I’ve heard stereotypes of both these types of people existing at the University of Chicago. Is either more true than the other?

Neither one is completely true… read the thread on UofC girls.

There aren’t as many hipsters as extreme introverted nerds, I was actually surprised I thought there would be more hipsters

I’m not even sure what hipsters are supposed to look like. Two legs? Four legs?

You can find introverted nerds easily, if you look, but in general they’re not even out in public that much. You might see a lot of extroverted nerds, though.

It wasn’t purely an appearance question.

I’m fine with that.

UChicago is definitely hipstery, you’ll find a lot more people smoking cigarettes and listening to Arcade Fire here than at other schools I’ve been to.

Here we go: Killing multiple birds with a single url. Proof of hipster existence at the University of Chicago. Anecdotal evidence of what hipsters look like. Anecdotal evidence of what women at the University of Chicago look like (actually, only one of them, and she’ll probably be gone before any of you '15s show up, but still . . . .)

And, v3rt, the last time hipsters listened to the Arcade Fire, it was 2006. Maybe. My daughter’s hippest friends had a formal Removal From The iPod for Arcade Fire in 2004 because they had gotten too mainstream. I was discussing their 2010 album with my kids. When I said I still liked them and listened to them, they said, “That’s because you are old.”

I gave up being a hipster when I came to UChicago. They’re just too damn good here.

Extremely extroverted nerdiness, on the other hand . . . :)

Ha. ha. ha.

Really, though, can anyone tell me if either is more prevalent than the other? I don’t care that it will be a subjective answer.

I feel like that would be really hard to tell as they don’t hang out with one another at all nor do they (typically) take the same classes. There are a healthy bunch of both depending on your definition with hipsters having a potentially slightly higher percentage (but maybe that is because I’m from the Northwest; and thus, must have my (healthy) dosage of tea/coffee from coffee shops ;-)).

The thing with UChicago hipsters is that they’re hip about everything. The CS department prides itself on teaching obscure languages. The Jazz Dance class dances to indie rock. Irony is practically the common language of the campus.

It’s pretty chill :)
