High School Class of 2019

Nah I was going to for NCSSM but now that I’m not applying I don’t see the point. I’m taking the PSAT though.

Aw, you’re not applying? @adiacs

@Shanban1607, my teacher also tried to scare us out of her class, but it was for Honors Chem. Who knew Honors Chem could be so hard? I’m worried now, but so far it’s my easiest class confusion

Yup, also taking the PSAT. For some reason, I’m really excited for that! And also Math Level 2 at some point this school year, maybe in June, and the SAT 2 World History test as well in June.

Already had my first anxiety attack of the year, and it’s only day one.

Oh boy

I’ve got Stromae and WolframAlpha on my phone

Living my best life~ >:D< :)>- ~O)

Taking Math 2 in November and SAT in January. Figured that I’d be more willing to study after winter break.

@OMPursuit No, even if I got accepted I wouldn’t have gone, and I wouldn’t want to go through a whiole admissions process for nothing. I really like NCSSM classes and clubs but that’s about it, I don’t want to go to a boarding school, even if it is only 20 minutes from home. I would also have to stop dancing and I love dancing and have put some much time, effort, and money into it, so yeah. Plus I love my highschool and I love and would miss the crap out of my friends so I don’t see going to NCSSM as worth it.

And my GPA and class rank would probably plummet

legit, you do you @adiacs ^^
speaking of giving up things you’ve spent time and money on: I’m quitting orchestra this year, but keeping up the violin (lessons 'n stuff). I wanna focus more on theory, building my ear, and improving my playing (instead of racing to get the newest piece down in time for the concert).
The biggest motivation behind this is Capoeira; I really love it, but the two thingies conflict! So I’m picking the martial art/dancing thing. >.>;

I’m taking the PSAT in October and Math 2 sometime afterwards. I’ll have to seriously study for Math 2 since I’m skipping precalculus. I’m going to buy a prep book and all of that stuff.

I fixed my schedule and it looks a little like this:

-Honors Physics
-AP Calculus Prep
-Honors Chemistry
-PLTW Principles of Engineering

-AP Calculus AB
-AP Psychology
-English 2 Honors
-PLTW Intro to Engineering Design

You’ll notice that I have the PLTW classes backwards lol. My counselor recommended it because she thinks that I could handle it. You know, she’s the very-pushy kind of counselor that takes alot of convincing. I kind of wanted to take Spanish to round out my schedule, but I can fit in four years of Spanish in two years  I really like it though.

AP Calculus Prep is like precalculus on steroids. We will review precalculus in like two weeks and then jump straight into the AB curriculum. We have 1.5 hour classes though, so a yearlong AB class should have us prepared very well.

Wait, if you already took Principles of Engineering 1st term/semester, then why are you taking Intro to Engineering Design after that? Did you skip IED, or do you have to take it to complete the entire PLTW pathway?

@Mathophile26 They’re pretty different classes, covering different topics. I don’t think there’s any special benefit to completing the pathway.

I think the key reason IED comes first is as introduction to PoE’s workload and mathstuffs.

PoE deals with a lot of trig, circuitry, kinematics and simple machines.

IED deals with principles and elements of design, CAD, finding areas and surface areas of weird geometric shapes, unit conversions, accuracy versus precision, simple statistics, etc… It’s like a broad-spectrum introduction to PLTW and engineering for any student, even if they don’t have an advanced academic background.

Aah, ok. Now I see. For us, IED is a prereq for PoE, but you can still skip IED with a teacher’s recommendation, so I assumed it was simply an intro class to PoE…

@Mathophile26 Yeah, it /was/ a prereq at my school, too. However, this year they’ve let a bunch of new people in!

Most of them are not strong in math or science. I doubt this’ll end well. :s

On a side note, has anyone heard of PACT? I did a few of their sample problems just now, and they were hella fun!
https://algorithmicthinking.org/
It’s held at Princeton, seems relatively(!) cheap (not including financial aid), and has the alluring (at least to me-types, lol) hook of focusing on logic and computer theory/algorithms, instead of app development.

I’m not so interested in software engineering m’self, but it’s cool enough I might apply for this summer.

Yeah, but you have to arrange your own accommodations.

@awesomepolyglot oh wait seriously? :0
darn, I missed that bit. No thanks…

I know some of the peeps on this thread are from the Pton area, tho

haha me! I’ve never heard of the program but that seems really interesting-- there’s the nassau inn right in princeton (idk if you’ve ever been there) it’s like 2 mins walking from the campus but thats pretty much it in town + im usually around

@northeastgirl24 yeah, their food is tasty! I was actually in Pton a couple days this summer (although we stayed over by P.F. Chang’s ;0).
I got some cool books from Labyrinth before being trampled in the Starbucks line.

I got a lot of promotional material from the school thanks to my excited parents, but was like ‘lool I won’t get to go here’

speaking of places I won’t go, there’s an MIT thing for interested students happening soon! My GC just gave me the letter and poster because apparently nobody else in my school is interested :7

freeee poster

haha i know how you feel .-. labyrinth is awesome though!! i spend wayy too much time there

I’M BEYOND PISSED. KERRI WALSH JENNINGS JUST GOT HER FIRST OLYMPIC LOST UGH. THEY DIDN’T DESERVE THIS. THE CROWD WAS SO RUDE AND BOOED THEM EVERY SECOND.
