Will apply for scholarships, will need/rely mostly on Financial aid
Honestly just love the fact it’s in the city and that there’s no real campus. I’m from a super small town so I had always dreamed of living in a big city, figured it might be a good opportunity.
I like your varied list of colleges. Are they all affordable? You have guaranteed entry and acceptances at some…but can you afford your net cost to attend? Please consider this in your list of college applications.
NYU does guarantee to meet full need for all accepted students. The school is need aware for admissions, I think. @Mwfan1921 might know for sure. If they are need aware, your level of financial need can be considered when your application for admission is considered.
San Diego State University probably needs to be removed. As an OOS student, you won’t be receiving financial aid from a CA public university.
Some of your colleges do not guarantee to meet full need.
In your case, please please find out if your net costs can be funded by your family. With the income you noted here, that might not be possible.
I mean, you know it’s a reach and you have some good other target/safeties on your list. If it’s truly your number 1 school then ED is the way to go. Good luck!
Btw: being your sibling’s caretaker after school counts as an EC.
I second this suggestion. The application deadline is a couple weeks from now so the OP should look into this immediately. Additionally I understand the application is time intensive so more reason to jump on this now.
I also agree with removing all CA publics from the list as they will not be affordable for an OOS student.
Didn’t do too good on them, took the ACT twice and got the same score, same with the SAT, just didn’t seem necessary to stress myself out and retake them when most of the schools I wanted to end up at were test optional.
I think you have a VERY good shot at USD/USF, the Jesuit colleges will hopefully make it affordable for you.
I do worry about wanting NYU just because you want to be in a big city - have you ever had a chance to visit? But you should definitely apply. Good luck!!!
Thanks, I don’t see it…and if a school doesn’t tout being need blind prominently, that often means they are need aware
NYU does meet full financial need (as they calculate it) for all admitted students, and recently implement the NYU promise which is full tuition for students (admitted to NYC campus) from families with under $100K income and typical assets.
Cabinet making is an uncommon activity that would generate a potentially very interesting essay.
That and after school care for a sibling are solid ECs (as would be a job, summer or part time.)
Do apply to the Honors college at every university you apply to, it unlocks all sorts of opportunities and scholarships.
The best financial aid comes from the colleges themselves: Definitely run the NPC on every college on your list because a lot don’t “meet need”, meaning they may accept you and then not give you enough money to attend.
(That’s the advantage with Questbridge: you’re guaranteed not just that you can attend, but the best financial aid package, with enough to cover not just tuition&fees but also food and housing, books, transportation, and a one-time stipend to buy winter clothes if you come from a warm State. No mandatory loans - though you can always take them and bank them.- It’s the real deal, nothing is better financially.)
Other colleges you could apply to:
American University, in DC would be excellent for your majors (it does not promise to meet need but folded its Frederick Douglass Scholars programs into their general financial aid/scholarship program and you’d have a decent chance.)
not in a big city but 40mn to the state capital and topnotch for Anthropology, Beloit in Wisconsin.
Macalester is located in a Midwestern metropolis and nationally known for its programs in the social sciences.
Emory, a reach for everyone, is located in Atlanta, a very dynamic city with good weather.
You’d have to demonstrate “interest” at each, Ie., create a college-dedicated email that you use to join their mailing list, then check regularly, clicking on links if interest (this will be tracked) and participating in virtual Q&As for instance.
It wasn’t prominent when D19 applied either but somewhere on their website was a note that it was need blind for domestic students but need aware for internationals, which was confirmed at the info session we attended.
Thank you! I was considering American University but I didn’t think DC was a good fit for me generally speaking. I’ve put a lot of thought into my whole college journey and the long term after college, if I’m not happy in the city I probably won’t be very happy in the school. Will definitely look into Beloit though!
