High School Class of 2018

I just registered for Space Center University down in Houston! I am super excite to go and we get to have like brunch with Astronauts and I am just super excited!!

I got casual pictures, with three outfits. That’s pretty much the standard around here.
Also, my tour of Elmira College was amazing! I fell in love, to be completely honest! It’s so pretty (old architecture, the pretty lawns, and the Puddle - you can’t call it a pond haha) and the vibe I picked up was that it was very community based. I had at least 5 professors and officers walk up to me, introduce themselves, and have a conversation with me! I liked that it seems that profs have personal connections with their students. It’s definitely going to be my most expensive college to choose from, though, at least by my estimations. Hopefully my financial aid will pull through!

lmao what should i even do this summer

@thetex Sit back, Relax, and Eat Snacks. Oh yea and as many essays as you can.

@thetex Learn to drive if you still haven’t. Read lots of books (bc it’s fun and it helps your focus)! Also, try some new stuff. Learn to skate. Learn a new instrument (unless you can’t read music in which case that would take you much longer than a summer). Start a youtube channel. Watch my youtube video about things you can do during the summer and see if you’ll cringe more than I did (shameless self-promo): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6QCPWv1oGik

I’m usually wary about sharing my videos on social media but I trust y’all enough

@thetex Binge watching television shows is also a fun pass of time. Watch anything random show on Netflix and binge watch it. The shows that I would never dare to watch are usually my favorites. Also I recommend watching Mr. Robot by signing up for the free month trial on Amazon prime.

Volunteering at least once or twice a week at a local homeless shelter

Get a head start on some college applications

If you can/want to apply for some jobs in your area. Working can be a pain but I love interacting with customers and staying busy.

College vists are also a good idea if you’re even slightly interested in any local universities.

Hey everyone, can you please help me with picking teachers for LORs. I need a total of 8 letters(5 schools) and 12 if I add Vanderbilt to my list.

Teacher A: Math teacher I’ve had for 5 years and known her for a total of 6. I attend a charter school so I had her since 7th grade Algebra 1, Geometry in 8th, Pre Calc in 10th, AB Calc in 11th and I’ll have her for BC Calc in 12th grade. Math is my weakest subject, but she’s definitely seen me grown academically as student and as a young adult. She also saw me struggle significantly 11th grade year due to all the stress I was facing and was rooting for me to improve for the second semester. She was my biggest motivation and I’m happy to say I did everything I could to do better.

Teacher B: My psychology teacher that I’ve had in 9th and 10th grade. She loves me and even begged me to ask her to write letters. She’s a veteran teacher/professor for 20+ years and even was a professor for Vanderbilt so I think her recommendation will be beneficial and strongly written.

Teacher C: Spanish teacher that I had for Spanish 2 in 9th grade and Spanish 4 last year. Again she saw me struggled in her class a lot and she was my biggest fan to see me improve. I would say I’m pretty close to her and she knows me very well.

Teacher D: My history teacher for AP Human in 9th grade and Aice International History in 10th grade. He wrote a LOR for a precollege summer program(which I didn’t attend because they promised me a full ride but I had to pay a significant amount of money). His letter was really strong and would it be terrible for me to ask him again for college apps? But he says I’m one of his best students ever in his 10+ years of teaching and I’m a very passionate student.

I’m just very conflicted because each teacher knows me pretty well because they’ve had me for years and my graduating class is small(244 students). Would It be a crime if I asked all of them for letters? Because I’m a Florida student, most students apply for public in state schools only and none of them require a LOR. Even the top students don’t really apply to many out of state schools and if they do it’s only one or two. So none of the teachers will be bombarded with requests for letters. Sorry that this post is so long

@Iridescentgaze I would go with Teacher A and D. Because A has known you for a long time and D can say wonderful things about your work ethic.

@singingwriting You host three nights a week?

@arinuma Yeah like a restaurant host. I seat people at their tables and stuff. I gotta pay for all those college apps somehow.

@singingwriting I wasn’t sure exactly what you meant by hosting. I work at Justice, and tutor my local community college’s math and Chem students. And yeah, we gotta make that money! :-bd

Teacher A and Teacher D. Teacher B seems needy, just based on what you posted. I’m a teacher and I would never beg a student to do a LOR.

@apraxiamom beg probably wasn’t the best word choice. It was the week before junior year and I went to her classroom to say hello and she just seem really excited to write a LOR for me because she enjoyed my work ethic as a student.

@arinuma Are you looking at in state or out of state options? I am looking at out of state like 90%.
If anyone here wants to go to college in Minnesota, I’ve been to Gustavus a lot and I have had a lot of family go to the University of Minnesota.

I have a question for everyone…

Should I submit a family member recommendation for a school that permits them? Emory has space for 4 optional recs, and they can come from family members or peers…

I know they aren’t necessary, but will these recs help? Or nah? Especially since I’m getting 2 optional recs already (research PI and outside of school club advisor)…

@LushLillies Ditch the family rec. From what I’ve heard is don’t add an optional LOR unless it adds something to your app and I have a hard time believing that your fifth LOR is going to add something to your app that the other ones don’t already cover.

@singingwriting I’m only looking at two instate schools seriously- the U and Carleton.

@LushLillies Just because it has the space for 4 LOR doesn’t mean you should submit them. Imagine being an admissions officer that has been reading applications all day, then you get to a student who has the 2 regular LOR plus the 4 additional ones. You wouldn’t want to read all of them.

So at most send in 1 or 2 additional recs.

lmao did this thread just die

in other news AP scores came out and I am hyped. Did pretty well, so this is pretty great.

I’m pumped about my scores, too! I got a 4 on both USH and Lit! I’m so proud of myself because I met my goal (which was to get a better score than my WH test, which was a 3)
