Anyone ever realized that the College Confidential userbase is overwhelmingly upper/upper-middle class, are mostly of White and Asian race, and that even many/most of the URMs are also upper/upper-middle class?

Nah, I never really paid much attention.

Yes, and unsurprisingly - you would expect individuals of these social classes to be better aware of the resources available to them.

Not all of us…

Yes, that’s why CCers are the way they are.

Ok, but you’re still in an upper-middle class town.

^^ Yeah, but I grew up in Inkster/Wayne. [Very low class].

We are FAR from upper-middle class. Neither of my parents have work and we’re paying the rent because my grandpa is helping us.

Ahh…Inkster. I’m sure you know the origins of its name.

It’s named after a Scottish man (ironically) and Malcolm X used to live there :].

Also Tyrone Wheatley (who shares my birthday) was born there. [Football player].

Really? I heard that Henry Ford named it that because of all the African-American Ford workers there.

^^ Rumor. Haha.

We were known as Inks and InkTown though because of that. Also Crooked I because I think we had the worst crime rate in the state.

Well, CC-ers are generally obsessed with schools that are usually butt expensive… and they can afford to spend ages on websites like these. ;)

Cheers,
Alex

Yup, I noticed that…

I like being different ![]()
(middle class, black, female)

Hn. Well, as an upper middle class URM, I suppose I can’t really say too much…except Hi, guys, here I am! XP

But seriously - I think that while there is a very prominent image of that sort of composition for CC, it has a lot to do with which members are the most vocal. That is, the upper middle class white/asian folks are a lot louder than everyone else, or at least broadcast their race more readily. However, I also think that there is definitely a section of CC that does NOT fall into that category, though we may not “see” them as much.

Does that even make sense? I have no idea…@_@

^^ Really? I think in college admissions whites / asians play down their race whereas African-Americans and other URMS tend to scream it more.

That’s only on CC ^

I’m a lower class URM, and before I came here I never knew that “URMs” had advantages in college admission.

I was also surprised at how much we get flamed on this board.

Some posts in this thread are dripping with judgment.

I’m a strictly middle class 1/2 asian 1/2 white person, so I guess I’m kinda stereotypical to be on this forum. I do not understand all the bitterness towards URMs, though. “They are so underqualified but get into HYPS!!! while all my asian/white friends get rejected” blah blah blah. Whatever, get over yourselves. People like talking about races in general because it’s interesting to see all the stereotypes that are out there. But in the end, it’s not worth dwelling on- I see posts from all sorts of people on CC, and I honestly don’t believe our “racial differences” are as big a deal as people make it out to be.

I think we can all agree that when we speak about soemthing in general, we’re not referring to everybody.

It just gets old having to clarify that over and over again, so I’ll just say it for everyone now.
