I have a friend who applied to Rice as a RD. She’s someone who is easily stressed out and freaks out a lot (probably due to the fact she does a million things at one time). Anyways her “freaking out” times are well known and documented in our school and one her teachers told her that he hopes that Rice does not accept her because he knows about Rice’s suicidal rates due to a lot of stress. Personally I’m the kind of person who takes in stess very well because i was well prepared in my high school years due to a rigorous curriculum. However, if Rice has high suicidal rates in such a small school, it’s detering people from my school from attending or applying to Rice. Because, no matter how good it is, no one wants to go to a school with that kind of atmosphere. PERSONALLY, I think the teacher is just being a jackass (he’s well known for his blatant jackass quality) but is it true? jw

no, it’s not.

All this information is strictly hearsay, is it not? Ask for evidence before believing a claim to be true.

I agree with nspeds, and I have never heard of any high suicidal rate. Besides, stress varies from person to person. For someone who “freaks out a lot,” it won’t matter where she goes (Rice or not), she’ll need to learn how to cope with her stress moments.

Not only have i never heard of that, i never heard of any rice student comitting suicide. I’m sure it happens, but it’s very, very rare.

Rice has a lot of support networks in place, including the res. college system, with Masters living right next door, and older students and faculty mentors to provide guidance. The teen and early-20’s years are difficult for some people, especially those who are perfectionists and stress out easily. Many colleges, (Grinnell, NYU come to mind in recent news) have incidences of suicide and “copy-cat” suicides. I haven’t actually ever heard of any suicides at Rice, but I’m sure that every college has been touched by this at some time or other.

And the atmosphere at Rice seems pretty healthy and positive and fun and friendly from what my DD tells me.

Ditto what Jenskate and Anxiousmom said. All colleges are sensitive to the student stress/safety factor and promote their student counseling services. Rice is not a cutthroat environment. If your friend “freaks out”, she’ll probably do it no matter where she goes. I hope she gets connected with the support sevices available to her.
PS-- be sure to tell this teacher to stop spreading false rumors.

the population of most college campus isn’t large enough to develop any accurate suicide trends…

a rice student told me of a girl she knew that hated rice and after one year came home bulimic and self mutilated herself. but that is ONE person, and she proabably would of done it at any college she went to.

danng self mutilation… but rice is so BEAUTIFUL and the weather is so nice… well~ at least the sun’s out most of the time… but good weather always makes me happy haha

bump…

I live in Houston and probably would have heard mention of sucide if it was common… I was told by one student that there have been no alcohol related deaths on campus, always a good thing with so much in the news.

When I visited Rice (my dad lives in Houston and actually thought I would have a chance at getting in haha)…I talked to a few students there. They were very relaxed. I asked one of them about there stats, and she modestly said she got in because of her essay. I talked to another guy, and he said he transferred from MIT after a year to Rice because MIT was too cuthroat. He went to describe how students in MIT didn’t care about eachother. So, I’m assuming Rice must be much less stressful than the other top universities.

hey guys…i read somewhere that ppl who do commit suicide are like bipolar…so yeah. i really dont think ppl commit suicide because of the school or whatever…i think it is because they are bipolar…

OWLgirl…woot woot!

Not all people who commit suicide are bipolar. Some are simply depressed, and depression can be caused by many things. A really stressful school definitely wouldn’t help.

true…

thats just what i’ve read…

I go to my boyfriend’s house today and mention that I am considering going to Rice. His sister (who goes to UT:Austin) replies, “doesn’t Rice have a really high suicide rate?” and then their dad says he heard the same thing. Yet they dont’ know if it’s true at all.

I really think it’s just a myth, one that many selective schools seem to have to deal with. If it’s a major concern of yours, call the Rice Counseling center and ask them about it.

My physics teacher told me that two people committed suicide when she was at Rice. That was over six years ago so take it with a grain of salt.

I’ve been at Rice for three years, and I have never heard of any suicides. When I was at Vanderbilt for undergrad, however, there were 2 suicides. Vanderbilt faculty is exceptional and extremely supportive. Rice faculty is alot more into their own research, and some of the most distinguished faculty members could really care less for you.
