@acomfysofa Look around on their websites and see if you find things you want to know more about. Maybe when the colleges speak to you or when you get to their booth or something you may come up with some questions on the spot.
Colby’s really good! I’m not a big fan of Waterville itself, but the campus is really pretty and they’re expanding both on course offerings and facilities.
I got a hundred on my Chem test! It’s definitely my hardest class this year, so I’m really happy. I also presented with my group in lit today. I was worried because we were assigned groups and as usual, I had to handle the ppt and all of the editing. Group projects are tiring… But we got a 98 somehow, so I’m relieved.
I hope school is going well for everyone. Keep working hard!
Is getting mail because of SAT scores common? I got this Boot Camp thing from Dartmouth in the mail. Hope they sent it because of my August score that isn’t released yet, which would mean I have a shot at a full ride in the US…
Hey Guys,
I just came back from VEX Robotics mentoring at my old middle school and it was pretty phenomenal! About 40 kids showed up to our first meeting and I literally wanted to shed some tears at how diverse they were! There were like 10 women of color and 20 men of color! And let me tell you, they were a ROUDY, LOUD bunch! Couldn’t stop talking to save their lives and that hasn’t changed since I was there. But other than that, it was a pretty cool experience. When the Robotics sponsor introduced me as the high school mentor, everybody clapped. They were like “YOU’RE IN THE 12TH GRADE??”
:)) I also saw this little kid come up and explain the different parts of a robot and I swear the kid reminded me of myself back in the 6th grade. He explained everything like a pro and I was so proud of him :)) We then watched the game video, and had the kids research ideas for their robot designs.
After talking with the Robotics sponsor, I have been given the responsibility to teach programming basics to the kids who want to program. So essentially, I’m teaching One of the things I explained to the kids is that so many people want to build, but not enough want to program. I actually found out that about 10 - 15 people want to learn how to program. Which is great! I’m currently going through websites since I have to submit a curriculum by Tuesday.
Also, on Thursday, I’m going to be doing a presentation on high school STEM opportunities and minorities in STEM. I would really love it if you guys could share why you believe it is important for minorities to consider, and not rule out, STEM fields.
@acomfysofa I got that from Dartmouth a few days ago. At this point I’m used to getting college mail every day. One day last week I got 7 in one day. I’m also getting a lot of emails still. It’s that time of year again…
@ak2018 I think it’s important for minorities to consider STEM fields so that there is an increased diversity in research. Right now research is mainly done, in my opinion, by old white men. There’s a lot of accidental racial and gender bias in research, particularly in social science fields, because of a lack of diversity on the part of the researchers. By having more minorities in STEM fields, there will be a greater opportunity to reduce and eliminate racism and sexism in the workplace and an increased diversity in research and, therefore, a better knowledge of those underrepresented groups.
I’m getting lots of college mail every day…I’m actually considering doing a list of the ones I’m considering the most.

I wonder if unroll.me works for colleges? I haven’t tried it on my 2nd (spam/college) email.
I decided to email a college I’m considering to answer the questions about a full ride scholarship they had(plus a laptop, travel expenses and stipend) on Monday. They still have not answered me. I’m very excited about this opportunity because my gpa is way above the requirement and I just need to increase my ACT score(whenever they reschedule my test center).
At an Ivy university fair, is it okay to ask for a fee waiver? I know in Canada whenever there’s a fair, (Canadian) universities will also usually give out fee waivers to anyone who ask.
I can afford the fees, but $90 x 4 = $360 is a pretty significant amount to me.
@dietcig I saw the video on Instagram, but never thought too much of it. That’s a very good point about the light sensor. I’ll definitely include that in my PowerPoint.
Also, does anyone know where I can get some good AP Physics C resources? My first test is on Tuesday.
@ak2018 I only took physics 1, but khan academy has great vids if you haven’t used them already. I got a 60 on my first physics test, but I watched every khan academy vid each unit after that shock, and aced every test after
I think I’m pretty sure they have some vids on physics c as well.
Guys I’m super stressed. So, the time has come to pay for my college credit courses, and when I told my mom how much she had to pay, she FLIPPED! So, for 2 classes (one all year, one half a year) I have to pay $165 each, or $330 in total. This is for 6 credits. 6 credits at that CC is $990, so I would pay half of what I would be paying later down the road in college, not to mention that other schools are way more expensive per credit hour than my local CC is. Another reason she was freaking out was because I’m taking another half year course that would cost another $165 in the spring, making 9 credit hours total this year. Total, that would be around $495, which yes is super expensive but NOT compared to the $1,485 it would cost if I were to do it in college. I get why she’s worried, but it’s so much cheaper this way!
Related to that topic is that my mom bases all her college knowledge on what the case was for her, in the late 80s, and my sister, who barely had any college credits and only applied to one college, 4 years ago. She tries telling me that all of these college credits, even if they all do transfer (including my APs, accounting for the conversion policy at each school), that doesn’t mean I have to take less credits, or even potentially graduate a semester early. She bases this knowledge off of what my sister went through. At most, my sister went into college with 9 credits (DE French and a 4 on AP English) at a SUNY school. She didn’t have to take a foreign language (assuming that’s where her 6 credits of DE French came into the picture), and she’s an English major, so they probably didn’t accept her AP English course as credit towards her major; if anything, it may have placed her into higher level English classes earlier, or waived prereqs for higher level English classes.
Compare this to me, who (if I get all of my classes paid for by my family, and excluding any AP scores for tests I’m taking this year) has a max of around 30 credits going into college, if they accept all my DE credits. For sake of this example, say I go to my sister’s college. They consider a full course load per semester to be 5 classes, or 15 credit hours. Say if they counted all of my credits and lump them together. This potentially gets me a year out of college early, or allows me to take advantage of study abroad opportunities or internships with a lighter course load one semester, all without worrying about whether I would graduate on time. At the very least, I get elective credits or placements into higher level courses.
Sorry this was a really long post, but I needed to get it out of my head, and maybe (?) some of you have any advice on how to approach this with my mom. She’s looking at not paying for my business classes, which would really suck, especially because if I were to pay for it, what little money I have saved up from working last year would be completely gone.
I visited the University of Idaho, my saftey school, today and really loved it!
Here’s what I posted about it on the NMF thread:
I visted the University of Idaho today and I would highly recommend it to a NMF who wants a smaller school enviorment (about 10,000 students). Very nice personalized tour and meetings with deparment heads, up to date campus faclities (labs, dinning hall, furinture, athletic faclities etc.), helpful friendly people, and great food. Lots of oppertunities for research and faculty who are excited to help you find and oppurtunities and get involved. Also us very fair about transfer credits, which is important to me. Also, its a full ride with NMF!
@Marg532 Sorry your Mom’s so worried, but hearing about a lot of money all at once combined with a stressful day could have made her freak out more than intended. You could try to look up/call some of the colleges you’re interested in to make sure that the credits you have will transfer. It’s true that some DE credits won’t count and some APs (even 5s) won’t transfer esp for specific majors (ex: VA tech engineering doesn’t accept AP physics even with a 5 on the exam). If things really have changed since your sister’s time, this would be great evidence to show your mom and get her to relax some. Good luck…!
@agentaquastar The DE credits are a guaranteed transfer to any SUNY school, as the CC I’m getting credits from is part of the SUNY system, as well. I’ve looked up the AP credit policies for all the schools I’m applying to, too, and I should be getting credit for them all. The only thing that might be a problem are my history/gov’t APs, as I’m planning on majoring in International Studies or Political Science in college. Also, I found a form that could potentially get us 25-50% off of the tuition price, if they accept our financial need or not, so that could possibly be a solution!
I finally wrote my college essay!!! I’m so happy!! Today, I will be hitting submit for both the UCF app and UT Dallas app!
SAT scores. Tomorrow.
@acomfysofa I’m excited and nervous. ACT scores also come out the following day.
Best of luck to you guys! @acomfysofa @xxluvforeverxx
Questbridge is stressing me the heck out. I hope that I can get my essays where I want them before the deadline.
