Still waiting to here from HKUSTā¦

If you go to HKUST, make sure to create a report ( ) on the residences.

Still waiting to here from HKUSTā¦

@Sarthak: Haha! You must have even shortlisted the clubs/sports activities that youāre going to join. Youāre that desperate for UST. ROFL. Well, Iām totally flat over HKUST campus and no doubt for Engg, it is one of the best schools in Asia and better than HKU. But, HKU is still awesome. =P
Where have I been?! Dude, you donāt even freaking come on Gmail man! And once again reminding you, e-mail me everything about the HKUST visit and donāt forget to ask them my question XD And like Rebecca said, check out the dorms too! :P

@Rebecca: Same here. Still havenāt heard anything. Oh btw, since youāre from Canada, do you have any idea when/how soon Canadian Unis give out decisions to international students? I applied to UBC, McGill and UToronto =D
Btw, itās quite eccentric. You completed your interview long time back and still havenāt heard back from 'em. But I hope we both will hear soon =D
Have you also completely zeroed in on HKUST like Sarthak?

Nah. I have no idea for international students. Sorry.
Iām not completely zeroed in. Well I really want to go I guess but until I hear a yes or no I can just wait.

What about you? Whatās your first choice?

I just got an e-mail from 'em regarding a phone interview this Friday. Eek.
And somehow, it had reached my junk folder! Even Iām not dead sure if HKUST is my first preference. I applied to a few great US schools too but they will be my last resort due to the finances because I havenāt applied for aid! Wanted to keep 'em as safeties Actually, I like UBC too and Iāll really consider it if I get good scholarship. UToronto and McGill donāt even offer generous aid to internationals.
But Sarthak keeps scaring me about how cold Canada is. And then again, how awesome HK will be as compared to Canada. So basically Iām all confused.
And for me NUS will be a long shot. I may be able to get into NTU if I work hard and score well in my exams this year. But thereās a HUGE difference b/w HKUST and NTU in terms of rankings so if you just look from that perspective and consider the fact that SG is boring, HKUST is a better bet.

Whatever, I just want to get over with all of this asap. XP

Hey Systemfailiureā¦I applied long ago in Sept. and for mech eng. Do you know if the eng course at HKUST has a general engineering part in it? Or does it start directly with mech eng?
Btw, what do you think is the best among HKUST, HKU, NUS, NTU and Imperial for Eng, considering evrythingā¦

Canada is indeed cold. Well it depends on where youāre from? And if youāve ever travelled to somewhere cold? I really hate winter and the cold so Iām really hoping Hong Kong works out.

Good luck on your interview! Tell me how it goes.

My sister wants to go to UBC next year for her masters degree and visited the campus last summer. She said it was really beautiful. And I have one friend there studying music.

@system failure-good luck with your interview.make sure you have your personal statements in handā¦
@ Rebecca-fret not, they are taking time probably coz you applied for the swire thing!!!
@lordXXX-Imperial by far is the bestā¦(i am from England, not being biased thoughā¦:))

rebecca: Sure! Iāll take a good look at the housing :)

System Failure: I hate to disclose it but I do have some idea about the clubs/activities that I would be joining! haha⦠I sure will email you the detailed visit review!
Good Luck with the interview! Let me know if you need āAnyā help! Just bullet point your academic, ex-curricular achievements and also some instances/stories that will help them show the exposure you have had, and keep it with you during the interview⦠Also be sure about why you wanna join the course you are doing and how and when you realized thatā¦

@LordXXX: Oh September! You applied pretty early huh! Since, engg in HK is of 3 years duration, Iām guessing theyāll directly start with the core cirrculum of Mech engg. Some international students have to take extra courses depending upon their academic background. But, in short, the first year of engineering is not common to all engg students like the other universities around the world. But Iāve heard HK is shifting to four year undergrad system in 2012. Iām pretty sure theyāll have the general engg thing in the first year then!

Considering everything I would rank those unis as follows:
Imperial>NUS>HKUST=NTU>HKU [For Engg obviously]
But you can strike off Imperial completely if finances are an issue!

@Rebecca: Iām from India. New Delhi to be precise where itās really cold in winters and really hot in summers. But Iām not accustomed to temperatures below 5 deg C. And yes I aint too fond of winters either. This probably gives Canada a back seat. Even Iāve heard that the UBC campus is really pretty! Hope HK works out for you. I think Itāll. And yeah, Iāll let ya know about the interview! How exactly was your interview? Temme a bit about it in detail! ^_^

@Anand: Thanks yaa. LOL. Iāll go through my personal statement and stuff again 'coz the interviewer will be knowing the minutest of the details! =]

@Sarthak: Yeah well, I wrote pretty much everything in my personal statement; why I want to study my preferred subject, why HKUST and HK, etc! :]

I have received an phone interview email from HKUST today and its goin to be held on 4th Feb.I heard that 2 weeks after the interview i can come to know whether i have been accepted or not. Is it true?

If i have been called for phone interview does it mean that i have good chances for admissionā¦

aman: It is not necessary that they tell you two weeks after the phone interview whether you are in or not, but yes if they say so then definitely that should be it!
Basically, while reading your applications you are set into groups of three, one being the direct acceptance pool, one the further analysis pool, and one the potentially unqualified poolā¦
If you are put into the second group then they would look for additional info like more test scores, or interviews⦠Getting into either group depends on a VAST number of factors including the following (listed randomly):
School reputation and history as related to the University and globally, Standardized testing scores (if reported), School GPA, extra-curricular activities, leadership positions/offices held, et ceteraā¦

Now getting an interview is ācertainlyā a good thing cause then you can be sure they like but just needed some more information on you, but the risky side is now you are competing with others offered that privilege, if you may, for a fixed number of placesā¦
But do keep in mind, I could be wrong!!

Hope the process summary helps!!

@sarthak-hey ,i read on previous posts that you are gonna visit USTā¦
plz find out for me how active the students clubs are and how vibrant student life is(socialising ,recreation etc)
and also if they have a cricket teamā¦lol(i doubt it):D

@aman-congrats man.its a good thingā¦It means that they like what they have seen of your applicationā¦Impress them in your interview and you ll be fine!!

Thanks sarthakā¦!!

I hope the interview goes wellā¦!!I have good scores in class 10 and good position in schools and many extra curricular activitiesā¦!! Is the interview tuffā¦!!

Did u get a phone interview call?

@anand:

when should i expect to hear from them if i have been accepted or not after the phone interview?

@aman-i have no clueā¦i havenāt had mine yetā¦I applied pretty late
It all depends on how competitive the applications areā¦

Anand: The social life is quite vibrant, it being Hong Kong!! But yes the course is very hectic ! And yes they do have a cricket club!! They have Loads of sports in HKUST and fun activities! But no Greek Life like US!

Aman: I did not get a phone interview, they selected me on the basis of my application⦠And donāt worry if you do have good grades and lots of activities, then there is nothing to worry about! Just relax and talk confidently :)

Thanks for explaining that to me, system failure! Yeah, Imperial is way expensive than NUS or HKUSTā¦so I have to choose between NUS and HKUST.
Good luck on your interview! Its not that hardā¦for me it was only about 5-6 minsā¦they just asked the normal interview questions.
You are lucky they told you about the interview beforehand. For me they just called me up and said lets have an interview now!

@Sarthak:I hear you are going to visit HKUSTā¦could you please post your experience at HKUST once you get back?

So who from here is definitely going to HKUST in fall 2010?

LordXXX: Sure iāll post my experience after I get back from HKUST!

Seems that a lot of Chinese applicants applied to HKUST this year.
