High School Class of 2019

Some of those are new clubs, and Space Club hasn’t even been approved yet. None of my climbing stuff is affiliated with the school, either.

I’m doing:

  • Math Club (Yay math!)
  • Academic Decathlon (Loved this last year, and looking forward to it this year as well)
  • Key Club (Maybe… the club isn’t that great at my school)
  • CSF
  • Hopefully NHS
  • Girls in Engineering Club
  • Programming Club
  • Tutoring (Precalculus, Biology, Spanish 1)
  • Robotics (a local team)
  • AND, of course, school  Can’t forget that - it will be taking up most of my time haha

That’s about it. I might have forgotten something, but that’s the gist of it

What are people’s goals for this year?

I have about 80, but the big one is to be able to do 3 consecutive pull-ups.

I was in First in Fitness in elementary school for pull-ups. In fourth grade I could do 22 consecutive pullups, I can’t do that anymore though.

-Tutoring kids in math!
-Hopefully volunteering with the latino community
-Being a VR docent/giving a lecture on making VR games (yass) at the public library’s program
-Starting a math/computer science club with a couple other few people! It looks like it’s gonna happen… :0
-Math club at the local university! they have cool people, free pizza, and cool (so well as free) lectures!
One of the dudes there is a sophomore in university, already finished his math degree, and is just sticking around to take university competitions for medals. The best part is everyone gets my math jokes :0
-This thing called ‘math circle!’ it’s part of math club, technically worth a credit, and consists of me making lectures for highschoolers and middle-schoolers interested in math on advanced topics. The academic plus is learning how to use LATEX! It’s gonna be so much fun
-AMC 10/CLO
-Writing club at the local library!
-Capoeira! That’s a super cool thing. I do it 4-ish hours a week, but that should probably be more; it’s the only thing keeping me in shape…

I want to pass all my classes (lol, isn’t that everyone’s goal tho), improve A LOT at cello, get a 750+ on the SAT II I’m taking in November, and get out of a toxic relationship in my life.

That last one is coming along really well

I wanna make more friends, become a better writer, and qualify for AIME :0

I’m gonna take the AMC10 but I won’t score very high, LOL

@awesomepolyglot, same!

I wish my school offered the AMC, or any Science Olympiads :frowning:

Can I ask you mathy kids a question please? How much time do ya’ll have every school day for non school academics such as your AMC 10, etc.
The reason I ask, is currently D21 is spending 1.5 hours a day X5 weekly on "mom-afterschool AoPs Into to Algebra. I would like her to continue this through high school. I would guess we would have to decrease the amount of time spent of mom-afterschool work, as high school academics take more and more time. .

Do you think this is doable?

I spend about 1-3 hours after school on weekdays on ECs. It depends on what’s going on and how much homework I have.

If she wants to spend that much time on AoPS and it doesn’t cut into her homework, she should be fine.

I’m amazed how active this forum is on a Sunday…

good thing i want to go to a UC which is heavily dependent on academics (you can get it as long as you have some basic ECs) because i would have like no chance anywhere else

my ECs are pretty dull until spring because i have a ton of track-related stuff, but other than that it’s just clubs

i really want to volunteer at a hospital next year though

@VANURSEPRAC I spend a couple hours weekly on the maths, and a lot more time reading math books! I think, so long as she’s happy, she should dedicate any amount of time she wants (within reason).

On the other hand, I know can get too boxed in sometimes. If she’s that type, don’t let her forget all about friends. XD

I think it’s doable. I think it sounds fun!

Thanks @OMPursuit, I will play it by ear! She is an introvert for sure and does not like to have friends over or go to their homes. She says school gives them plenty of time together…maybe this will change in high school

@Mathophile26 and @awesomepolyglot , we all should talk about AMC ‘n stuff sometime on the groupme
Not many people I know are interested in it, so it’d be super sweet to work through problems with other people and see others’ approaches to stuff. :0

For example, I was able to take down a ICLO problem working with a classmate and it was so coool
I bet three people could do the same thing for problems 20-25 on the AMC

There’s so much probability on the AMC10, ew.

I’m in
-Mu Alpha Theta (Secratary)
-American Sign Language Club (VP)
-Science Honors Society (running for Pres)
-Captain of the Academic Team (Co-captain for Varsity; Captain for JV; I play for both)
-HOSA (running for officer)
-French Club
-German Club
-Key Club
-Psychology Club (officer)
-Latin Club
I volunteer 8-12 hours a week, and I’m going to start a program at my school where we go to underdeveloped elementary schools to tutor children for state assessments.
Varsity soccer last year so hopefully I’ll get it this year too. I’ve been keeping up because I’m on a year-round club team.
I’m also going to do track or wrestling in the Spring.
I don’t foresee much sleep in my future…

@awesomepolyglot, Ugh, the probability. Probability-type word problems (especially combinations) are so difficult for me, and they end up showing up on almost every single competitive math test I take.

@ZealousScholar, I’ll state the obvious: that’s a really, really long list. The tutoring program sounds quite interesting - good luck!
