We also just saw the Lunchbox & my younger D & I totally geeked out over LOTR.
( not so much the Hobbit)
Many movies that are heavily advertised, I know I am not going to like that much so I stay away or watch them on Netflix, where I just stop paying attention.
Bridesmaids for example was supposed to be so hilarious, but I thought it was an SNL skit that went on too long.
Wes Anderson also doesnt do it for me, although I did like The Squid & the Whale.
Like Pulp Fiction, but don’t like Tarentino and haven’t seen anything else.
But the Coen brothers, I like. Go figure.

Going to see Lunchbox on Fri.
“Highly rated” is why I scour rottentomatoes- to see the range of reviews and criticisms from the professionals. Most popular movies- well, popular among whom?

I am glad that “Pulp Fiction” is mentioned. This is the classic for me, the one that I have actually tried, but no way could finish, I just could not figure out the purpose of this movie at all and when they start shooting, I fall asleep which happens to me every time after about 1 min. of shooting in any movie…boring beyond, but a very good sleeping pill without side effects.
Popular movies, I guess are popular among critics. Some are popular among other members of my family. But I cannot watch most of TV anyway, I call it “scream, then ha-ha-ha in backgound”. “Scream” is because most personalities on TV (including news) do not talk any more, they scream, and then you have to listen to ha-ha-ha, why I would waste a precious time on this? Well, in most movies, people also scream instead of talking. Somehow in “The Blind Side” they found the way to actually talk, very re-freshing.

Did not care for any of the LOTR movies or Harry Potter either. Gravity was fine to watch once, ditto Titanic. Did not get Cloud Atlas appeal. Oh, and speaking of highly acclaimed directors, I am not a fan of Fellini, Tarantino and Tarkovsky. Moonrise Kingdom was wonderful.

Moulin Rouge. Could not get through it and could not understand the hype around it. Yuck!

I can’t stand Will Ferrell, and have only watched one movie of his all the way through. (The utterly disastrous Bewitched.) I loved the LOTR trilogy, and Peter Jackson’s King Kong. I detest Quentin Tarantino. I’ve seen Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, and while there are good performances and clever bits, ultimately he produces pandering trash, IMHO. I attempted to watch Inglorious Basterds and had to turn it off quite early on.

Love the Coen brothers. Love Bill Forsythe: Local Hero, anyone?

The Wolf of Wall Street. Out of Africa. Both Sherlock movies with RDJ. Lon Survivor was a disappointment after reading the book. Lars and the Real Girl is one of my all-time faves.

I also don’t like any Quentin Tarantino movies (hated Pulp Fiction in particular), but love all of the Coen Brothers’ movies (especially Fargo). I’ve also never gotten what was so great about Citizen Kane. Only movies I’ve rewatched multiple times (like at least once a year) are The Ten Commandments and The Sound of Music, but generally I hardly ever rewatch movies.

Agree with all of the above.

D2 just took a class which had a section on Bob Fosse. I just bought the All That Jazz DVD on Amazon and sent it to her. I’m interested in her opinion (I haven’t seen it since I saw it in the theater when it came out).

Consolation, Local Hero is in my all-time top 5.

I fall asleep during just about every Western I watch. Seriously, I’ve tried to watch the original True Grit three times and have fallen asleep each time. Ditto 3:10 to Yuma and Young Guns.

All That Jazz is the only movie I happily slept through in a theater without feeling the least bit ashamed. I truly thought it was unwatchable.

Favorite movies most people hated or never saw–Shakes the Clown, Sterile Cuckoo, Bobbie Jo and the Outlaw, Black Widow, Joyride (1977), A Boy and His Dog.

I went to an afternoon showing of The Chef, starring actor/director John Favreau and an ensemble cast.

Word to the wise: don’t go to this movie on an empty stomach. The images will make you salivate even if you just had a big meal; it could drive you crazy if you are already hungry.

I thought WALL-E was the most boring movie ever. My family thought I was crazy- they loved it. Bestfriendsgirl- I LOVE a good western but the problem is there are very few good western. I didn’t like any of the ones you mentioned either, but I did like the new True Grit. My all-time favorite is Silverado but I haven’t seen a really good one since then.

I second your little review of WallE. Mr B was not impressed either. We both thought that Frozen was excellent, however, the songs were somewhat meh.

My husband and I love a good western movie and we don’t mind watching Clint Eastwood more than once. I like to see more of his old movies when I retire.

I hated Napoleon Dynamite. Too much like my real high school, couldn’t make it past the first 20 minutes. Ick.

Django Unchained…hands down , one of the absolute worst movies I have ever seen. How ever many minutes it was long was how many minutes of my life I will never get back for wasting my time on that garbage.

After reading through this thread, I have to chime in …Out of Africa, Lincoln were high on my list of films that I hated. I also have never seen any Harry Potter flicks, Lord of the Rings, barely the first of the Star Wars , Wag the Dog… I fell asleep in the theater. I haven’t enjoyed an animated movie in quite some time, but I did love Frozen :)…Nebraska…snore
