The article says the two young men were thrown from the vehicle, which makes me wonder if they were wearing seatbelts.
The mother says that lots of kids rented sports cars, Lamborghinis and Maseratis included. I find it hard to believe any car rental company would rent expensive cars (any car) to teenagers. So how did they manage it?
Very sad no matter the circumstances. Even though the mother was defending herself and rationalizing her decision, I am inclined to believe she will suffer the rest of her life for the decision to put her teen son into that sports car.
I feel sorry for the family and the mom, but quite frankly, it showed an entire lack of sense to rent a high powered car like that for a young guy going to the prom, it is like pouring gasoline on a fire and wondering why you get burned (and I am speaking as both a car nut and as someone who once was young, believe it or not). Makes me wonder if the rental car company knew of all these exotics being rented for teenagers, the woman in question might be in for some trouble if she told the company it was for her, car rental companies, especially exotic car rentals, generally won’t even rent to someone under 25.
@Nrdsb4 Mom rented it and let the kid drive, so I wonder if she might end up being sued by the rental company.
Also, they managed to flip the car?? WOW what on earth were they doing and how fast were they going? Crashing it would make sense, but the center of gravity in a Corvette is so low that to my understanding actually managing to flip one over is really difficult.
Okay, maybe this is a weird question, but in three of the photos of the football player who was killed, he is pointing at his teeth. Is there some kind of meaning to that?
I hadn’t thought about possible legal implications of the Mom loaning that car to her son.
Sending out my thoughts and prayers for the family. I hope they can find their way through this grief.
Most of the major car rental companies, and many of the exotics will now rent to anyone 21+. I doubt the car companies care much who drives it. Whether the mom or the kid wrecked, the mom is still on the hook for the vehicle damage and loss of use.
How terrible…I didn’t think kids still drove themselves to the prom. That doesn’t happen in our area. It’s all about groups in limos , trolleys and the like.
The Miami Herald also ran a story on this and said his friend is still in critical condition with a head injury and swelling. Finger cross for this young man.
What a sad story. It shows how fast a tragedy can happen. My prayers go out to both families.
“The article says the two young men were thrown from the vehicle, which makes me wonder if they were wearing seatbelts.”
It means that they were not wearing seatbelts. What a terrible waste.
