History 158C

What is this class like? Recommendable? I’m going to be a sophomore this semester and I heard that upper division history classes mean A LOT of reading, but is it worth it for this class?

This class focuses heavily on Nazi Germany and the Soviet Bloc countries post WW2. It’s a very large upper division class (250 students) as it is the go-to course for a number of majors. There is quite a lot of reading, mostly novels/plays (White Teeth / Zadie Smith, Rock and Roll / Tom Stoppard, etc.), and a number of movies as well (Sophie Scholl, Battle of Algiers). Lectures can be monotonous at times. Get the deaf notes to supplement gaps because you may very well occasionally fall asleep.
