Hipster schools by the beach that have a strong journalism program

I want a liberal vibe school with people who aren’t all about sororities. It would be great if it were by a beach. I want more so strong academics than party school, but nothing impossible to get into. I have a 3.3 GPA 2100 SAT score and a lot of extracurriculars. I am super liberal, equal rights, love and be loved, type of person. I also would like the campus to be environmentally responsible.

Are your parents able to pay the full cost to indulge you at such a school?

New College of Florida?

What state are you in?

lol

Wow, that’s super helpful, lostaccount.

With your stats you can probably get a nice merit scholarship from Eckerd or New College of FL. U. of Miami has excellent Journalism and Communications programs, but it is fiendishly expensive and merit packages might be a little less certain. USC is within reach academically, but you are unlikely to get much aid at all if that’s an issue. Miami and USC both have heavy frat/jock scenes, but also have hipster elements as well. UCSD, UCSB, and UCSC might all suit you, if you can afford out-of-state tuition at a UC.
My son is at New College. It is decidedly hipster/nerd-friendly, and has a gorgeous bayfront location. It is not specifically known for Journalism, but the Independent Study aspects would certainly allow you to design curricula and internships to support that goal.

UCSB does not have a journalism major. They have a communications major, which is not the same thing. The student newspaper, however, is well-regarded (but not associated with the communications department).

Lol, it was a funny post, but it is cool that you know exactly what you want. Now just prioritize.
If the best journalism department is most important to you start there:

If hipster is most important start there:

Liberal:

From there narrow your selections using your second criteria. etc.

What is your home state and your budget? What are your parents willing to pay and will you qualify for need-based aid?

I’min MD but I’ll go anywhere in the US

As strange as it sounds, how about Northwestern?

What’s your budget?

Assume budget and distance are not factors

^^^ Northwestern is not a realistic shot for admission.

If proximity to the ocean isn’t a deal breaker, here are some suggestions:
-University of Oregon
-Emerson College
-University of Montana
-Ithaca College
-Western Washington University

Eckerd sounds perfect for you. It has a private beach, in Florida. Your stats should get you in. It’s a small LAC though, and you haven’t given us an idea of what size you are looking for. Coastal Carolina might work too. Gotta say though, you are limiting yourself by wanting to be near the beach. Expand your geographic constraints. You have MUCH more choice. And if you do expand your horizons, look inot Clark University.

Definitely look at Emerson. Artsy hipster, near Boston. Not that far from beach.

I think that Loyola Marymount has decent Journalism/Communications programs. Even though it is a Catholic college, its strong Film and Theater programs guarantee that there will be plenty of hipsters. It is located very near Pacific in L.A.
