High School Class of 2018

@fongbs21 @DaEmmJay23
I so agree with you able the choosing a major for the application part…

A lot of schools do not let you put secondary interests which can be really annoying for those who really want to pursue 2+ interests…

I struggled a lot deciding whether or not to but Computer Science or Biochemistry/Biology as my “intended major” since I am equally interested in them and want to pursue a BA in both. Both are highly popular programs and the majority of the schools I am applying to do not have “Schools of Engineering” or have CS in their Arts and Sciences school as well. In the end, I don’t think it matters as much as you think; colleges know lots of students change their minds! Just put down something you’re comfortable with and can see yourself being interested in as of now.

Unless you are applying to a selective program that you cannot transfer into (ie Wharton at UPenn, Stern at NYU, BME at JHU, transferring between Columbia College and SEAS etc.), then just go with the flow, whatever you’re feeling! :slight_smile:

Hey Guys! For those of you who wanted to know what I did at NASA VESSS three weeks ago, this is the link to the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wD3qLWCMJ4E

Did anyone here get their WOW result back?

@kassh4 My SAMS roommate got rejected. By the way, I am able to still apply? What’s the difference between priority and regular? I’m literally only applying because they seem like an okay school and they keep sending me letters, so might as well check them out.

@ak2018 There is no real difference as far as I am aware, only when you get the result back. I would definitely apply. Wiliams is a great school.

Hey y’all! It’s been awhile. I’ve been constantly studying since I got to CMU, so I haven’t had much free time. I completely switched from Physics and Calculus to classes I felt were more in line with my interests. My dad low-key wasn’t happy with me, but since I want to be a CS major and activist the decision to change classes made sense.
I didn’t bomb my subject tests like I thought with a 720, 740, and 750 on US/Chem/M2 respectively. I got 4’s on 4 of my AP exams this year with a 3 on US gov (was expecting a 3 on lang, so not bad). I also started a tutoring business for the ACT/SAT. I’m charging only 15 per hour rn, but once I’m more established I might go up to 30. I think this is something I’ll continue through college because it’s not that bad. I’m of course going to volunteer as a library tutor to balance out the fact that I’m having kids pay me for something I’d otherwise do for free. :))
I surprisingly just got an email from WOW and I got in even though I never sent second semester grades or updated test scores…(I have a pretty bad record of completing apps) I honestly forgot I applied and thought they didn’t review my application. I also last-minute applied to the MIT and Swarthmore fly-in programs, so fingers crossed for those. I should probably get to bed because I have class early in the morning and a quiz later. Night y’all! (srry my formatting is off. I can’t seem to fix it)

Currently at Dartmouth Bound; it is 1 over here, so going to sleep soon. I will post my thoughts tomorrow.

Also was rejected from WOW, but got the offer of a fee waiver and a phone call, so pretty happy about that. I am anxiously waiting on Discover Wellesley; hoping I will get in.

@Hamlon Lol I’ve literally seen you like twice. We should meet up more :)) Can I have be tutored at a discounted price, particularly free? :)) I’ve improved to a 1290 now, which is great! I’m getting near perfect scores on writing. I’m failing Pre-Calc and I don’t really like the professor, but I do like the TA so I’ll get help from him.

I also literally just submitted my WOW app last night at 2:30am last night and my essay was bomb AF!!

Did anyone get any AP awards? I just got AP Scholar with Distinction!

@lindsgal Ya!! I just got AP Scholar with Distinction too!! (My only award for common app awards section :)) )

@lindsgal I got national AP scholar! Hopefully lots of credits transfer to college
@sewin2music it’s also my only award haha… Oh well

@lindsgal @sewin2music @agentaquastar I got AP Scholar with Distinction! I didn’t even know there were such things as AP Awards and then my friend told me that I probably got it. That email was such a surprise!

@lindsgal just regular AP Scholar

@ak2018 I thought you get free test prep already from SAMS though? They’d probably be more help than me because I only do 1-2 hours a week per student.

So tonight I had a little pow-wow with my parents about not having a list of colleges I am applying to. It’s not that I don’t know where I am applying to, it’s just that I don’t have a physical list that I know exactly where I am going, primarily because I don’t know where I want to apply as my safeties… oh well.

So when does everyone go back to school? I go back on August 16

I’m kind of ready to go back because all of my summer work is making me stressed out and I’m just ready to turn it in and get it off of my plate.

@madison2000 aww good luck with all the summer work! My school legally can’t give us any (don’t know why but not complaining)… Even our summer reading is just “recommended” bc they aren’t allowed to assign any work about the books until 2 weeks of school have gone by.
I go back after Labor Day.

I sort of have the opposite problem with my parents. I’ve narrowed my list down to cheaper colleges but they still really want me to apply to our in state flagship even though it’s wayyy too expensive… And they keep getting mad when I talk abt community college or my safety…

@agentaquastar So how do you make sure that you get all of your AP work done in the allowed time of 180 or so school days? For example for APUSH we had to teach ourselves Period 1 during the summer and even when it came down to the last period (period 9) we had to condense it into 3 days due to not having enough time.

@madison2000 we BARELY finished the content for APUSH! my school starts 2nd week of september which puts the AP kids at a huge disadvantage… we had 2 in class days to review for the exam and that was it, the rest of the studying had to be on our own!!

@madison2000 ^yup! It’s a lot of craming and zooming through the whole year. I think apush hw alone took me 2 hr each night I had it (blocked schedule). We didn’t really get to the last unit, but thankfully there wasn’t much on the exam. We often have snow/flood related closings as well, and our teachers complain abt lack of time quite a bit. It’s alright I guess… Students who want to do well will put a little extra time into review the week before the test

@Hamlon We do, it’s just going kind of slow. But we’re definitely moving. :))
