I finally had an idea for those “describe your community/culture” prompts! Did a stream of consciousness write in Word and will come back to it tomorrow!
anyone have their yearbook quote? I’m stuck on mine but I know I want it to be funny
@Futureanimator mine is:
“I know nothing with any certainty, but the sight of the stars makes me dream.” By Van Gogh! I just love his inspiring path to creating art, and I’ve always though of that quote as my motto ^^
We don’t get yearbook quotes!
@Futureanimator Mine will probably be “Research is what I’m doing when I don’t know what I’m doing” by Wernher von Braun. I might choose something from The Martian or Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Service, though. I have screenshots of my top choices.
Yeah, the best I have is “This is a very important chimichanga” which is something I said at work
I’m feeling really conflicted today. One of my good friends since middle school has financial documentation that doesn’t reflect his real situation – his parents don’t report their money to the government, and without going too much into the specifics of his circumstances, they effectively have no income on paper while they’re upper-middle class in reality. Because of this, he has a $0 EFC and is applying through QuestBridge to many top schools. It really upsets me to think about the financial strain college will bring for me when I’m middle class but not as wealthy as his family truly is, yet he gets to go for free. He gloated to me about cheating with someone on the ACT and getting away with it, and it turns out he got a 35, which I received as well. To the adcom, his score is going to look more impressive – this applicant with essentially no income, after all, scored extremely high despite the odds that are inherent to poverty, while my identical score seems less remarkable in comparison. They’ll never know that he cheated, or that his parents could afford a private tutor multiple times a week for at least a year… while I had to study out of a book.
I am overall a stronger student than him – my grades are significantly higher (junior year weighted GPA was ~10 points higher /100), and I work 10x harder, but it just really upsets me that he gets such a boost when he did absolutely nothing to earn it. My mom says that this is morally corrupt, and I agree, but it’s still hard to palate when he gets so many incredible advantages by lying. I’ve been trying to help him with the college process for months because he’s unwilling to simply Google things to help himself; he’s never uttered so much as a thank you. He claims to want to go to college for social justice but is pretending to be marginalized for his own personal benefit… it’s bothered me for a while, but now it makes me sick to my stomach. At this point, I don’t know if I can handle the friendship anymore.
@writergirl0316 I would not continue to be friends with this person, and I would stop helping him with college stuff. Idk what to do about the lying and cheating because I don’t know how much evidence you actually have to report him, so I personally would just hope that karma bites him in the butt.
If they really don’t show enough income, the CSS profile will expose it all. From what I’ve heard, the CSS profile goes deep into your financials. If they have a house with 0 income it’s going to look sketchy. I agree with @snowfairy137 I wouldn’t let this stop you from being friends if you enjoy his company continue hanging out with him otherwise stop.
I’d hope that such fraudulent behavior would be noticed between FAFSA/CSS/QB, but I also know that fudging financial information is not entirely rare in my school, so I’m not sure if it will be detected. With the anxiety of college apps coming up, this friendship’s a constant reminder of how unfair the process can be. @snowfairy137 @kassh4
My dad asked what my SAT score would be when he took the test (answer: who knows?). Trying to figure out though lead me into a spiral of internet research that has resulted in this great little nugget of standardized test history:
“Scoring of the 1926 SAT is done by hand; the College Board enlists about 30 Princeton and Columbia undergraduates (all men) to do the scoring. Score reports for more than 99% of test takers are mailed to colleges within about two weeks of the test day.”
So, in 1926, with hand graders, it took them 2 weeks to get scores out, yet in 2017, with robots and scantrons it takes 3+ weeks?? Good job College Board.
Hey class of 2018, I’m in the class of 2019 but am applying for early admission as a freshman to my state uni. I just submitted my admissions application and all of the pieces should be in by the end of this week. I’m homeschooled w/4.0 GPA (all A’s; also a significant number of A’s and A+'s through dual enrollment) and 1450 SAT. There’s a competitive scholarship that doesn’t require additional information (no essays, etc) with minimum requirements 1350 SAT and 3.5. Do y’all think I have a good chance at that?
I’m also applying for the full tuition + books scholarship and the full ride, but those are highly based on EC’s and I only have two (although I’m highly committed to both).
I got my ACT back! I got my goal score of 33! With a 36 in reading! I am so happy about that. My science went down like crazy though. 27 this time around when on my second try I got a 33?
I got my ACT scores, and I’m shocked. I didn’t study really until the week before the test, only took one practice test the night before and got a 28 on that. I got a 26 on the state one, was hoping for a 30 on this one, but expected a 27-28.
I got a 31… I’m ecstatic. Now I have to reevaluate my schools, I based them off of a tentative 28 lol.
First day of school review: (Yes, I know I start late, and I’m doing full time dual enrollment so these are all college classes on a college campus).
My 8 am computer science professor likes to yell. Eek. Also, I can program just fine but forgot like all the vocab from the last time I took computer science over a year ago
My physics teacher is hella old and doesn’t believe in cell phones. He has a windows 95 computer (along with newer ones lol). His tests are open book but he grades on a bell curve so that’s kinda scary cause it means competing with the rest of the class for As (this is a class that only physics majors/minors HAVE to take).
My linear algebra teacher is hella confusing and I’m sitting near the back bc the building is far away from my pervious class and I get there late. I can barely see the board.
I like my “electrical engineering for mechanical engineers” teacher. He’s new to the university but he has a lot of experence in industry and teachig and he’s funny and nice.
Argh, this is going to be an interesting quarter.
I got a 33 on my ACT! I’m officially done with standardized testing. Thank god.
I turned in my first college paper today for my intro women’s studies class. I hope it goes well. I was so nervous about it, but it wasn’t too bad, honestly. I have a vocab quiz for AP English and a quiz for my comm class tomorrow, and then a calc test on Friday. I hope it all goes well.
I’m having such a difficult time trying to find time for college applications. My schoolwork is really picking up now and I just don’t know what to do. I plan everything out, but I still can’t find time for applications. Plus, homecoming is in two weeks and my newspaper adviser wants our first issue out by then. I didn’t find out about this until Friday. I have no clue how we’re going to do this in just two weeks.
I pulled 35 on my ACT and I’m still screaming about it. I got a 31 twice. And on my SAT I got a 1430…twice. So I really don’t know what happened with my latest ACT but im so okay with it omg
Hello all. So I’m struggling in AP Microeconomics. Any advice?
@gopgal glad to hear that you did well on your tests
Hey guys. So I took Calc 1 at my local CC over the summer and I struggled and got a C. Now I’m taking Calc 2 during the fall semester while im in the fall of my senior year, and I don’t understand the material at all and my professor says you need to dedicate a ton of time to studying outside of class and I just simply don’t have the amount of time necessary to dedicate to studying for this class. I got an F on the first quiz we took, and I have a test tomorrow that I’m pretty sure I’ll fail. My question is: do you think I should drop this class with a “W” on my CC transcript? Or should I stick it out and hopefully pass with a C? Since I’m in high school and my community college transcript isn’t the main thing colleges are looking at, do you think a W would negatively affect my chances? BTW, If I drop Calc 2, I won’t get credit for Calculus in college and I’ll have to retake it. Please someone help me because I feel like I’m drowning and I’m not sure what to do. Should I drop with a W, or hope for a C with the very real chance of actually getting an F or a D?
