalist Papers summaries for the week or two before school because it won’t take me too long.
I also start shadowing my doctor this week which I am so excited about. Although I am a little nervous since I really don’t know what is expected of me, but he has been my family doctor for years so I know I will feel really welcomed.
@madison2000 how long are you shadowing for? I’m planning on shadowing doctors too, but I’m not really sure how much is an appropriate amount of time to learn about their job.
Also, I started research in a psych lab today! I’ve been really excited about the opportunity, and it’s even better that summer is slow for doing trials. That means that I’ll have a lot of time to myself and to do work while at the lab lol. This is great because I have a lot of summer assignments but my official class schedule comes out in the middle of June, and all the amendments that need to be made will start July. It’s all starting to work out!
Sidenote: I’ve also been looking for a part-time job that I can do this season for money since being an RA doesn’t pay. If anyone has ideas/lives in the vegas area and can hire me/can hire me for a job I can do online, I’d love suggestions. I’ve applied to a bunch of retail/food places already, but I haven’t gotten any calls back
As this month, and this school year, comes to a close, let us remind ourselves of what we’ve been through. If you have end-of-year grades that you aren’t proud of, be proud! You just survived part 1 of 2 of the harder years of high school. Remember that:
- Your grades do not define who you are, so do not add more feeling to it than needed
- It's okay to have the occasional B or two and still be Ivy-league material
- Despite the times we live in, try your best to care more about what you've learned rather than what you've earned (especially with subjects relating to your major) and don't let it discourage you
- These are the years that are meant to prepare you for college, so it's definitely good to learn to struggle now
- If you can't end this year out strong, just end standing up
- This is something my science teacher said: Talk to people about what you're interested in because you never know if they could point you to someone who share the same interests. Explore hidden connections!
My school year is 7 days away from ending and I want to end it feeling good and on a good note!
@oPhilippos he only allows for once a week for 4 hours for a month so essentially 16 hours. Although it seems very little I find it quite generous since I am not even a undergraduate student. At the end I hope to get a letter of recommendation, which would mean a lot, and in return for letting me shadow him I am sending his office an edible arrangement as a thank you.
We’re starting to have end-of-the-year parties in my classes (I have one in french tomorrow and another in math Monday) since the seniors are leaving soon. They have their in-class finals next week and then they’re done. Time is going by way too fast. I’m going to miss them a lot.
My AP Lang class had a Q & A session with some seniors who took the class last year this morning. It was very insightful! Two major things that I took away from it are that, to get to know a school beyond the tour, take advantage of student shadowing or overnight opportunities and, for the “why ___?” prompts, to align what you write with what the theme/vibe/what the school cares about as well as things that show that you’ve looked into the school.

So the club thing, I decided to support them anyway. The president said he was too tired to call a meeting, so I called it, and I took point, and he said: listen, do you want to be company president? It’s too stressful. So, yeah. Whatever the moral is. I’m excited though this is my first venture into the world of entrepreneurship.
My school’s heavy on the academics. We’re even divided into three classes: first class, second and third depending on your academic ranking. The popular kids are in first class and there’s a stigma I don’t understand attached to kids in third class. Many of them are my close friends. Anyway, I didn’t really see the difference between the classes until some students from second moved up to first. And my, are they lost.
That was a lengthy, rambling paragraph to show the kind of people I’ll be working with. This will be the most challenging thing I have ever done. Ready, set, go!
As many of you are celebrating your last days I am dreading it every teacher is giving assignments, essays, and Regents review. I just want to be done :’(
SATs are in two days!
Also, I’m switching IB Physics HL to IB Biology HL. Learning US history for the SAT II and getting an 83% on a Physics test made me realize I’m much better at memorization >:D<
I like Physics and Biology equally, but I was leaning towards Physics because it was a dramatically new way of thinking for me and I thought I could get a good mark in it if I try a lot. But I studied a lot but test scores only end in the low-90s, and this one is a low 80
In comparison, I have a 100% in Biology right now.
I don’t care about lower marks, except when they’re to the point that it can affect my chances at going to a college I want to go to. I think I’ll just self-study Physics as a hobby because I feel like I need a bunch of time (much more time than a class) to grasp the concepts.
SCHOOL’S OUT FOR SUMMER!!!
:-S <:-P
Hey guys,
Today was the worst social experiment in my school. I only say that because they released the ACT scores from the test we all took in school during April. I was really disappointed because I got a 30, and I got the same score back in October, sonit looks like I’m sending my 1480 to schools
Hey Guys,
So I did my club presentation and a total of 19 students showed up to learn about the NASA programs, including the projected class valedictorian. While I did stutter at times, I mainly got the point across.
Today was kind of bittersweet because a lot of my senior friends are leaving. I felt like crying a little too. The year ends for me next Friday and I hate how emotional I’m becoming. :(( :))
I finished my last final today! Now I’m counting down the days until my East Coast college trip and engineering program at Cornell.
Anyone have any last minute tips for the SAT tomorrow? Here is one I’ll be doing:
Sleep 8 hours
Yesterday, at my academic recognition night I received a 40,000 dollar scholarship to the University of Rochester. It’s just a start, but it made me happy and positive for the future.
