My daughter is planning to take her first semester senior year in Spain. Her high school counselor recommended that she take first semester AP Calculus this summer (June 2016) in order to stay on track with her math rigor. Does anyone know of an online AP first semester Calculus option? All the courses I found were for the year long course. Thanks!
Is there a nearby college where she can take calculus 1 in the summer?
Are you sure Spanish seniors don’t take Calculus? MANY high schools outside the US make is the default senior math class, except for students in the Languages/Letters/FineArts track.
Is she going to be joining an AB class or a BC class? If it’s a BC class the AB curriculum will cover a little over half the material.
However, the student’s Spanish language skills do need to be about at the same level as that of high school students in Spain.
Also, if the class in Spain is taught in Spanish, the student would have to learn a lot of math-specific and calculus-specific Spanish vocabulary, and then if the student takes a more advanced course in math in the United States, all the terminology would be unfamiliar.
^I don’t know that it would be that hard. I looked up via google translate all the basic calculus words integral, derivative, differential, sequence, infinity and they are all almost exactly the same in Spanish.
Lots of community colleges have online courses, although you need to go to the school for exams. Calc 1 would likely be available.
