High School Class of 2018

@dietcig I believe the scholarships are still there? The think about Howard is that they still link their old website for financial aid when the criteria has changed a lot. But I also found them on the new website a couple months ago but it took me forever in a day because it wasn’t under the financial aid section. They might have pulled it as well because they’re known to change the criteria every year. So I believe you’ll have to go off from the criteria that was floating around twitter for the class of 2017. I heard from their CC thread that they pulled scholarships from students because they accepted way too many students and didn’t have enough money. That plus the fact that all their freshman and sophomore dorms are basically triple dorms now turned me off from the school.

Having my ACT canceled due to Irma was a blessing and a curse. I’m slowly seeing an increase in my math score to be around a 30-31 based on extra practice. This is huge because the math is my weakest subject. Fingers crossed I get a 32 composite score.

Has anybody heard from Caltech UpClose?

Does anyone else find it funny that College Board charges you a fee to fill out the CSS Profile? Like bruh, it’s an application for FINANCIAL AID

@thenorthstar What is Caltech UpClose?

@neptuna I hate it. It’s kinda hypocritical of the College Board to make people pay a fee for a financial aid form.

Guys, I’m going to find out my first college decision on the 11th of October! I know I’m going to get in since it’s one of my safeties, but it’s crazy having just realized that the college apps process is now in full swing for me.

I just got accepted at University of New Mexico asks University of Texas at Dallas!!! They are both academic safeties but viable options due to NMF scholarships. I’m still waiting on a decision from my first choice, University of Central Florida. It’s all happening so fast guys!!! It’s kinda freaking me out… I’m excited but living across the country from home is really nerve racking!

@frazzledazzle it’s a fly-in program that I got an email about but that’s all I know lol

Do any of you guys get in trouble with parents about the colleges you’re applying to? I’m seriously considering my match/safeties, and they keep yelling about how I’m wasting all their efforts and my potential, etc (but we literally can’t afford my reaches…??).
And they seriously believe I should be going to an Ivy League bc I’m somehow unique that I don’t have any leadership (ha what?) and I’ll magically have something else that stands out. It’s frustrating when all the stats and facts are online and so obviously show that I’m not up to par with ECs, test scores, or really anything else. I’ve done my research, but when I tell them that, they get angry for not believing in them and the “stories” they’ve heard.

They’re also trying to mandate what I should write about, when I don’t have a personal connection to what they suggest at all…

@agentaquastar My parents are relatively no help at all because they don’t understand the college process. I actually want parents who can help me, but I also understand your frustration. College should ultimately be your decision, and they shouldn’t yell at you because you don’t want to go to a specific college. We’re all on the same boat, so don’t hesitate to lean on us if you need to.

My Econ teacher didn’t believe me when I said College Board is a “non-profit.” He was shocked after he looked it up and realized I was right. Gotta love CB :-q

@agentaquastar Sorry you have to go through that! I have similar frustrations with my extended family but it is still completely different since I don’t live with them. Only a few more months until we are second semester seniors…
Have your parents used the NPC for Ivies? That shut up my parents for awhile

@Iridescentgaze omg yeah now I’m remembering all of the twitter drama. It was so sad to see students freaking out about their scholarships being revoked IN JUNE! I think I’ll just be sticking to my one safety

@agentaquastar My mom and I have disagreed about some of the reach schools on my list and in the past other schools that I have considered. We’re also disagreeing with the financial stuff. She thinks that the price we’d pay/what the NPC says isn’t my business and that I shouldn’t worry about it, yet I think I have a right to know so I can make an informed decision on where to apply and, eventually, go.

@agentaquastar my daughter who is class of 2018 had a friend who just graduated. Let’s just say the girl is not typical cc student. Her mother works at Harvard. Somehow the girl believed that she was very unique because she went to a private Jewish school and her diversity would magically get her in even though her SATs were under 1000. She honestly thought that she represented diversity and that her interview would show that she was Harvard material because they would see her holistically and just know that her scores didn’t represent her (she took the SAT a few times). Her grades were a mix of As Bs and Cs with a d/f actually in a religious class. Needless to say I was not at all surprised at the rejection.

@momtogirls2 I wish my parents would realize this… They think that my grades are enough but I have absolutely no ECs or decent test scores. It’s a waste of my time and theirs, but they won’t stop yelling… :confused:

Hey Guys,
A lot’s been going on these past few days. My classes have got me so busy lately lol

At least some good things have been happening lately. Yesterday, I received a (generic) letter from my state senator yesterday for all my hard work as a NASA VESSS scholar. I definitely liked reading it, even if it was generic. It made my day. Today, I was ACCEPTED into the NASA Virginia Aerospace Science and Technology Scholars (VASTS) program! :smiley: I’m honestly so excited to begin doing this all over again with VASTS. The NASA VESSS summer academy was one of the many highlights of my summer, so going through all the nights spent working on papers and submitting them mere seconds before the deadline while getting to learn all about NASA’s history and aerospace engineering in an online college class brings back so many memories! :(( Speaking of which, in about one month, it would have been one year since I first applied to VASTS and VESSS and in less than two months, it would have been a year since my acceptance into VESSS. Boy does time fly!

Speaking of NASA, I’ve been in contact with my NASA program coordinator and have scheduled a visit to my school on October 4th to speak with the students at my school during lunch. I love getting to see her every now and then, since the last time I saw her was at CMU about a month ago. I’m also scheduling a V-NASA Club meeting on October 10th to talk with the freshmen about the NASA BLAST program for 8th and 9th graders this summer and to meet with those who attended the interest meeting last year to discuss the application process. Also, I do not want to jinx this, but there may be some potential that I could end up on the county-wide news. It’s still in the works, but if it’s going to happen, I can’t want! There might be some focus on my experience with NASA and giving back to the community and/or about me volunteering with my old middle school Robotics team and teaching a programming class there.

Other than that, we had a senior class assembly about purchasing our cap and gowns (this is really happening OMG!) What hit me was when our principal said that next time we’d all be in the auditorium together would be for our first graduation practice on May 31st! :open_mouth: We’re also having our senior class trip, the first one at our school in 20 years. It’s pretty expensive, so I don’t know if I’m gonna go. We were given the option to fundraise, but my parents don’t allow that. I also sent my SAT scores to UPitt, and I’ll get a decision by the end of next month.

Also, October 11th is my unofficial senior skip day since it’s our school’s PSAT day. We have the option of either staying home or going on a field trip to the Newsuem in DC.

And for those wondering how important this whole NASA thing is to me: everyone from the NASA VESSS Summer Academy expects, and wants a copy, of my first published book about being the launch and orbital analyst for the mission that eventually lands on Mars! I definitely want to write that book!

@ak2018 Have fun with the aerospace class! Its probably similar to the one I did last year for Washington Aerospace Scholars bc it was also NASA designed curriculm.

Just submitted my first few applications! I will need to send my transcript to those schools next week, but the applications and test scores are in. It’s a weird feeling.

Are you guys going to your school’s homecoming? Everyone’s saying that you’ve got to go during your senior year since it’s your last chance, but I’m not sure!

@h0kulani I didn’t/will not go (it’s tonight for my school). For my school, it’s sweaty/smelly and not really my venue. I’m not a fan of the music nor the way that people “dance”. I’ve been told by nearly everyone that I should go, but my closest friends and I are getting together instead to watch movies in our PJs. So much better for me in my opinion…

@h0kulani if you’re friends are all going and you’re willing to spend the money, it’s just another (but smellier and louder) place to get together. I wouldn’t go if you know you’re not into dances. You won’t be missing out on anything.
@sewin2music that’s amazing I love it.

@snowfairy137 Thanks! I’m definitely looking forward to it.

@h0kulani I can’t go because it’s pretty expensive, so I just do what I normally do on weekends.
