high school transcript

Do you think that the transcript can genuinely reflect your abilities? What if your teachers are super hard markers (there’s one English teacher in our school who has not given any final marks higher than 80%, no matter how great you are)? Do you think that a person with an average of 98% is really better than someone whose average is 92%, considering different teachers have different standards? How will the admission officers be able to figure that out?

In our school, the history teachers are usually very hard markers whereas math teachers are usually more lenient. So that even though my interests is in humanities/social sciences, my math marks are way higher, which seems to indicate that I am more inclined to math. How will I explain the discrepancy? Should I ask the guidance counsellor to write an explanation for me, or is it a general trend that humanity/social science teachers are harsher markers?

Stop worrying. I’m sure this arises MANY times by other students like you. Just let the admissions officers decide.

A 98 is only different than a 92 if you have and A/A- system. If not, then they’re both an A. Most transcripts don’t show numerical grades if you’re on the 4.0 scale.

History is hard in that even if you memorize and know everything, you have to write well to score points.

I don’t think they are… However, colleges can’t look at how hard a teacher is and how the rest of your class did so it’s best to just do as best as you can. Also, you can bring this up at an interview or even write your college essay about how you have never worked so hard to get a C+ or a B in your life.
