Historic Preservation?

I’m not even sure what I’m going to major in yet, but I thought I should get some answers to questions I have about architecture/historic preservation. I would be coming from a non-architecture background. I was looking into the Columbia masters program in historic preservation, but had heard from others that h.p. is more like a sub-topic for architecture and that it’s hard and/or impractical to study separate from architecture. Anyone have any input?

I’m interested in majoring in American Studies, Art History, Marketing, Sociology, or History…somehow combining a few of these topics in double major, etc. and am not even sure if my school has the necessary background courses for me to even THINK about MArch. Would I need to have really impressive math GRE’s and math courses?

I knew someone who got both a historic preservation masters and an architecture masters at Columbia at the same time. I don’t know what the background of the other people in the hist. preerv. program were. I took a couple of course while I was there -one covered how materials age and fail the other was a little more philosphical - more about the history and what is worth saving and why. Your proposed majors all sound fine for a future architect or historic preservationist. I don’t know how selective Columbia is these days. When I was on the admissions committee a million years ago. I’d say GREs in the 600s and a B or better in calculus would get you consideration.
