So Freshmen year I took Spanish ONE and Sophomore year I took Spanish TWO; but my Sophomore year second semester I got a D+ for the class. Every other semester I did well and got a higher grade than a C. My problem is that all the colleges I’ve been looking at ‘Require’ 2 full year credits to be admitted. I now have 1.5 credits of Spanish, is there any way to still get into those colleges without taking that semester of Spanish again?
Some colleges may accept one or more of the following in lieu of repeating the second semester of Spanish 2 with a C or higher grade:
a. Spanish 3 with a C or higher grade.
b. Sufficiently high score on the SAT subject test or AP test in Spanish.
Check the college web sites; ask the college directly if you are not sure.
Okay so getting a higher score on the SAT will make colleges over look that missing half credit?
To me it seems unlikely that you would get a D in Spanish 2 and yet be good enough in Spanish to get a sufficiently high grade on a Spanish SAT test (or on any Spanish proficiency test). I suppose that you could take a practice test and find out. However, I suspect that you are going to have to retake the second semester of Spanish 2.
You might want to get tutoring in Spanish, or get some friends together once a week to have a “Spanish lunch” (where you attempt to talk Spanish for the entire lunch), or start watching TV shows and movies in Spanish. All of this can help quite a bit.
So the only way to make that credit up in a sense would be to retake the semester?
Taking a semester of Spanish at a community college would be an equivalent of 1 year at the HS level, so it might be another option.
Some colleges may accept a high enough score on the SAT *subject test in Spanish/i to cover their foreign language requirement. Check the college’s web site and/or ask directly.
