High School Class of 2019

During my freshmen year I was in a math course math 1a/b. It is a two year program for algebra 1 and I received an A both semesters. Then the second part of the Algebra is during my sophomore and I’m scared that I’m behind. Many people in my grade are in geometry but I was recommended from middle school to be in this math sequence even though I am good at math. Do you think college will care even though I’m doing great in the class and it’s a college prep course? Btw I’m not majoring in anything that involves high level math.

Hey, I’m another class of 2019 student. Is anyone here taking the IB Diploma program next year?

@cconfusedd I am!

What HL and SL subjects are you taking?

I think I’ll take Further Mathematics, Physics, chem and Econ HL; English lang+lit SL and Spanish B SL

It’s subject to change, however. Apparently IAs are really challenging

hey class of 2019, I’m a freshman and this is my schedule for sophomore year,
Honors Trig/ Math Analysis (Precal)
AP Chemistry
Honors English 2
Band
Spanish 2 (Speakers)
Experimental Science Honors

Yo @Bobbybob444555! That’s a pretty cool schedule.
You should probably check out the class of 2020 tho, rejoin your people.

Ya I know, just bored in class.

Aren’t we all tho

Me, I’m getting ready for a chem lab. I won’t be out until 4:00… :frowning:

@cconfusedd @VaporeonKid I’m doing IB too! Here’s my schedule:
IB English HL
IB World Religions SL
IB Biology HL
French III Honors
TOK
IB History of Americas/ 20th Century Topics HL
IB Math Studies OR AP Calculus AB
Anatomy & Physioilgy Honors OR AP Calculus BC

lol it’s complicated.

Is anyone taking the PSAT tomorrow? I am, although I took it this year already. For some reason, my school signed us up twice

@cconfusedd that’s cool! I’m doing Further Math too  I thought you had to do it together with Math HL though. Further Math isn’t pretty common here — are you taking it as a school subject or self-studying for it? I’m also doing Physics HL, and apparently it’s one of the hardest courses out there! And yeah, IAs, I heard, are pretty challenging (esp. in languages/humanities!)

@adiacs Oooh cool! Your ‘blended’ AP & IB pathway sounds really nice, I wish my school offered it! World Religions is such a cool-sounding class ahh

@VaporeonKid Well, further maths is basically math HL with all options. My school will offer further maths if there are a sufficient number of students that want to take it. Other wise I’ll just take math HL with the calc option and self study for ap statistics, because calc and stats two areas that I’m interested in.

@adiacs Your choices are definitely unique and, as @VaporeonKid said, World Religions does sound interesting. A lot of people in my school take ap tests (but no courses) for subjects they couldn’t take due to the restrictions ib imposed.

@cconfusedd I believe that it isn’t ‘basically math HL’. It’s just the options; none of the core syllabus included. They expect the core syllabus to be discussed outside of class time. Plus, the syllabus does expect students taking Further Math to ‘learn’ one of the four Math HL options outside of class time, since they expect students to take Math HL along with it. Not sure how they do it at your school, but you may want to check with your school about doing that — my school does not allow students to do Further Math without Math, no matter how advanced you are, and it does make sense with the way the syllabi for the two courses are set up.

Also — why do students take AP tests without the course if they’re doing the IB with it? I thought both get similar recognition and credit.

@VaporeonKid I didn’t know that lol- my mathematics teacher told me exactly what I told you, but I should check with him once again. My current school hasn’t offered further maths before, so he might be mistaken. I really should have checked the website first, so I apologise for any confusion caused.

I meant that they take ap tests for courses that they couldn’t take in IB for whatever reason - for example, if someone wanted to take Physics and chemistry as well as computer science in IB, he/she would have to take it as a 7th subject, which would involve sitting in cs classes for 2 years and submitting projects, IAs etc thus consuming valuable time. It’s easier, therefore, to self study for the ap computer science exam. and since AP and IB have similar recognition, it wouldn’t effect them in any way. Students also take AP exams for subjects that interest them which aren’t offered by my school.

I’m really jelly of y’all taking further math haha
diophantine equations have always given me grief

@VaporeonKid Some colleges only give you credit if it was an HL class and you got a 6/7 on the IB test so sometimes it’s harder to receive credit for IB classes.

Is third quarter slump a thing? Even though my grades are in great shape, my pretty LOW workload is absolutely killing me. It’s literally the last thing I want to do rn.

@cconfusedd no worries! best to check before you regret your decision, right? Also, that makes sense with the sciences and whatnot, the IB is pretty limiting, so I imagine some students will want to do other options.

@adiacs ah I see! That makes sense, a 6/7 in a HL class is tough.

Are AP classes a lot easier to manage that people often self-study for them? I know a senior who self-studied for APs for subjects the school didn’t offer, but isn’t it a lot of hard work, especially with the IB? Are you guys planning to self-study for APs?

@OMPursuit ooh Diophantine equations is chapter in the syllabus actually! Pretty good stuff, I would say :))
