High School Class of 2018

@gopgal My reading went up 2 points from my best score, my math went up 1 but my science wen down 4 due to confusion and I screwed up my timing and rushed thinking I had only 5 minutes when I have 10

So I’m going off to NASA Langley on Friday and I’m super excited. My team and I have been working on our presentation on the garbage gyres in the Pacific Ocean for the last two weeks and we present it on Sunday night. That first day is mainly just orientation, but that night we’re going to work on our presentation a little more and then apply for our position. I’ve been told I’m likely going to receive the mission leader role, but I might also might go for the orbit calculations position. The mission leader position seems more my style, so I might just go with that. I’ll update you guys more on how that goes.

@snowfairy137 When do you leave for your academy?

I also leave for SAMS next Saturday and I’m really excited for that! I just got an email today confirming my science class, which is Physics. So many people signed up for Physics that we have two sections. I also found one of my textbooks online so that’s great. I have to take a math placement test on the first day, which I’m kind of nervous about since I NEED to get into Calculus. I’m doing a little studying later this week, so I’ll definitely pass.

@gopgal I took US gov and Psych too, along with comp gov. I’m most nervous about the gov ones, for US the FRQs were really easy for me, but I felt like I didn’t write enough, and for comp I was confused the entire test lol. My AP teacher took the gov ones in high school too, and she got a 5 on comp and 4 on US, even though she missed an entire FRQ on comp. I just hope that I pass.

@ak2018 Sunday! I’m hoping for mission leader too, my interview’s Sunday. Idk if I’ll get it but my resume really highlighted my leadership and I think I can interview well so here’s to hoping!

@ak2018 I am super jealous of all this NASA stuff you get to do. I really want to work on the journey to mars mission so badly but I can’t figure out what I want to do for it.

@snowfairy137 Same. I feel like my resume is going to blow everyone else’s out of the water because of all the leadership and ambition I have. But I’m a little overconfident there. Well, you should definitely tell me, and the thread, how it goes. I might just be there next year for the aerospace summer academy.

@singingwriting Well technically, NASA isn’t really working on a mission to Mars. Due to low government funding that’s been happening since after the end of the Space Race, NASA has been receiving less and less funding from the government since then. So it looks like SpaceX, or another private company, will likely be at the forefront of the Mars expedition. NASA, at the very least, will likely send in parts for the shuttle. They’re very friendly with SpaceX.

But yeah, if you’re definitely interested, keep doing lots of research and likely one going into either the mechanical or aerospace engineering fields or even astronomy.

Lol, that was the 12345th comment.

So I just found out that my SAMS Physics seminar is going to be the equivalent of AP Physics C and will be Calculus-Based. I’ll definitely be more prepared for Physics C next year.

I’m taking Calculus based physics next year and I’m excited because I don’t know what to expect.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fMep4awMYMY what our next year will consist of :-bd

Guys I just got all of my final grades back, and I just averaged them together… I somehow swung a 98 this year! I’m super proud of myself!

I feel like my superstore for the ACT would be great be uses I got a 33 on science the first time and a 30 the second time while doing the flip flop of that for math. And, I did better on English and reading the second for both sections. But my SAT, I did better overall in the second sitting.

There are a bunch of REAL practice tests at the crackact website.
My daughter also used “For the Love of ACT Science” and College Panda’s ACT Math.
Her composite score went up by 4–from 29 to 33 from the April to June test.
I think doing a lot of real tests helped the most.

@dragonmom3 What are the ****

@aspiringgirl I believe CC blocks the name of the website but just search real act tests and the website is the second link.

Those of you who’ve taken SAT Subject tests, what was your best prep textbook?

@gigichuck I used Barron’s for both chemistry and math 2; I scored an 800 and a 750 respectively. If you have the time I would definitely do a read-through of the Barron’s prep book for whatever test you’re taking as well as complete most if not all of the practice questions. They are slightly more difficult than the actual test but I found this to be more reassuring.

How do y’all feel about r/applyingtocollege? They really dislike us for issues that are mirrored in their own community. Like I think the chance me threads are gross too, but I also think encouraging people to shotgun (apply to over 20 schools based purely on prestige) or verbally attacking people who need testing accommodations are their own issues to sort out. It’s really amusing to see them talk about CC as if it’s some monolithic entity. Both sites aren’t perfect and can be toxic if you use them for the wrong reasons.

I just want to know what y’all think. Are there things we can do to make this a more welcoming thread? Just look up CC or College Confidential on R e d d i t if you have no clue what I’m talking about.

Just got some really good news!

Apparently, one of the CMU admissions officers called my NASA program coordinator and invited her to the SAMS symposium in mid-August where I’ll be presenting my research project!!! CMU kind of forgot to tell me, but the NASA program coordinator told me instead. I’m really excited to start SAMS and I feel this is definitely an essay-worthy event.

@Hamlon I kind of liked that place for a bit, seeing it as a good alternative to CC, but quickly found out that it was just as toxic, if not more. The arguments about AA and lying on college applications and “stealing spots” honestly made it so much worse. They’ve gotten so bad that one of the mods literally decided to leave r/applyingtocollege all together because she was sent cyberthreats AT HER WORKPLACE. I mean, this place is bad enough with all the obnoxious kids and helicopter parents, but I don’t believe it’s really gotten that bad, or if it has, it’s quickly taken down like nothing happened. Like it can be a pretty useful tool, but I think I’ll stay here. I’m not planning on going back to that place, along with r/APStudents (with their over-usage of sarcasm), again. Also, after next June, I probably won’t be on here too much either.

@Hamlon I think if we could stop people from bragging about their stats would help, because it will scare off people who want to go to those places and make those who’ve reached the places in question annoyed and accusatory.

They seem to have an issue with parents, but the parents I’ve met on this site were some of the most helpful ones in the competitive college admissions process. (In fact, I met a random lady in real life at a college event and she was very rude so I know what I’m talking about!)

But what would be nice is if they saw the support we have for one another. They’re diving into essentially what is the armpit of CC. I met a whole lot of close friends here, and can’t hate on the site. If we could form a vigilant band of people who shut down braggers and haters, that could be awesome :))
