I go to Loyola MD right now, but I don’t like it, so I’m going to go home and spend my second semester back home on Long Island where I live, so that I can transfer somewhere better for my sophomore year. But I don’t know if I should go to Hofstra, Adelphi or Stony Brook. I would probably be a resident because I don’t have a car, and I’m an English and philosophy major. I guess what I’m asking is which one would you spend a semester at (assuming you know the schools)? Also, I don’t drink and am not into partying at all.

Marist College (NY) welcomes transfer students & is highly regarded.
Why not take a look, if you are sure that you will not change your mind about Loyola MD?

Marist is not a Catholic school.

What does it matter if you’re only going to be there one semester? I’d say whatever is cheapest.

SLUMOM–

I was actually accepted to Marist last spring. I didn’t like it though.

annasdad--

I don’t mean to sound snobby, but money is not an issue for me. And I know it sounds weird to stress over which college to go to if I’m only spending a semester, but I guess I just want to make the most of my second half of freshman year since I feel like my first half is wasted due to choosing the wrong college.

You ought to give it a little more time, join a couple of clubs, maybe meet some non-drinking kids, you might change your mind.

can you tell us what you don’t like about Loyola? Right now, it is one of my top choices (i’m also from LI)

I just can’t stay here. I can’t.

And SLUMOM-- I’m leaving Loyola because the whole school is a joke. If you could take the biggest jerk and brattiest girl from every high school in the US and send them all to one college, then that’s Loyola MD. Steer clear of this Catholic hell-hole.

Whoops, I meant tellch00, not SLUMOM.

If you could take the biggest jerk and brattiest girl from every high school in the US and send them all to one college, then that’s Loyola MD.

Well, my daughter goes to Loyola, and she was homecoming queen.

^^^ just kidding, in case there’s any doubt

Stony Brook, Hofstra, Adelphi. Not only is Stony Brook much better than the other two, it costs DI less.

First, I agree that Stony Brook is the most prestigious school of the three – but from what I know that school’s strength is in the sciences. I’d do some digging and see which has the best programs/classes in your area of interest. You also need to find out which school will have housing available mid-year. My S is very happy a Fordham but housing may be a problem there.
Second, as a mom, I will tell you to try to make the best of your time at Loyola, even if you are there for just one semester. You probably have only been at school for a couple of weeks. You clearly don’t relate to the typical student, but look for activities/clubs that will help you make the semester a worthwhile experience.
Good Luck

happy1-- I got into Fordham last fall, and every day I regret not going there. I wish I could go back in time and choose that school instead. Oh, well. I think my only option is to finish the semester here, transfer home probably to Hofstra, and then transfer somewhere better for sophomore year.

I would suggest getting in touch with Fordham admissions, letting them know you regret not choosing the school, and asking if they might have space (and housing) for you in the spring semester. It is worth a shot. Housing sometimes opens up in the spring semester at Fordham. My D’s friend did that last year with another school (knew as soon as he got to campus that he made the wrong choice for him, called the other school he liked a lot and got into as a freshman, and was able to start there in the spring semester). It is a longshot, but I think it’s worth a call or email for sure. You never know. Good luck.

I would suggest you Rutgers University. It has both strong English and Philosophy departments.

I second happy1–call Fordham ASAP to see if they will give you a space for spring. There are always some students who don’t return in the spring for whatever reason (the OP, for example!), and, epsecially as you are a full-pay student and previously accepted by them, you might be an attractive package for them.
