High School Class of 2018

@asapventure Welcome! Honestly, your schedule looks incredibly stressful to me. Is there a reason you decided to double up on AP sciences? Since first semester senior year will be full of college app related stuff, you might want to consider dropping/switching a course to make your load a a little easier to manage. That’s just what I think, though, if you believe you will be fine, go for what you have now.

I just finished two of my finals. I think I did fine. I finished English and Trig so then Monday I just have Spanish and World History. I have the ACT tomorrow. Since I get to leave in a half hour (i love my school’s finals schedule) I’m gonna look over some stuff but I’m not gonna stress myself out.

Today was my LAST DAY OF JUNIOR Year!! This year was truly rough and the fact this next year, as the rest of my life, will continue to get tougher scares me a bit, but at least I jumped through this hurdle. I would just like to say that this year, I’m done having high grade expecations, which caused me to stress a lot this year. I’m literally going to be a straight B student next year!!! :)) And now that I know I pretty much have a NASA career in the bag, there’s really no motivation to do hold myself to high expectations for anyone but me, including colleges. Today was honestly so bittersweet and just straight up sad. I said goodbye to all my teachers and finished my assignments, at least most of them. We also had a little 5-minute pep rally for our softball team since they’re in the state championship! Other than that, junior year is pretty much behind me. Now time to focus on the fantastic summer I have planned.

Yeah, I just applied. How selective do you think they are?? @kassh4

@mikayla1 The Williams Program is really popular compared to other fly-ins, but I think I saw that they take around 150/1000 kids.

@mikayla1 Did you have to fill out the whole thing at once or can you save it and work on it later.

You can’t save it, but you can come back to it later. It won’t close out on you if you are constantly connected to wifi, but I wouldn’t risk it if you’re not. It doesn’t take long at all except for the additional comments. @kassh4

the georgetown application just got released a few days ago and honestly the website and system they use looks like it’s from 2004 it’s so frustrating how many pages i had to go through just to find the essay questions (hint: they didn’t change from last year)

anybody have an opinion on going to school in your hometown? i visisted carnegie mellon today and i’m just not sure if i wanna stay in pittsburgh, even tho its a rly good school

It was also my last day of junior year and it was so bittersweet. Some of my friends and favorite teachers are leaving, so that was the sad aspect. However, junior year was so tough but at the same time enriching that I’m kind of glad it is now over, and at the same time Im not. I can’t wait for my senior year though, as it will be awesome :)>-

@ak2018 I would caution you against slacking off. Just because they say they’ll give you an internship next year, doesn’t mean they will if they don’t like your grades after you apply and just because you got an internship doesn’t mean you get another job with them if you don’t do well in your classes (especially stem ones).

@snowfairy137 Actually, I’m not planning on slacking off, but rather focusing more on the future after high school. My Matriculate advisor actually said it’s common for seniors to experience these ā€œlooking beyond high schoolā€ moments where they start to care more about getting into colleges than GPA because at that point, you only really have one semester left to show anything before they make their decisions. Junior year, at least in my opinion, is more important because it’s the last full year they’ll see. But yeah, I’m not planning on slacking off, but rather reevaluating my really high expectations to be more realistic with myself. I’m pretty sure my grades were lower this year because I did A LOT more stuff outside of school compared to sophomore year. Between taking an online college class, applying for summer programs, staying after school and on weekends for numerous clubs, doing outdoor track, and even starting my own club, I was very busy this year. Because I’m taking even more AP classes next year, I’ve decided to cut down on the extracurriculars (two at max) so I can study more. I’m just taking what I’ve learned from this year and applying to next year. I’m going to continue to go for good grades, but next year I’m not planning on being the kid who gets disappointed over getting an 89%.

Also with the NASA thing, they said as long as I have a good resume, plan on graduating college, preferably as a mechanical or electrical engineer, and keep in contact with them, I’m fine. I speak with the NASA outreach programs coordinator a lot and she said they wouldn’t really look at my high school grades at all, just looking at my resume and any recommendations. Apparently, the fact that I have participated in a NASA program gives me an automatic advantage if I want to apply to work there. Since my internship is planned on being one where I go there during the summers throughout college, I’d be gaining experience as well as connections, enough to potentially secure me a job. But yeah, I can understand your reasoning to not slack off. I’ve got a wonderful opportunity here and I should br trying my best not to take it for granted. Overall, I’m just happy that I got through this year knowing that what I’ve done, despite my grades, put me in a good position such as this. My plan in college is simply to try my best, pass my classes, and graduate.

@ak2018 they’ll look at your high school grades for an internship next summer though.

@veagle18 honestly, I think it depends. I personally haven’t been too keen on staying in my hometown for that same reason. I would love to stay in my hometown if the university’s undergrad offerings were better, but I really just can’t. I think it would be useful to talk to professors and stuff, because if my local university was better, I would totally stay. The professors at the university are so amazing and wonderful people that I’d love to continue studying with, but the undergrad offerings are so limited. I’ve been spending a lot of time there in a lab, and it feels far enough away for me. I think I would totally consider it, especially if it’s a place as good as carnegie

If I stayed in my hometown my parents would make me commute and I don’t want to do that. I’d have my own house cause my family owns two and will be fine remodeling the other one but it sounds lonely and not fun.

Hey guys!

I’m totally jealous that you guys are on break. And yeah, I’m catching senioritis. I skipped class to hang out in the computer lab with a bunch of others so we could go through universities and discuss our application plans. Some of them are being so secretive though, like they don’t want us to apply to the schools they’re applying to.

I’m actually going to be able to apply to more than 10 schools, because many of them will accept test scores on my official transcript!
Including…Stanford! *fans self
Some of them do request proof of financial constraint but no worries there.

I have never actually finished an edX course. I’m probably too lazy  So kudos to those of you brave enough to finish them.

Apparently olympiads aren’t worth going for anymore, literally, cause no funding for teams anymore (so much for that Olympiad medal I was dreaming of).

*Runs away.

Sup guys, so I had to go into the school literally the first day of summer break because my sister had to meet with out counselor. When I was with them, my counselor told me that AP Chemistry is the same period as AP Physics 2, so I replaced Chem with AP Comp Sci A. Can someone tell me what the class is like? I was thinking maybe take AP Comp Sci Principles instead? I’m. It exactly sure. I have all summer to change it.

@gigichuck Same! I missed a lot of my classes the last two weeks of school because I knew we weren’t going to do anything productive. I was going to sign up for UC Berkeley’s AP Lit course on edx but it’s full. Rip.

I cut my list down from 10 to 8 schools. My family and I decided that I didn’t need a second safety (UC Santa Cruz) because I prefer Arizona State, and since I’d be in their honors college. I’m visiting Harvard, Northeastern, and Yale this summer! Possibly Boston College and MIT as well. I’m counting down the days until my programs at Cornell and Santa Clara! Our research project at Cornell is about Environmental Engineering so my limited APES knowledge will actually be useful. I think I might be interested in a multidisciplinary field like Environmental Science/Engineering, but I didn’t pay attention in APES this year so I’m not sure. It was easy to not do homework or pay attention and get an A.

Did anyone take the ACT today? How was it?
I spent too long on certain Math problems and threw off my pacing. Science was pretty strong, except for those first few. My first Science score was a 24 and I’m expecting a 30+ on this one. Hopefully that will bump up my composite a lot, even if my math scores remain the same! Reading was okay but I was unsure about more questions than usual. I usually get 2-4 questions wrong but this time it felt like 5-7. English is always a mystery to me. I should probably learn proper grammar before I take AP Lit next year.

Do scores really come back in 10-12 days? The SAT makes me doubtful.

@dietcig ACT is really good about handing back scores really quickly.

Just finished reading Meltzer’s SAT Reading. Now will begin doing KhanAcademy reading questions and start reading Meltzer’s SAT Grammar
