History at Duke

Is history at Duke particularly hard? I am interested in Pre-Med and will major in either biology or psychology and I plan to minor in History. Will it be hard to maintain a nice GPA? How is the history department at duke?

Minors in History seem to be very common and aren’t all that rigorous. I’m a History minor and a chemistry major. I took a couple of History classes that filled Trinity requirements, and I realized that I was not all that far off from a minor anyway so I ended up taking a couple more. All you need is 5 classes (3 above the 100 level). Let’s put it this way, I’m capping off my History minor right now with Baseball in a Global Perspective (love that class). I think a History major would be better suited to comment on the History department. Frankly, I’ve had some great professors and some not so great professors. As for GPA, History course grades were a nice break from science course grades (a lot easier to get A’s from my experience).

I am not a pre-med/science person so it’s hard to compare, but I was impressed with my one history course. There was a lot of reading and writing but the professor was very enthusiastic and presented the topic well. Also the TA’s for the discussion section were also very professional and knowledgable. The grading was fair (I didn’t think it was very generous or harsh) so I would recommend at least trying history if you have an interest. Psych is also a very good department here from my experience, their professors tend to be the most engaging with interesting lectures.
