High School Class of 2018

@LeopardFire I have to read The Poisonwood Bible (543 pages, one of the thickest books I’ve ever read), a pretty easy packet for AP Physics C (math-based), and a long packet for BC Calc, that’s pretty much it.

So, I just finished a third of my Common App essay!!! After realizing that I’m going into this way too fast, my plan is to try and finish one essay this week, finish another at a later date and have everything edited by the end of next month. I actually really like my personal essay and all I can say is that I still believe that superheroes exist.

I think that after we all get into college, we should make a Google Drive file and share our essays. What do you guys think?

Anyone else just get their June ACT score?
I got the same composite as my state testing one. 2 of my section scores when up but the science killed me and I went down like 4 so September here I come.

@snowfairy137 Yeah it does but spending $22 on a school is still far less than $80 with an application fee. Also considering that all those “free” schools that I’m applying to give good merit, it is definitely worth it to apply. I’m talking places like Oberlin, Loyola Chicago, Case, etc.

I have 19 on my college list, but I am applying for 2 before school even starts back (July 1st). There are also a few colleges that I may take off of my list.

@singingwriting I’m still on registered. Really hope mine comes out in the next batch. I’m sure I’m going to be disappointed by my math score. Good thing I already registered for September! tears

I got a 32 on my ACT! I’m happy with my score, but I’m shooting for the scholarship at Bama so I need at least a 33. Looks like I’m studying this summer!

@Hamlon @carmen00 At least we have each other :P.I did get a 35 on the reading so maybe I can get a perfect score next time.

@Hamlon No, I don’t so thanks for the recommendations! I have a really long playlist of artists that I plan on listening to eventually and I think H.E.R. is on it.

@LeopardFire I have to read four books for AP Lit. Antigone, A Room With a View, Animal Dreams, and a 460 page Mythology book. I’ve heard that Animal Dreams is really good. Luckily, A Room With a View is short.

I got an email about a Women in STEM event at Cal Tech. It sounds interesting but I’m hesitant to learn more about the school because I am not prepared for any SAT subject test in science. I have no idea which one I would even take. Maybe I could self study Physics? I studied velocity and acceleration in Calculus. Does anyone have advice on which tests would be “easiest” to study for?

I think I may do Biology E. A lot of concepts from APES carry over and I’m familiar with the concepts because I took Biology freshman year.

The CC search is so broken so I’m going to ask here. Does anyone know if there are any threads regarding fly in programs?

Dear class 2018, my D18 didn’t do well on her ACT Science and math portion, do you all have any recommendations on what books to read, where she can find bunch of practice tests that are close to the real test? Appreciate your help!

@sonoran Google “April 2017 Form 74F” and use that website to study

@sonoran With math it really depends on what math class she is in. I took the April ACT and there were some concepts on the test that I learned the day before in my precalculus honors course. I personally believe that students that who take Algebra 2/Trig/Math 3 junior year are at a disadvantage. I bet, with some searching, you can find the concepts a student needs to know for the math ACT and there could be a list, then just find practice problems online and review those concepts, possibly through Khan Academy.

For science, I took a practice test the week before the ACT and I received maybe a 23 but through practice over the week I was able to bump it up to a 32. Science is more of a understanding graphs and data sections, no real science knowledge beyond that is required. For me I just did practice question after practice question really drilling it into my head, when I got a question wrong I would try to figure out where I went wrong so I don’t mess up again. With the standardized tests today it’s all about practice, practice, practice.

There is a website called crack act where it has a bunch of practice tests, I would link it but I don’t know if it will get blocked because I saw it previously blocked on another post. I would go to the ACT preparation section of CC and look at other recommendations.

If she is still taking practice tests for the science section and is not doing well, then try the SAT. I know many people who do better on one than the other. Hope this helps.

@sonoran The trick for science is to go straight to the questions. Ignore the intro paragraph and the charts until you need them. There’s also a finger method where you point to each component mentioned in a question. The ACT is starting to include more outside knowledge questions, so I would brush up on basic chem, bio, and physics.

@dietcig I meant like discussion threads on CC.

@papaya12 Im seriously so scared. I took calc bc, us gov, lang, and psych. I dont know if I’m going to be able to look. I might have to ask a friend to check with me tbh

@singingwriting my composite stayed the same too. My math and science (which were low for me last time) went up…but then I screwed up reading so it brought it back down. I’m trying to stay positive because my superscore is better but UGH i wish i could have atleast improved one point. But yep. we better destroy that test in September

Just wondering what you guys think but, I think that single sitting scores really don’t matter as much as superscores for standardized tests. If you think about it, these tests are supposed to show your capability as a student. So, if you get a high score one time for a section, wouldn’t that mean you’ve already proven that you can do it? Plus, single sitting scores just test how you did on a specific day. I think that superscores show your capability overall because you shouldn’t be expected to perform at your best at everything you do at any given moment solely for the fact that you’re human. I don’t know, I just find that pretty reassuring. Standardized tests are basically trying to show that you are capable of doing well. If you got a high score one time, wouldn’t that mean you’ve already established your threshold? Basically, test scores are supposed to say that “this is how good i can be.” Wouldn’t colleges understand if you can’t be your best at every single moment?

@oPhilippos ugh that makes me feel so much better about my composite score repeat. It makes me mad because the first time I took the ACT on english I got a 36 and on my June one I got a 32…I’m really frustrated. I wish all colleges had the superscore mindset.
