High School Tutor

Can someone explain to me the steps of becoming a high school tutor? I’m going into my sophomore year of high school, but I really want to be a tutor for middle schoolers. Can someone help me out?

Specifically science and history courses.

before i make any serious plan or decision, i usually refer to the 6 W’s (everything in parentheses is referring to your situation):

who (target audience - middle schoolers)
what (subject coverage - science + history - maybe music if you play an instrument? foreign language?)
when (what time do you have available to tutor?)
where (your house or your client’s? or maybe the library?)
why (don’t know what to put here… money???)
how (how will you advertise your services/get your name out?)

i think once you figure all that out then you should be set. i think the only trouble you should have is getting the word out; my suggestions:

have flyers available in areas in the middle school (with their permission, of course; front office and grade level/counselor office is ideal because it’s mom/dad hub)
if your parents have any friends that have middle school students then they might be a great aid
have flyers in public places (cafes, libraries, etc) that have those tear-able cut outs with the phone number (i’m poor in descriptions… here is an example)

i hope this helps

You just need to market yourself as suggested above. Maybe your parents can help. Where I live, we have a neighborhood facebook page where people offer babysitting, tutoring services, etc.

My daughter reached out to a few of her high school teachers letting them know that she was available to tutor, and they forwarded that to the local middle school. When the requests for her services came in, they were not always in the subject she had originally thought she wanted to offer tutoring services for, but she was strong in the other area, so she went with it.

Once the middle school community knows you are out there, you will really need to implement the framework above for determining why you are doing what you are doing, and what your availability is.

As volunteer? Your school probably already has high schoolers doing this as regular service in NHS or key club or similar, if not, set one up!

You have to be good in the subjects you’ll tutor and know how to encourage younger kids. I don’t see where you’ve mentioned this.

If this is about volunteering, consider working with disadvantaged kids who could use a mentor.

Public libraries and local colleges may have opportunities for volunteer tutoring. If you don’t have any experience, that would be a good place to start.
