High School Class of 2018

Would this be an ok common app essay idea? I’m having so much trouble deciding what to write…

I would choose my interest in art and write about a little walk that I’m planning to take soon. There’s a lovely little greenhouse about a mile away that I always pass on runs and I’ve been planning to draw it for a month now but due to work and a little embarrassment I haven’t yet. But I want to talk about how my interest for art has made me view the world in a more wondrous way. I want to describe the walk and how I pass through the heart of the city I live in, with historical trails, an art museum, floating docks, and tons of diverse people. Every little detail of life becomes more beautiful to me when I’m walking and taking in how light glitters down, the vitality of the city, etc… And my view of the city which was once negative, is now more positive.
I plan to write this as a little narrative leading up to me finally sketching out the greenhouse…? I really don’t know if this is a dumb idea though.

@agentaquastar That is an absolutely beautiful idea.

Can a headache combined with jaw/back tooth pain be a sign of wisdom teeth? My dentist said to keep an eye out for wisdom tooth pain cause they were coming in. Idk if its like a placebo though because my dentist just told me that and I’m thinking about it or if its legit.

I was just granted an interview to try and start my gold award! It will be hard to get approved and an even more difficult task after, but I’ll try my best!

So, first day of school down. My calc teacher doesn’t grade hw, but if we get below a 70% on a test and we did all the hw, he’ll bring our grade up. He also uses textbook problems on his tests, so I’ll probably end up doing most of the hw. Also, my AP English teacher threw a timed essay at us today. We knew it was coming, but she didn’t tell us what it was on. So that was interesting.

At Lehigh, I’m taking an intro women’s studies course. It’s mostly discussion-based, but we do have two tests and an activism project. Also, I already made a friend in there, so that’s nice. I have a course at Moravian tomorrow so we’ll see how that goes.

Me at noon yesterday: I’m gunna get my sleep schedule back on track so I don’t crash and burn my first week of classes!
Also me, at 3, almost 4 in the morning: well this is going swell

The past two days of school have been great.

During first period, my World History teacher came in on a cane, fell over, did a tumble roll, and came back up to the podium all fine and dandy. =)) He’s around 50 years old, so I thought I would have to call 911 on the first day. :)) But yeah, he’s pretty cool. Second period AP Psychology is pretty fun. A lot of my friends are in there too. We introduced ourselves and talked about our summer. I mentioned NASA and Carnegie Mellon and everyone applauded lol. I had my track coach for 4th Period Government and had my 10th grade English teacher for AP Lit. Yesterday was just as good. Calc BC seemed a little scary, but I’m not that scared and it seems really doable. GEMS 12 (Philosophy) was likely the most eye-opening class I’ve ever taken. We talked about appearance and reality and I was so blown away by how much learned. AP Physics C is pretty fun too, except that I already have two packets due the next day. :)) My online AP Comp Sci class is pretty chill, not that much work.

Overall, this school year seems pretty okay. I’m just really busy.

Just got my schedule this morning (senior year starts in exactly a week from now rip??) and I had a scare already! My Lang teacher was listed as Ms. B, a teacher who totally doesn’t teach Lang, and not Mr. C, who most definitely does teach Lang. So I did some sleuthing (bc that’s what every 16 y/o girl does at 6 30 in the morning right?) and it’s definitely some weird typo, because other friends have Lang in the same room number as me, but the teacher is listed as Mr. C, as expected.

But scare aside, here is my official schedule (we run A-D days but basically its the same as an A-B day schedule for most of the school):

Period 1: Study Hall (ABCD)
Period 2: Statistics (ABCD)
Period 3: AP Gov/Econ (AC/BD)
Period 4: French 4 (ABCD)
Period 5: AP Lang (ABCD)
Period 6: Study Hall (ABCD)
Period 7: Lunch (ABCD)
Period 8: Gym/Vocal Jazz (AC/BD)
Period 9: Band/Chorus (AC/BD)
*Independent Study in the Sciences to be in one of the study halls (why I have 2 full year every day study halls haha)

@Marg532 I think it is great that your school splits Band and Chorus up. My junior high did that. At my kids high school they both require their own class period which makes it very difficult to take both along with other requirements. Many band kids would like to do both but simply can’t.

Currently a 3 hour line at my school to fix my schedule so I just walked back home… Thank goodness we’re seniors so we have a little extra leverage when scheduling. I’ll just email and wait till school starts.

So update on the whole weird AP Lang teacher arrangement thing… Apparently it wasn’t a typo. They have Mr. C teach some 9th grade english classes in an effort to get more people to take AP English classes when they get older, but that resulted in him not having enough time to teach all of the classes of AP English. He is teaching all of AP Literature classes, but he is now splitting the AP Lang classes with Mrs. B. This really sucks, because one of the big reasons I’m taking AP Lang was so I could have him again this year, because I really like him as a teacher and as a person, as well.

I might try to make it so one of my study halls is switched out with one of his AP Lang classes (mainly period 1, because I know he has a class then), but I don’t know if the counseling office will let me (they really frown upon switching classes for kids just because they want a different teacher, and I guess I understand why). I liked Mrs. B as a teacher, but the last time I had her was in 8th grade, and from people who had her in 9th grade, it sounds like she piles on mounds of homework, which is very different from Mr. C, who doesn’t assign too much outside of class, and has everything due a week before the end of the marking period. This just feels really weird and I don’t like it.

@Marg532 sorry you won’t get the better teacher, but I hope you still take Lang! It’s a really great class.

Also this may not happen for you, but I had a teacher in 9th grade that was just ok and gave lots of homework. She was kind of strict and sassy then so some ppl liked her and others not so much.

I took AP euro with her the next year and she was a lot more lenient on rules. She let us use our phones when we needed to, listen to music if we were reading, and eat in her class. We also had more relaxed talks instead of actual lectures.

We wondered why she was so drastically different from freshmen yr, and she told us freshmen come in and are still very immature and untrustworthy. She had to control phone usage because a lot of them won’t control themselves otherwise. I’m not sure if her policies were the best, but I do see how we’ve matured since freshmen year.

@agentaquastar I do plan on taking AP Lang either way haha I’m going to try the first week or so with her, see how she’s going to teach the class, look at the syllabus (if she even writes out what we’re going to cover, most teachers at my school don’t do that for some reason), and all that jazz. If I don’t feel comfortable in the class by the time the drop period is close to over, I’m going to talk to my Lit teacher and see if he had any room in his 1st period, or if he had a 6th period class, and if he does then I’m going to see if the counseling office would let me switch.

I definitely do get the whole different attitudes towards different grades - my APUSH teacher was way more chill with us juniors then he was when we were all in 8th grade (he often complained to us about how sweaty/stinky they all were last year haha) so that’s why I’m going to give her a chance. It just bums me out, because I was looking forward to Mr C again!

So, I think I’m going to add Lehigh to my list of schools. So far I like the campus (except for the hills) and the people in my class. I wasn’t planning on applying there, but I really like it. When I have free time after one of my classes, I’m gonna explore campus a little more.

Is anyone here applying to Lehigh? I think it’s almost like a hidden gem. A lot of people from my school rule it out right away since it’s only 40 minutes away, but we forget how good of a school it is.

How are yall liking your classes so far?Because I love mine and I’ve only been in school for a week! I plan to do a review of each one at some point!

The first few days of senior year have been so surreal so far! I’m actually making a bunch of new friends at lunch and it’s already so much better than last year. We literally played a variation of musical chairs for a little bit during AP Calc BC, which I have to say is surprisingly not that hard of a class. My AP Physics C lecture gave me a basic intro to both derivatives and integrals that’s helping me out a lot. Speaking of AP Physics C, I got my first quiz grade back, an 86%! (And my POE teacher last year told me I’d never last lol. Boy am I proving him wrong) There’s no way I’m dropping it now. We also had a study hall in Gems Philosophy today which I used for AP Lit.

In other news, I submitted my app to UPitt yesterday!

Also, for those who want to watch, here’s a video of my NASA mission’s press conference:

Anyone have any AP statistics tips? I go to an IB school and this is my first AP class lol

My school gives out these tickets that we put in a bin to win prizes. Since my English class did an essay on the first day of school, my principal gave us all one. I won three cookies, which would be a lot better if I were to actually at school for lunch. I can’t even use them so I’m giving them away lol.

Anyway, I gave my first speech in my communications class. It could have been A LOT worse. I’m just hoping for a good grade.

My district started school today but I’m doing full time dual enrollment so I’m not starting for like 3 weeks. Slept from 6 AM to 3 PM today… great job me.

Bruh all I know right now is Hurricane Irma better chill…I live in South Carolina and Irma has the potential to be even worse than Harvey and could really mess up the Southeast!
