High School Class of 2018

I emailed a professor at Carnegie Mellon and they said I could tour their lab when I come over later in the Summer. The professor said it would be a little harder to make my visits a regular thing, but they didn’t say no sooo…fangirl screams

@Hamlon Oh same for me! If I’m not too busy, I want to make it a habit to visit Carnegie Mellon’s Robotics Institute. It’s kind of funny and ironic considering that I’m going to the same place that created VEX Robotics, which sparked my STEM interest. I want to hopefully see what they do and maybe make some connections!

Most of my semester grades are currently low A’s… I’m either going to have my best A/B ratio ever, or my worst. I’m so jealous of those of you who are on summer break ;-;

SAT scores just came out and it was so “meh” for me. I was checking my Chem and Lit subject test which i got a 730 and 710 on. Like I’m happy they were decent scores but I also got up at 5:30 to check them and it wasn’t rlly worth it

Breaking College Board News: As of next year, SAT scores will be available 12 days after you take the test!!!

Question: Is this a game changer?

@ak2018 I think it’s just another thing to compete with the ACT. Since there is no required essay, there’s no reason to wait a month for scores anymore. Plus the slip-up with the scores that were released early and then hidden again. Now people know that they have scores early yet wait until after the sign-up date for the next test to release them, which has made some people question if the College Board is truly a non-profit. I’m happy they’re moving in this direction. People deserve to know their scores as soon as all the tests are processed instead of waiting weeks after the SAT scored them all. If only it were 12 days for the January and May tests lol.

I know this isn’t amazing but I got my score back of 1480 on my May SAT and I am so satisfied. I did it! Excluding Caltech, UChicago, Yale and a handful of other very selective schools, I’m within/above the middle 50 percentile of scores for most schools. It feels so good!

Ok guys, tomorrow’s my last day!!! It’s also the last day to figure out my schedule for next year. As of right now, I’m signed up to take Econ and Finance online starting June 26th. I’m also kind of stressed rn because I have an 89% in POE for the year that in order to get a 90% I either have to take one more quiz, hopefully, or finish my marble sorter in one hour. The former is much more doable. If it comes down to it, I’ll start asking for help with the marble sorter. Tomorrow, all I need to do is turn in one last worksheet for Spanish, hopefully get that 90% in POE, and finish up my AP Chem power point. Once this is all over, I’m going to a grad party on Saturday to kickoff my summer!

Also, get ready, because starting next week, I’m vlogging!!!

@ak2018 I was really looking for this. I am new to USA, and I am so free this Summer. I really need a good summer online course. Which platform are you using?

I’ve been trying to bump my 1550 up a bit by improving on R/W––I know that I can get perfect, but I often make clumsy mistakes. I got my score today and it’s the SAME R/W SCORE as before. At this point, I might just leave my score as it is.

Congrats on everyone’s SAT scores, I took the one last Saturday but not the May one. I don’t expect a very high score since I am a ACT kind of person and oddly enough I have 20 mins after the reading section and the math calc active section to chill, I don’t think that’s a good sign lol.

I am also a schedule oriented person who needs to have a strict schedule for everything. I created a schedule for my summer work, especially AP Lit. I found out that in order to finish my AP Lit books in time for school to start I have to read two chapters a week day from the first weekday in July to the day before school starts. I guess it’s not horrible but with my other AP homework and working daily I am going to be slammed.

Starting in July I am also going to start practicing for the ACT in Sept. my hope is that with studying for 30 mins every weekday (2.5 hours a week) and a practice test every other week, I can boost my score from a 29 to a 32, since the Sept. ACT is the last one I am taking.

I got my sat subject text scores and was pretty happy! 700 on math 1 and literature, and 710 on spanish. My question is if these scores are high enough for it to be worth it to submit them to school who don’t require it? Like are they impressive enough to add to my application?

Hello all… I’m class of 2018 and new, so I’m just going to pop in and ask what anyone thinks of this schedule. I have to finalize it soon and I’m not sure how it’s all going to fit together sos
AP Spanish V
AP Biology
AP Literature
AP Calc BC
AP Physics 1
US Government
Leadership Sem.

@saxynerd I think so, 700+ is all you need for any university I believe.

Looking through Erica Meltzer’s SAT reading and other people call it boring, but I think it’s actually really interesting! I never knew you could take shortcuts in reading and understand it better by reading the first/last sentences of a paragraph and reading a few sentences before and after a quote to understand it (vs. just reading after the quote).

And apparently my normal English exam will be sort of like this (but easier), so I’m studying for two things at the same time!

Just saw my may SAT subject test scores! I got a 800 for Chemistry! I was so nervous; I had the excellent idea of memorizing flame test colors and organic chem structures the day of and reading through the review book with only one week of preparation. Not the best plan, but I guess AP studying was enough. Highly recommend Barron’s for Chemistry Subject test prep

@asapventure My initial reaction to your schedule was that it was very AP heavy, but then I realized that I’m going to be taking the same number of AP classes soooo…Just make sure you can handle the course rigor, college apps/essays/senior activities/extra curricular activities. Most important this is to keep that GPA up! Also make sure that those AP’s are classes that you are actually interested in, not just for a GPA boost.

I decided to take Spanish 3 online in addition to my college classes next year. Most of my colleges only ask for 2 years of a language because I’m interested in very techy schools, so really its a personal decision, I really want to learn more Spanish lol and I hope to continue either it, Russian, or both in college.

Is anyone applying for William’s WOW program or any other Fly-in for that matter?

I got 730 on the U.S. History subject test! I didn’t study for Math 2 because I was swamped with AP tests. I got a 670. I’m thinking about applying to schools as a Math major so I definitely need to focus on that test over the summer to get above a 750+, at the lowest a 700. My goal for Literature was 700 and I got a 650. That’s slightly above average but I might as well take it again when I take Math 2. I think it will only be $20 more.

I registered for the June ACT months ago when I still thought I was an ACT person. Studying for the multiple subjects is not going well for me. I think I’m going to stick with the SAT and prepare for that in August. It’s easier for me to understand. I’m excited that score reports will be sent out sooner. My score for My Reading/Writing score is already 700+ so I need to work on raising my math score. When you get an A+ in AP Calc AB but can’t score well on SAT / ACT / PSAT math…oh well, that’s what I get for not studying as much as I should.

@kassh4 I was going to apply to WOW until I saw where Williams is on a map. The school is too isolated for me.

@Ktgisgreat I believe I’m using GradPoint, which is different from what my school’s been using, which are Virtual Virginia and Virtual High School. If you want to take a summer course and get credit for it, you’ll have to talk to your school, or nearest school, and see which platforms they use. That option will likely require you to pay some money, a few hundred dollars likely. If you don’t want credit, or just want something to learn over the summer, then edX and other MMOC’s are prefect. Use these courses to learn something new without getting credit. Do you have an idea of what you want to learn/take?

@kassh4 I might apply. Williams has been constantly sending me emails and mail, so I guess I might as well visit.
