High School Class of 2018

@preciousdiamond I feel the same way. I sometimes struggle writing about myself; it’s so weird.

So, for some reason, Kent State University doesn’t do the whole Common App thing, so I have to apply directly through them. No biggie, especially because I’m literally 2 steps away from sending in my application??? They ask almost nothing, and they don’t require an essay. The only thing I’m waiting on is a response from their team about something that I screwed up and it’s not letting me fix it haha I clicked to fill a bubble I didn’t mean to and now it won’t unclick! So yeah, just that, the electronic signature, and sending it on (and at that point, paying them the app fee). I’m so close to applying to my first college, it’s so scary! But also, I’m really excited :))

Are you guys 100% sure what you want to major in? I’m undecided between math & computer science, but if I major in either then I want to minor in the other but I also want to minor in film studies and it’s all very confusing.

@gigichuck solution: minor in both. I wanna double makor in robotics/mechanical engineering and physics but will drop physics if it doesn’t work out with the school I choose, and I wanna minor in spanish, russian, physics, comp sci, philosophy, and/or electrical engineering hah. I’ll figure it out.

My dad actually double majored math and comp sci.

You declare double major after you get accepted, right?

@gigichuck usually, yes. Some colleges have specific dual degree programs between different schools that you apply to. But unless you’re doing one of those, you declare your second major once you’re enrolled.

@gigichuck keep in mind the cost and how long you want to spend it college as well though… Double majoring in math and comp sci should be doable since some of the course reqs may overlap. Film studies would be really hard to achieve with math usually… Try to see if your AP credits can save you some time and money as well…

You could always join a film club or just make your own films on the side…

A minor in film should be too hard.

I don’t think I will be applying to Colleges of Engineering at the three UCs I’m applying to. UCB and UCLA are way too competitive. I’m really interested in their Environmental Science programs so I don’t want to risk getting shut out of those universities completely. UC Santa Cruz (my safety) doesn’t have Civil Engineering so I wouldn’t apply to their engineering college anyways.
However, I will be applying as a Civil Engineering major to the private schools I’m applying to that offer it. So Johns Hopkins, Northeastern, George Washington, and Santa Clara. They’re already reaches based on stats and tuition so I might as well apply for engineering.

My final list (hopefully)
High Reach: Harvard SCEA
Reach: Johns Hopkins, Northeastern
High Match: UC Berkeley, UCLA,
Schools I can probably get into but may not be able to afford: George Washington, American, Santa Clara, Fordham
Safety: UCSC

I still have no progress on the Common App essay! Wow I love procrastinating!! But I’ve at least started the UC short answers. They are much easier for me.

Hey everyone, it has felt like forever since I’ve posted on here. I’ve been focusing on my dual enrollment classes and I’m almost done. I just have two more assignment for my World Religions class and Intro to Business. I also just finished my Intro to Ethics class at my local community college campus. The professor was super funny and cool(he’s a magician and a great story teller). He was also inspirational. I can’t wait to encounter great professors and interesting people in University just like I did in that class.

I’ve been putting my common application essays on hold for August because I was seriously burnt out from senior year. My therapist suggested I take a break in June then focus more on ACT studying and my classes during July. With my classes finally over I’m ready to drill like crazy for the ACT, prep materials to give my recommenders and work on my essays.

Has anyone officially got their senior year schedule? I’m curious as to what courses everyone is taking.

God, I try not to think about senior year, but here I go.

AP Spanish Lang
AP Calc BC
AP Econ
AP Physics C
AP Lit
Gov and Law 2
Brit LIt
Sociology
Anatomy(might switch it out for college prep writing)

@Iridescentgaze Schedules were posted yesterday for me but I’m currently fighting with my guidance counselor to get it changed.

Criminal Justice Operations 4
AP Capstone Research
AP English Literature & Composition
U.S. Government Honors / African American History (EW!!! I asked for AP Computer Science Principles)
Probability & Statistics Honors (Asked for calculus)
AP Economics
Forensic Science

Haha I guess it’s about time to release the beast that I have subjected my self to as well…

To add to the fun, do you guys want to include how you feel about each class?

AP Calc BC- YAY Math!! This is like seriously not sarcasm. I love math and I’m going to have the same teacher from last year!

Madrigals (advanced mixed choir)- excited for this too!! This is my second year for this level and can’t wait to listen as our sound improves

AP English Lit & Comp- I hope I get my sophomore teacher again! He was so entertaining! Other than that, :((

AP Comp Sci Principles- I honestly have no idea what this is. I was suposed to take the other AP Comp Sci class but it didn’t fit in my schedule. Any insight as to what this is???

AP Gov/ Honors Econ-… No comment :(( :(( :expressionless:

AP Bio- I am excited for the class but dreading the teacher. I hope she doesn’t mess with my love for bio…

Overall, I’m pretty excited for this year! Except for the stressful common app process, rejections, etc…

@sewin2music From my understanding AP Computer Science A is a Java programming course. AP Computer Science Principles on the other hand is a course that provides a broad overview of computer science, focusing on the 7 “Big Ideas” of computer science: creativity, abstraction, data & information, algorithms, programming, the internet, and global impacts.

@Phantomlink Oh ok. Well I guess Principles might be better for me then. I wanted to take comp sci in the first place to see if it was a field that interested me, specifically for application in bioinformatics/computational biology. Thank you!!

Well the college I’m taking classes in is on the quarter system which pretty much means I take different classes in fall, winter, and spring. For fall, I’m signed up for
Computer programming II (pretty much the one after AP CSA
General Physics IV
Electricity (prereq for robotics)
Linear Algebra

My reaction to all of the above is yayy. Although it is a slight overload of classes.

I don’t have my official schedule yet :(( I hate how long my school waits to release it!

But I do have my college app list down! It is a lot different from the lists I’ve seen on here (not necessarily this thread but CC in general) so I’m kinda low key nervous to even say it but you guys are more chill than the rest of CC, for the most part, so here it goes!

Financial reach: Elmira College (although not as much because I’m getting a lot of scholarship money already, but still)
The rest of my list:
SUNY Fredonia (my top choice out of the SUNYs I’m applying to)
SUNY Geneseo
University at Buffalo (SUNY school, just not in the name)
Kent State University (second choice - after Elmira and before Fredonia)

@marg532 I feeel. A lot of the top schools are out of reach for me, fiancially, but I still wanna apply ahhhh

My college list keeps shifting. I just want to apply based on finances, but my parents keep scolding me bc I’m putting myself down by applying to places that “anyone can get into.” It’s kind of frustrating… I wish they would have more respect for me and everyone else applying there…
