High School Class of 2018

@xxluvforeverxx Yesss! That bothers the crap out of me, especially when I tried so hard on the test. For example APUSH I hate when I had this one friend who wouldn’t do well on this test (while he very rarely studied) and would say that he was jealous of how well I did (at the beginning of the year I got D’s and C’s on the tests and then built my way up to B’s and A’s because that’s how my teacher worked and I ended up getting an A in the class), but I would explain to him every time that I studied for hours and hours leading up to the test. But I get even more aggravated when my best friend saw my first ACT score, which was a 29 and hers was a 21 I think, and she would get so jealous. She would blame that it was because she does not test well but she didn’t even study leading up to the ACT while I studied for many hours. I think with school this is one of my biggest annoyances, besides people copying my homework that I really tried hard on.

Speaking on that subject, what do you guys feel about other classmates asking to copy your homework? When asked I often say that most of the answers are probably wrong and that they should ask someone else or do it themselves. I just get so irritated when I spend hours and hours on homework to make sure I understand the topic then have people come into school and are able to do their homework from the night before in ten minutes and get the same grade as me. I feel like this is a very big thing right now because it is so easy for someone to send a picture of the homework to other students, at my school we also had this group of students who would either take pictures of the test and give it to the students in the later class or go in a couple of days before while the teacher isn’t in the classroom and take pictures of the test and answers. I just get so mad because if I spend hours studying for a test and they get a better grade than me because they were able to memorize the answer key.

@madison2000 it honestly depends on the homework in my opinion. If it’s something that’s easily a completion grade and didn’t take that much time I don’t really get upset if people ask for my homework. Now I don’t give it to them currently, but I definitely have in during my freshman year. I would only give it to people who hand in their homework all the time, but for one night they had something personal going on, a sports game, concert/recital and etc. that made them not complete their homework.
But each of my A level classes give out homework that requires individualism, so there’s rarely any cheating and copying of homework. And if there is teachers notice and give you significant points off or an F all together. Sometimes teachers don’t notice and then it makes me angry when I put tons of effort into something and someone got a similar grade as me with minimal effort.

@Iridescentgaze I agree. If something took me five minutes to do and everyone has the same answers then I don’t mind, it’s mainly the homework that I worked hard or long on that I get frustrated with because those usually take me the longest. Over the course of the year my teachers have picked up on the whole copying homework and are really strict on it so I am very careful with it, I just don’t really think it’s worth getting a 0; personally I would rather get a 50% because I couldn’t finish it then get a 0% because I copied someone, which might cause them to also get a 0%.

The teachers at my school often assign hw that only gets counted for completeness so I really don’t care about those assignments. A lot of kids at my school struggle the most with math courses so most people actually do the hw because it helps them learn. Copying hw is mostly a huge deal when a teacher assigns busy work. A lot of courses don’t assign work that is individualized so copying is easy. I just don’t understand why teachers assign generic assignments and just check for completion. Last year in my one history class we got graded for completeness on all hw. The question asked who Nixon’s running mate was. One kid wrote Nixon Richard… The teacher noticed but had to let it slide since he was only checking for completion. The catch in that class was that the hw was actually the key to getting a 90+ on his ridiculously hard tests.

Anyway, I’ve been so busy already this summer. I’ve been working constantly. But I still have to make time for my AP Lit assignments. By the end of June, I have to read & annotate a book, fill out a packet on it, and write a question essay. I have three books to read this summer. One each month and one is of our choosing. I thought about doing Lord of the Flies because I know that book extremely well and I will be able to write a good literary analysis on it. Also, I just love that book and kind of want a reason to reread it lol.

I’m taking Lang next year, and my teacher is having us read 10 columns of a journalist of our choosing and analyze them. Last summer for Lit I had to read A Doll’s House and Our Town, which are both plays, and analyze them in a worksheet format and then write an essay on one of them. My Lit class focused on only plays, because our teacher loves plays. My Lang teacher is actually the same teacher who taught Lit so I’m excited for another year with him!

Guys, I’m not sure if I’m misunderstanding, but most super selective schools have very good need based financial aid. Under 60K family income at Princeton, for example means you pay nothing and under 120K means you pay just for room, board and books. And it is sliding up until 300K, so check out the financial aid calculators!

@arinuma You’re understanding well. Similar things are done at Harvard and Yale that I have seen. They have large endowments which means that they can allocate more money into financial aid, which is great for us! I’m considering applying to a few schools that do that because, if I got it, I would have to pay little or nothing to go there.

@frazzledazzle I understand their policies well enough. What I don’t understand is our fear of applying to those schools based on the reason we wouldn’t be able to pay- because if we get in, they go out on a limb trying to make it possible for us all.

@Hamlon OMG SOMEONE WHO ACTUALLY KNOWS WHO IBEYI’S MUSIC!!! The people I’ve met who do recognize them only know them from their appearance in Lemonade. I’m so happy right now! I think they’re my favorite artist so at the moment. I literally tell everyone I know to listen to them. I painted a portrait of Lisa for my art class last semester. Noname is also great! I will definitely listen to those other two artists. Oh and “Night Drive” by Ari Lennox is a jam.
@010323026877 lol I was also very confused and didn’t know that he is Blood Orange.

you guys should pm me (or post) your spotify playlists! I haven’t updated this one in a while but it’s filled with songs that I like to show people https://open.spotify.com/user/thxfrthvenom/playlist/692a9Ac94JuTWxj5iTQmus
lol please ignore my emo username from when I was a 13 year old kid who loved My Chemical Romance.

more music recs: Ari Lennox, Dentia and Sene, Run River North (indie rock), CUCO (slow songs that make me feel like I’m time traveling), Kevin Abstract, Tus Amigos Nuevos (also rock but en español)

@Hamlon @dietcig haha I was debating on whether or not I should call him by his real name or Blood Orange when I first posted that! I had no idea he was Blood Orange either until I found out that he did the score to one of James Franco’s movies. and I would be totally interested in sending y’all my Spotify stuff, I kind of have an eclectic music taste too
@dietcig I looked at your Spotify playlist and got really excited when I saw Time Machine because I saw COIN in Dallas a few weeks ago!

@arinuma There are still fees such as traveling, laundry, and other personal items that might make it difficult for low income families to afford private schools. There recently was a gofundme campaign for a senior accepted to Harvard for these extra fees. On paper, my family has a high income and wouldn’t qualify for much financial aid. But I know that my parents help out their siblings and parents a lot. That’s why I’m not too sure about applying to more than one Ivy.

@010323026877 Time Machine is definitely my favorite. I was going to see them a couple nights ago but I didn’t feel like driving to Beverly Hills.

June ACT scores start coming out in two days!

Is anyone else nervous for AP test scores? This is my first year taking them and I feel like I either aced them all or failed completely lol.

@dietcig Uh oh, I never knew that. Now I’m beginning to feel worried about paying.

@papaya12 I took the AP Lang test and didn’t set my watch for an hour on the multiple choice. I went too slowly and had to guess on two passages. I’m screwed.

@dietcig Your music taste is so great omg. I’ve been progressively falling into indie rock stuff and your playlist had a bunch of great bands that I’d never found before. Just wondering, but how do you find new bands? COIN and Bleachers and Depeche Mode I’ve heard on the radio, but how did you find all the rest?

lol did i just get censored for a text acronym what sorry mods I sometimes forget that acronyms stand for curse words sometimes lol

@oPhilippos if you like indie rock you should try listening to the Shins, Real Estate, Arcade Fire, or the Smashing Pumpkins! there’s also this song by Ghostel called “Buckley Get Your Gun” that I’ve really been liking too. Indie rock is kind of a broad genre though so maybe the kind of songs you like are different from mine

@arinuma when your family makes 250k a year and is giving you 75K for college total top colleges are unaffordable bc they don’t give merit aid and I’d rather not go into debt when any abet accideted school is fine for engineering. (Actually the ivys generally are not great for engineering but that’s another issue)

I never let people copy my homework. Goes against my principles and I don’t like the kind of people who would ask anyway. Also don’t have any AP scores this year bc I did all dual enrollment. Waiting on my sat subject tests tho ahh.

@papaya12 I’m also anxious to find out what my scores are.

@oPhilippos on Spotify you can see Similar Artists on the bottom of every artist page. I listen to those artists to find new songs. small. I also spend too much money going to concerts lol. I make an effort to listen to the opening acts so I’ll enjoy their sets more. Also, the “alternative” radio stations near me have an hour at night to highlight upcoming local bands. Hunny are pretty good local act and still new-ish!

Do AP scores need to be sent to colleges like SAT/ACT scores? Or do you self report them on the Common App?

@dietcig I’m pretty sure you self report, and when you commit to a college you send the official scores through college board in order to get the credit/placement/fulfilled requirement that the scores would get you. Although I’m not 100% sure either…
