High School Class of 2018

I would just like to announce that as of I yesterday, I have started my app for UPitt!!

I’ve been in Pittsburgh for three weeks now and I’m loving the city so much. The museums are wonderful and the people are so polite. I could really see myself going to school here. I’m going to go to an official Blue and Gold Day next Saturday, but after doing some unofficial tours of UPitt on my own, since CMU is literally right next to UPitt, and the campus is pretty big. I didn’t really get inside any of the buildings but I should be able to on the visit next week.

My plan right now is to complete at least one app every two weeks until school starts. The only thing is that since I want to do the finance and family stuff with my parents, I’m going to have to wait until mid-August, when I get back from SAMS, to submit any college or scholarship apps. When it comes to finances, I’m pretty set. I finally got around to doing those net-price calculators for the schools I know I want to apply to and showed my parents and they said the they weren’t too bad. Since my parents do plan to contribute quite a bit to my college education along with all the money I’ll get from internships and that I plan to get an on-campus job, it’s looking like I won’t graduate with too much debt.

I plan on getting through my UPitt app by the end of this month and then starting my CMU and VT (and potentially Penn State) apps next month. I also have my mandatory CMU interview, that was scheduled through SAMS, next Tuesday and I’m going to spend much of my weekend to prepare a little. I’m planning on my CMU app while I’m at SAMS so I can get ā€œinsider admissions tipsā€ while I’m filling out the app. I’ve analyzed rolling admissions with my Matriculate advisor and I’m comfortable with doing it despite the few risks. Both UPitt and Penn State are on rolling admissions so depending on how it all goes I might start off my senior year with some rejections or acceptances.

I just like to say thank you guys for helping me, and each other to reach this point. We made it this far and we only have a little ways to go. Also, whoever told me about Matriculate, THANK YOU!!! That program has been a godsend. I would’ve never explored out-of-state schools such as UPitt without it.

HERE’S TO THE CLASS OF 2018 COLLEGE APP SEASON (Can’t wait to be emotionally devastated by rejections!! :)) )

College apps for local Canadian universities here doesn’t start until May 2018, I can’t imagine applying for college before senior year even starts lol

Edit: Just reread and you said started. Same deal here with my US universities. I’m 200 words in to my CommonApp essay, ā€œstartedā€ it a month ago but I only spent like 2 hours on it so far haha. Luckily the word limit is 650 words!

Also for anyone interested in cybersecurity or programming who are in the following states: (Virginia, Michigan, Iowa, Hawaii, Nevada, Delaware, and Rhode Island) and don’t have that much to do this summer, check out this program FOR FREE! https://www.sans.org/CyberStartUS

@agentaquastar Just curious, what is the last unit in APUSH? My SAT II test went up to 2000 so I’m curious how recent APUSH covers.

Fun fact: In my Canadian History class, we skipped one entire unit because we were really behind. That was the Cold War. My teacher just didn’t put that unit on the final exam!

Guys I’m scared to take senior pictures because I don’t like doing hair and stuff and literally have never put makeup on my face and don’t know w t f to wear but also don’t want to not do senior pictures because they get used for so many things and if you don’t submit one they use your terrible school photo. Idk anxiteyyyy

@snowfairy137 I can totally relate! I don’t even own makeup!! I feel so conflicted. If I were to buy makeup and figure out how to use it, then yes the picture would turn out nicer but it also wouldn’t really be me. For hair, all I can do is curl it but even then I get a crazy slot of fly-aways. For my school, if you don’t get senior pictures done with the designated photography company, then you don’t get a picture in the yearbook. Just an empty box with your name underneath at the end of the senior section. @-)

@sewin2music ahh for us you’re pretty much on your own, you just have to submit a photo or they’ll use a regular school picture which looks really bad next to all the nice pictures

@acomfysofa My textbook went up to 9/11 but I assume that when they update it, it will go up to the 2008/2009 recession and its effects. After that I assume that Obama and Trump will be a period of their own just because of all of the policy making (domestic and foreign) that has and will occur in the near future.

@sewin2music and @snowfairy137 Makeup and hair are things that are meant to be done for fun so don’t stress out about it. If you don’t feel confident wearing foundation or maybe doing your eyebrows you don’t have to, its your photo, do what makes you feel your best (whether that may be just wearing mascara). Ask your friends or family if they have any makeup they never used or brushes that they haven’t used in a while (then wash it very well) so you don’t have to buy it. I don’t recommend sharing makeup with other people because that could lead to infection or breakouts.

You also don’t even have to buy foundation, go to Ulta or Sephora and ask for them to color match you to a good photographed foundation and ask for a sample of it. You’ll get just enough for one or two applications.

As for hair there are ways to help with fly-aways. Hairspray is the best thing for you whether you straighten or curl your hair. Ask friends or family if they would want to do your hair or makeup, I bet they would feel flattered that you asked.

Sorry I know it’s a lot but makeup and hair is just something I am passionate about for the artistic reasons, I even thought about writing my college application on it (as an artistic release after I quit dance and theater). If you have any questions at all feel free to PM me, I would love to help!

Just remember there will be girls who will wear no makeup and then there will be girls who are wearing foundation and false eyelashes (me lol), it’s just based on comfort levels.

@sewin2music and @snowfairy137 I agree with @madison2000 100%. If you guys don’t feel comfortable wearing tons of makeup then don’t. There are tons of makeup products that are not as heavy as foundation such as bb cream. Mascara also always looks nice on the eyes. Then as far as lip products go you can just use lip balm. Do whatever makes you comfortable, but also consider how you want the picture to look like.

Foundation is tricky, sometimes employees at Ulta and Sephora have no idea what they’re doing. They will sometimes give you a foundation that is too orange, pink or yellow toned. I would recommend bringing baby wipes or any cleansing/makeup wipes and test foundations and/or bb cream on your neck. I repeat test it on your neck rather than your face!!! Then you can just keep trying foundations until you find the right match.
Ask family or friends for makeup brushes and tools, if you can’t I would recommend buying E.L.F. selfie foundation brush or their ultimate blending brush. Both brushes are $6 and will blend your foundation/bb cream flawlessly.

For hair I know this sounds lame but try looking up youtube tutorials for different hairstyles. Pinterest works as well. I feel that you will find one that you think suits your facial structure. Simply straightening your hair is a classic option.

This is coming from a girl who is obsessed with makeup and has spent a little bit too much time watching beauty tutorials on youtube.

@sewin2music @snowfairy137 I’m personally not good at makeup either but for prom I searched online for what I wanted and bought some cheap makeup and played around with it for a few weeks. With help from my aunt, my makeup looked really good for prom. Ulta or Sephora should be a help. An Ulta employee was able to help me out when I was completely lost about foundation and everything lol. If you’re only gonna use the makeup once or twice, keep it cheap! Look for cheap (but still good) alternatives for everything.

Also, you can definitely look up video tutorials for hair, but if you’re like me, you still won’t be able to do it lol. I would say just to keep it simple by straightening or curling it. Plus, you really don’t need anything over the top for senior pictures.

Pinterest is your friend! It helped me a lot when I was looking for makeup and hair ideas for prom.

Do you guys know when we can start on our applications? Like I know that for the common app, the accounts roll over, but if i start the common app now will all the information also roll over? Same question for coalition apps and UC apps? thanks!

@saxynerd I believe for the Common App the main questions will roll over but school specific questions will not. School specific questions open Aug 1. UC app opens August 1 but you can’t submit until Nov 1. Sorry if I got anything wrong

@sewin2music ok, thanks! I’ll probably try to finish the main questions then, so I can save some time in the fall. My fall is going to be suppeerrr busy between marching band and work, so I want to try to get a head start!

Question: If I’m not taking a math senior year at my high school and I’m taking it at my community college instead, will USC accept transcripts from community colleges too?

@ddeebaa I would assume so, but sending an email can never hurt.

@ddeebaa You have to send all transcripts from any high school or college you attend.

@madison2000 @Iridescentgaze haha I don’t even own a straightener

My Doge 4 Family House fundraiser raised $200 in dogecoins so far. Goal is $3,000 in dogecoins. Looking forward to seeing the full amount raised so it can be donated!

Has anybody started working on supplements?
