@h0kulani I’ve been to every homecoming and am going to my senior one. But I’m the kinda person who can just get with my friends and dance. I have some friends who don’t like school dances, though. I don’t blame them for not wanting to go. I kinda just see it as a reason to hang out with friends and have fun.
I just submitted my first application! (Its to my safety school and didn’t require any essays but honestly its not a bad choice cause I’d get a full ride).
@sewin2music how long did it take to get admitted to UNM? I still need to do the Regents/Presidential application (not NMF because I’m a junior who hasn’t taken the PSAT yet) but I’ve submitted the admissions application.
@CharlotteLetter I think it took about 1.5 weeks. The application portal says that I started the app on Sept 3 and I was accepted Sept 19. I can’t remember if I submitted the app the same day though… It shouldn’t be too long! Just hang in there!
@sewin2music Cool! Did you get notified through the portal or by email or…? And have you been offered any scholarships? I’m in-state and am hoping for at least UNM Scholars or Woodward, although I’m applying to Regents and Presidential as well (I don’t have amazing EC’s, my GPA is good, and my SAT is okay). Regents is basically the same as the NMF scholarship, except it’s competitive
@CharlotteLetter I was notified by email. The email said that they’d mail the admission letter and UNM student ID for the online portal in a few days, but I have yet to recieve that. Also, no scholarships yet! I hope you can get Regeants!
@CharlotteLetter @sewin2music I just submitted my UNM application yesterday! I need to send my transcript yet, though.
I’m falling more and more in love with Hampshire college, they don’t require test scores to get in!
I got back from the Swarthmore fly-in yesterday and I have to say I really love the school. All the professors I met were warm and supportive and I noticed that most left their doors open for students to drop-in and ask questions. On-campus food options are a bit limited and hours inconvenient, but the surrounding area has a good variety of restaurants. The train station is literally on the edge of campus, so easy access to Philly. I’ve always heard Swarthmore students described as quirky, but that’s not necessarily the word I would use. Many of the students I spoke to were just really passionate about certain subjects or were a bit introverted. I didn’t really notice a stress culture, but maybe that’s because my host was so chill and I was only there for two full days. The school always felt too quiet(even on the weekend), but that just might have been me. One thing that really surprised me was walking towards my dorm late Friday night only to find multiple groups of people huddled outside the entrance passing around earthy-smelling “cigarettes.” My host and a couple other students told me that underage-drinking and drug use aren’t really condemned here by administrators/campus police. It was more like a “Don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. All in all, I’m definitely going to apply. The people I met really shaped my perception of Swarthmore and I learned a bit more about what I needed in a school vs what I wanted.
I ended up not going. Normally, I actually love big social events, but the group I was supposed to go with ditched me
I’m kind of on the edge about going to homecoming. I may or may not go. Usually it’s a bunch of junior high kids and it’s super cringey (my school is a jr/sr high school, 7-12).
I’m almost ready to click send on all of my applications! I just need some info from my guidance counselor, which I should get this week at my senior meeting. Then, I need her to send transcripts and I need to send my SAT scores to the colleges that don’t have them yet. I also need my recommenders to get recommending haha and I have to fill out my brag sheet before my senior meeting, too. The brag sheet kind of sounds like a college app in itself haha one of the questions is literally the “state a challenge you’ve faced and how you faced it” prompt from Common App, just different wording. The other questions are literally things on the Common App (such as describing my top ECs) and others are super vague and I don’t know how to answer them without being corny (What makes you different then other students at my school). I wish my counselor hadn’t retired, because he would’ve written a good rec letter without the stupid brag sheet.
lol gotta love the shitposting (i hope?) on r/ApplyingtoCollege I forgot I can’t link the sub so here it is:
“I’m pretty active in the high school discussion threads on College Confidential (and other college related communities) and as a result, I’ve made some pretty good friends that I’m really grateful for. Everything was going perfectly fine until about a month ago, when about 7 of these people confessed their feelings for me in my DMs. I really don’t understand why this is happening, and I have no idea what to do about it. Has something similar happened to anyone else?? Do you guys recommend steering clear of CC relationships altogether? I’m just trying to get into college y’all”
@marg532 your post just saved me bc I completely forgot I need to do my brag sheet by tomorrow! This is so tedious
Here’s an update on how I’ve been doing in my classes so far; the last week has been rough.
AP Art History - 88 (+/- 0) - I was so confident my grade would go up because I thought I did well on this last test, but it turns out that I screwed up the essay portion, which was 50% of my grade.
DE College Algebra - 102 (-1) - I got a 102 on the last test, which actually brought my grade down a little because I got a 103 on the first one. Still a really good grade to have, though.
AP English Lit - 94 (-6) - My teacher actually put in more than the syllabus, and thank goodness, I still have a solid grade.
DE Personal Finance - 100 (+/- 0)- still nothing as usual lol
AP Chemistry - ??? - The test isn’t in yet. I am 90% sure I failed the MC and got about a third of the points on the FRQs, but there’s a curve, so I don’t know exactly what I got.
AP Macro - 90 (+/- 0) (it’s actually a 90.1, up from an 89.7 a few days ago, so that’s always positive)
AP US Government - 93 (-3) - I got a 60 on the midterm, which hurt a little.
This week has been an eye-opener for me and shows me that I’m definitely gonna have to study a lot harder if I want to pass these AP exams so I can try to start university as a junior. Overall, I am still very pleased with how I am doing.
I also signed up for DE Intro to Computer Concepts at my CC online, which starts in about a month. I wanna be done with AP Gov and Macro (both online) by then so I’m not getting my entire life ruined by 8 college level/actual college classes at the same time.
Also, I’m gonna visit one of my prospective schools (my first choice) in a couple weeks. Even though I am only applying to ~4 in-state public schools, I feel I am so behind in my college search!
which school is that?
@h0kulani I was debating going to homecoming last week, since I assumed my gf would want to go (and I feel like the Student Body President is obligated to go) :-/ . Then I realized I didn’t have a choice when I got into the UPenn fly-in, since I have to be at the airport by 4AM the morning after.
@Hamlon Idk if you’ve been to Reed, but I’ve heard it compared to Swarthmore fairly often. Are you applying there as well?
Anyone looking at Williams?
@kassh4
Yes, I am. Just got back from WOW.
@FreePariah Nah, I’ve heard the schools are similar academically though.
@Volunteerism Cool. I also went to WOW. I would highly recommend Willaims. It was awesome.
