Does anyone know how much your senior year classes weigh into admissions decisions at NU, particularly at McCormick?

I already made my schedule for next year and I had decided against taking AP Euro because I hated APUSH this year, and I wanted to focus on my math/science classes (AP Stats, AP Calc BC, AP Computer Science, AP Physics B) and my AP Lit class. Will the fact that I’m taking a super easy social studies class (plain old one semester econ, baby) hinder my chances? A teacher at my school said it could…

[Frequently asked questions, Freshman, Office of Undergraduate Admission - Northwestern University](http://www.ugadm.northwestern.edu/freshman/faq/#prep)

I was looking at that earlier, but it’s not very specific. Out of the kids that actually get in, how common is it to take a weak social studies class senior year?

I don’t think it matters that much. I didn’t have any social studies class this year besides civics (semester-long graduation requirement, if that tells you anything about how hard it is) and I got in. I took AP Euro junior year but just didn’t have any room in my schedule this year for a legit history class. As long as you’re taking other “difficult” classes, which it looks like you are, I’m sure you’ll be fine.

Honestly, just take AP Gov. Easiest class ever. A bajillion times easier than APUSH. AP Euro is actually harder than apush (considering you have to cram about 2000 years as opposed to 200). I don’t really see why you don’t want to take APGov and opt to take Econ instead. They’re probably the same in difficulty.

Regardless, if McCormick is your target, I think you’ll be fine with no social science class or with a semester of it. Admissions peeps aren’t looking for cookie cutter schedules, just difficult/challenging ones. Good Luck! =)

I was actually a little surprised by how little class schedule factored into the admission decision. I took all honors/ap classes, while a few other students were accepted at my school having done much less (like three ap/honors classes per year). They might have compensated in other ways, but it seems to me that if your counselor checks “most rigorous course load” on your counselor application, you’re fine.

I was accepted to McCormick and I had no social studies/history class at all this year. So…it can’t play that critical a role. You’ve got really advanced classes otherwise, I think you’ll be fine.

Glenny–I took AP Gov as a sophomore.
Everyone else–thanks! I feel a bit better now.
