High School English Requirement

My 9th grader attends a Spanish public school, we live in Spain and he is a U.S. citizen, he takes English as a second language. He plans on attending college in the USA therefore what will fulfil the four years English requirement for college admissions? If the colleges ACT or SAT minimum averages are met by my son and maybe the TOEFL will that met the 4 year English requirement for Division 1 college admissions? Thanx for the help

Note that for most US colleges, what they put on their websites for recommended HS preparation applies to most, but not all, students. In the case of international students, the curriculum requirements of the HS trumps what a college would want.

That said, he should take English every year, if the school offers it. Regardless of the schools offerings, he has to be comfortable in English as all the college classes will be in English. In terms of TOEFL requirements, there is no common metric, but it is unlikely that he would be exempted from taking it if the college requires it simply because he is a US citizen. Living in Spain and attending HS where instruction is in Spanish (and the regional language, if applicable) will generally mean that TOEFL is needed. But you/he needs to look at each college’s requirement.

Also note that there is generally no allowance given for lower SAT/ACT scores simply for being an international student.

I understand. He already takes Spanish grammar/literature which is the region language, french and english as second languages. Do you recommend additionally taking an online high school advanced english class, which being would be accreditted and also NCAA approved courses and online academy?

He needs 4 years of English and 4 years of native language/Literature/culture. French is a nice bonus (easy subject test - cued at CEF A2).
Those are enough for both colleges and the NCAA, however he needs to start practicing for standardized testing since it’s such a different format from what he’s used to.

No, I understood that. But since you did not specify which region of Spain, I did not want to make assumptions by excluding Catalan/Galego/Euskera.

I agree with @MYOS1634 . It’s not necessary for admissions. Whether it would be beneficial to your son is a family decision.

Also, if not already, your son will need to proficient in reading English and understanding English vocabulary, including novels, textbooks, English literature…If he sees it, read it. Of all the academic skills I brought to college and standardized tests was proficiency (fluency, rate, comprehension, vocabulary and quickly shifting between and among styles such as prose, poetry, theory/orientation…
