High School reunions

My 30 yr HS reunion is this fall and there’s been a FB group trying to get everyone interested, the price pt for a northern NJ hotel buffet (cash bar) with some sort of DJ playing 80s favorites is $75/pp. I had suggested to the organizers that we hold it at the HS gym which I guess didn’t fly because people couldn’t drink but for me, I think the nostalgia of the building would have made it worth attending. I mean, a Marriott in the town over to meet people I have forgotten makes it kind of lame. Sooooo, don’t think I’m going.

Gosmom, just go and call your friends to meet at a restaurant or bar on the original reunion date. Tell them to tell others and before you know it, you’ll have an impromptu reunion without the headache of planning!

kathie,

Here’s a post of mine from a similar previous discussion. My 40th was two years ago. I’m amazed that people would complain about a catered dinner for $25! Where can you even get a catered meal for that price, which would also have to include the price of the room rental. Maybe these people would like the reunion to be held at McDonalds.

alwaysamom, Thanks for your post. I found the thread it was from and want to link it here so I can refer to the other posts there too.

I feel hesitant about suggesting too much since I don’t live close, but I am pretty good at research, so maybe I can offer my services at helping to track down people.

We had our 40th in 2010 and it was a blast. Thanks to Facebook and a bunch of us reconnecting and working on the planning, it was an entirely different experience for everyone than prior reunions.

We had so much fun that we immediately started planning our “60th birthday party” for this fall. It will be at an outdoor event facility with games and a band. We think it will be really fun. We all turn 60 in 2012.

I’m back from the 30th. It was a fun gathering and I recognized more people than I thought I would. Of course there were a few that changed a lot due to weight, so I had to do a double take, but they were still the same great people. Fortunately the organizers made name tags in large letters with our old high school yearbook picture on them.

I did make one HUGE mistake … I re- met a guy (I’ll call him John) that I had known pretty well in HS. As we did the initial greeting when he arrived, I saw that the woman behind him had the same last name, and I recognized her, but not enough apparently. I introduced myself to her and I said, 'oh, I didn’t know that you and John got married," and she say, “Oh Snowflake, you’re kidding, right? We’re twins!” And of course then I remembered that and felt like a knucklehead. She laughed if off, and continued to greet people and move through the crowd. I guess I was friends with John but not friends with his sister!

Well you can’t be blamed for not recognizing her when she looked so much YOUNGER than her brother ;)

Our HS maintains a regular FB page so people always check in on it and stay in touch. Most of the reunions are for several years at a time since by HS our classes had several ages in them and your friends could be ahead or behind you. So usually a great turnout.
At the last reunion (35th) a favorite teacher from the day (school newspaper) was invited to speak–lots of fun and great memories.

I went to my 30th high school reunion just about one year ago. Just like so many here , it was organized mostly through FB. I took my sister with me since my husband couldn’t take off work and I literally decided the night before to fly up to Mass from NJ. I only went to the informal gathering on the Friday night , but it was a weekend long event
I had a great time seeing people I lost touch with…so many of us live out of state .
I’m very glad I decided to go …I did have my doubts because our class really didn’t have a lot of comraderie

My 40th is coming up next year. I’m trying to decide whether to go. I actually had 2 high schools. One I only attended for 10th grade (North part of town), but I had gone to elementary and junior high with everyone. Then we moved away and I went to another part of town (south part of town), so I have an entirely different set of friends from that school

I have only heard from the folks from the north side as far as a reunion. Waiting to see if one materializes for the south side.

I did go to 20th for south side and enjoyed it. It was very casual though, which was perfect for us. Nothing dressy at all. outdoors at a winery. The best part was the unofficial party we had the night before with the circle of friends that were closest.
