History or counseling? sorry so long

I am a year away from finishing a bachelor’s in couneling (6 classes + internship, actually will be 3 semesters). However, I do NOT like this major, and have no intention of ever becoming a counselor.

My passion is history. Any history, but mainly american history, and especially the civil war. I love to read, write, and do research. I am very good with foreign languages, and fascinated by different cultures. Also love to travel. I would love to get paid to spend all day in a musty library going through old documents.

However, I just turned 30. At this point, would it be worth to change my major to history? Or should I just stay with counseling. I know I can find jobs in this, history not so sure about. I do know that all I read is mainly historical nonfiction. If I am interested in a specific topic, I will research it for fun to see what I can find out.

I am also not sure if teaching is for me. I think I would like it, but that is up in the air.

Thank you!

You would be hard-pressed to find a career that pays you to do this. Remember, too, that your major doesn’t need to correlate with your career.

You should think about obtaining your masters in library science and specializing in archives if you like going through old documents.
