Higher education lobbyists and tax reform

In addition to the Realtors’ and Homebuilders’ lobbyists, the Higher Education lobbyists are currently moving against this proposed tax reform legislation. The HE lobbyists oppose a provision to tax the largest endowments at the wealthiest colleges at 1.4%. The lobbyists are also against a provision to begin taxing the “tuition reduction” benefit that many higher education employees currently enjoy. At many schools, the tuition reduction benefit can amount to a multi-hundred thousand dollar tax free benefit for these employees. There are also important changes to the student loan interest deduction and the various college savings plans. Please read the proposed legislation and let your legislator know your thoughts. The special interest lobbyists should not be in charge of our tax reform.
