High School Class of 2018

I think over the course of the next year I need to keep reminding myself that I am going to go where God wants me, even if that means that I will be attending a school that I don’t absolutely love. I often find that graduates that I’ve talked to have gotten in this rut during senior year, around decision time, where they feel so depressed because they didn’t get into their top choice(s). I think by reminding myself that I will end up where I need to will really help me deal with rejection.

I’ve also heard to take senior year really slowly because it does pass by in an instant. I know I am ready to move on to a different chapter in my life but I really want to make sure I am appreciating every moment of this next year. In order to do so my mom and I went to the book store and I got a really nice leather journal so I can journal everything that happens over the course of this upcoming year. It will amazing to go back in 5 years or when my children are seniors and see what it was like for me and remember all of the amazing memories that I may forget about.

@madison2000
That is exactly why many people advise that you choose match/safety schools that you like. I would be more than happy to go to any of the colleges on my list because I did thorough research for all of them. Including my in-state safety. I realized that the only reason I didn’t want to stay in state is because I didn’t want to go to a college where I might know someone and that I wanted to go to a very well-known college.

@010323026877 First, I love George Ezra! Have you heard of Cosmo Pyke (he’s our age and I can’t get over that!)? Second, I’m in the same boat with UT. My only goal for myself is to get into an honors program and my first choice major, but honestly it wouldn’t be heart-breaking for me if I didn’t get either. Austin’s a chill city and I’ve always wanted to go to SXSW. Weekend trips to the beach too. I’m for it! It’s pretty awesome to have such an amazing school as a safety(net).

I live in Maine so I’ll only be able to see the eclipse at ~60%. It’s still exciting. At least there’s going to be an eclipse like this one that will go through Maine in 2024.

@ak2018 I think Trump is mainly just hype.
It sounds like your week has been exciting! I’m glad it’s been going well.

I got my drivers license today! First try! Now onto Girls State – I’m running for the equivalent of speaker of the house – and SSP. Very exciting week coming up!

@ak2018 I loved seeing all the artwork in the Capitol’s tunnels. Were you able to visit the National Museum of the American Indian? The exhibit on the treaties between tribes and the US Government is extremely moving.

What books are you guys reading this summer for AP Lit? I have to read Antigone, Animal Dreams, A Room With A View, and a mythology book. I’m so nervous about this class. I’m not sure about college but I’m definitely ready to be done with high school. I hope senior year goes by quickly and that next summer takes forever.

Since we’re on the topic of music recommendations, Chloe x Halle are also around our age. They recently released their mixtape on Spotify and it’s so good! They’re signed to Beyonce’s record label for a reason.

@dietcig I love Chole x Halle. I fell in love with them when they did a small performance I believe at the BET Awards last year. They also did a really good cover of Humble by Kendrick Lamar recently. They are just adorable sisters.

@Hamlon I hadn’t heard of him, but I just looked him up and wow! I really liked After School Club and All On Me. His sound has me thinking that you might like Dev Hynes’ music, you should check him out! And for UT, I totally feel you, because I’m gonna apply to the Business Honors which I’m not expecting to get into, but just living in Austin would be fine even if I don’t get it because I’d love to go to Austin City Limits

@bethynie Me! I found out about it when I wanted to apply to their writing summer program. I didn’t end up applying but they caught my attention.

*Runs in breathing hard

@Wolfgangbread My college list looks a lot like yours!
After a lot of soul searching and skipping classes(addictive, but fun. Don’t try this if you don’t have a legit excuse if you get caught), I decided to go crazy with my college applications, which is why my list looks something like this:
Stanford
Dartmouth
Uchicago
Upenn
Dartmouth
Princeton
Columbia
Tufts (probably the only school I may have a shot at…getting waitlisted) :-?
Kenyon
Bryn Mawr
Minerva (looking at that 1% acceptance rate with Captain America’s shield like “keep away!”)
And to top the cake: Harvard

You only live once!

Er…note that I’m also applying to Howard, where I will hopefully get into. And, yes, I love my safety - in my home country.

*flies out.

Im really late into the discussion so Im just going to insert stuff that may not be relevent to what’s above me. I’m only applying to in state schools because I dont have the kind of money to pay out of state tuition. Also, my top school has a lot of former alumni from my school and honestly, I don’t care about that so that’s a plus. I’m trying to pick a major that leads to a career choice that’s bound to make the big bucks. I know people always preach following your heart but as shallow as this sounds, I prefer financial security over general happiness

@010323026877 Blood Orange!!! I freaking love him. I was like who’s Dev Hynes? Didn’t know they were the same person! :stuck_out_tongue:
@dietcig Look up Ibeyi. I’m also gonna shamelessly plug in Sevdaliza, Jorja Smith, and Noname as additional artists to check out.

Just a lurker mom saying hello and congratulations for all of your hard work so far. My son is 2018 as well. He’s interested in Furman (first choice) and Franciscan University at Steubenville. He’s taken the SATs and will start his college app essay this week.

@stechin Depending on your stats you could qualify for in-state tuition at some other state schools. I know with my surrounding four states, I qualify for in-state tuition for three of them, it really just depends on your stats. I understand that being financial secure is important but if you hate what you do everyday for the rest of your life, then you are not living. Maybe try finding an interest that you have and figure out where it can be applied to different jobs, like where an artist can work in visual advertisement because there are very little opportunities for free-lance artists (that was just an example but many passions can be directed towards a financial secure job that you would love).

For me, I love working with children but knowing the debt that teachers go in and their financial status after getting a job is poor (which is horrible and I believe that teachers should be paid so much more than they are), but I also love helping people and I have an interest in biology. Therefore I want to be a pediatrician because I will have a passion for what I do, but I will also be financially secure. It really is a balancing act.

@madison2000 Although I love money, I do believe in being somewhat or semi-content with life. From what I’ve observed, the STEM careers are the real money makers in society nowadays. I always liked math so Im considering a business major (actuary science perhaps)

You’re also right about free lance artists not really hitting in big. A lot of my classmates have these goals that I hate to say are unrealistic because these careers are simply not in demand. However, I dont think I have the right to crush someone else’s dreams because it’s ultimately their choice on what they want to do.

Anybody else get annoyed about people saying that the reason they didn’t do well on a test is because they aren’t good test takers when they never studied.

@apraxiamom welcome! Check out this thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/class-20xx-community/1599311-parents-of-the-hs-class-of-2018.html#latest

So I was chosen to be a senior buddy at my school, which means for the for the first two days of school, I’ll be helping the new freshmen get orientated. Can you guys believe that the class of 2021 are going to be freshmen next year?

Wow, 808 notifications… Been awhile!

I’m thinking of applying as undecided to the almost all of the schools I’m applying to, because I’ve been going through the last 3 years of my life trying to figure out my “calling” (a bit overdramatic but whatever lol) and I’ve gone through about 10 different paths already. I’m only applying for a major at Elmira College, because they’re private and I’m not quite sure how much it’s going to cost for me. I’m thinking that I’m probably going to end up in the humanities/liberal arts area once I do land on a major (I’ve never really been a STEM person, although I do like biology and the social sciences).

Snow fairy: thanks for he welcome. I’m in that thread too.
