High school, vocational training, and liberal arts

I’ve been thinking about vocational training vs. a liberal arts education. The advantages of a liberal arts education (my googling around has told me) include things like:

*teaching you how to think
*teaching you how to learn
*giving you a working knowledge of the world around you
*

That’s all well and good - but if that’s what the point of LACs are, what do we go through high school for?

Also, is the world ever really understandable anyway? Brilliant scholars have spent their whole lives trying to really understand the world. Not that we shouldn’t try, but how much are we really going to learn in one or two semesters of Philosophy class in a liberal arts program?

Thanks for regarding my skeptical questions : )
