@ab2002 I’ve taken Honors English 9 and Honors English 10… that’s it. I have a high A in honors English 10 right now, but I don’t enjoy the class very much at all, which is why I’m not enthusiastic about AP Lit. But looking at College Confidential schedules, it’s hard to find a student who’s not taking either AP Lang or AP Lit, so I was thinking that might present an issue.
Remember that CC is kind of unrealistic. Not to sound snobby, but most of the kids on here are the smartest kids in the country. You don’t need to fit the mold for CC. Just look at admissions stats. Most kids on here skyrocket for the schools they’re applying to.
@ab2002 I agree. The kids on this forum are highly motivated and goal oriented for sure. Most kids know a little about the college app process but only very basic info. For example a lot of us have or are going on college tours already. When I toured Brown, they were very surprised to see a sophmore on a visit.

@collegeready33 I wouldn’t be concerned about dropping admission rates. In reality, it’s easier to get into a top college. The number of students who attend these students is growing faster than the number who want to apply to these schools. While it is harder to get into one dream school, it is easier than before to get into one of your top choices. The reason why admission rates are dropping is because colleges want to drop them so that they can rise in the rankings. The rise in the rankings attracts more donations and more qualified students who want to apply. These more qualified students then make more money and donate more money and it becomes a cycle. For example Johns Hopkins in my opinion is overrated. It’s place in the rankings is largely due to its low acceptance rates. Lower ranked schools are better schools than hopkins but are not regarded as highly because their acceptance rates are higher and they are farther down the rankings for example brown or Georgetown. Colleges are able to make it seem harder to get in because nowadays, kids are applying to more schools. Ten years ago 5 to 10 schools might be an average number of applications while there are people regularly applying to 20+ today which means they can deny the extra applications that students send just to see if they can win the lottery. In addition, colleges accept more of their students through early decision. At top colleges such as the ivies, 35-55 percent of the class is admitted early. This allows colleges to reject more people during regular decision because half of the spots are already taken since the people admitted in early decision are forced to attend the college.
PS Sorry for making this a master’s thesis, I just wanted to clear up the misconception.

@nick3162 I am not, but one of my best friends is! My dad also majored in it in college, and he is a computer programmer.
@HS student If you really do not wish to take AP Lit, it’s fine to not do it even if everyone else on CC is. There is nothing wrong with signing up for Honors English or Speech if you’re not ready for AP Lit. You can also take AP Lang next year, right? If you can, I wouldn’t stress about it too much. While it’s nice to have both Lang and Lit, one is perfectly fine. In fact, neither of them are required if you’re going into STEM, which seems to be your case. Best of luck.

Guys, these new statistics are making me nervous. These schools are cracking down more than ever. What if what is good now is “okay” when we apply? I just want to get into a top 30 school, that’s all!

@ab2002 don’t worry !! ngl what u said before is true on how CC has unrealistic student expectations – not everyone does 3281904 aps and gets 800 on every sat subject test they take and that’s perfectly fine (in fact, it’s the pecentile that matters more than the number).
selective colleges of course look for students with good grades, good standardized test scores, good participation in extracurriculars and what not, but people on here sometimes overdo it. i would say if you are very worried though, you should participate more in extracurriculars regarding your interests (very important!) and start focusing more on your studies and your passions especially – but we’re still young and that’s okay. everyone will be fine.

AP Lang
American Gov/Econ
Spanish 4 (my school doesn’t do honors foreign language)
Magnet Program: Honors PreCalc
Magnet Program: Interdisciplinary Studies 3
Magnet Program: Honors Physics
I am still unsure about my schedule because of the magnet program, my schedule is tight at my homeschool and I was wondering if I should stop Spanish and take AP Psychology next year and Student Council/Leadership or whatever the school calls it senior year. Another concern is that I am wondering if I should take AP Government in the future when they stated it will be a more hard curriculum in the future with now the highest grade being a B- with 3 hours of studying.
