Holiday Gift Ideas for your student??

Our S mentioned at Thanksgiving break, that he would like to have a nice coat -either a trench coat or a wool longer length coat for when he needs to wear a suit in cold weather - his ski jacket doesn’t fit well over the blazer.

He may get that after Christmas during the sales, but otherwise, he is getting what is required for next quarter’s classes - a videocamera, microphone and tripod. Maybe a book or two, and a couple of dvds.

psychmomma, i got a really nice tripod a couple years ago back when I was in school at walmart. It’s really portable, folds into itself to make it relatively small - but i believe it is full size. I think it cost me about 20 bucks. Just an idea if he doesn’t have a certain one in mind.

regarding the sheets, I was actually looking at fleece sheets… but I had a customer tell me that they dont keep their fluffyness after you wash them a few times, does anyone know if those are true? I think they would be super duper warm!

DS is getting a replacement for his 6 year old computer…combo birthday/Christmas gift. DD isn’t getting much of anything as she is in Africa and we really can’t ship stuff to her. BUT she got a lot before she left. Neither are students anymore!

They both appreciated gift cards. And they liked getting new PJs every year.

My kids love the fleece sheets. A Game Stop GC always seems a good gift for a boy.

Yes…I haven’t had any trouble at all using a website that caters to teachers and students. I only need to provide evidence of my daughter’s enrollment once every 12 months to qualify for the pricing, even though I am paying for it.

We have some fleece sheets from last year; they are still very cozy.
Also recommend the gorillapod (tripod).

Just picked up a wool pee coat at Target for $59 for older S. While browsing spotted these cool laptop pillow/cushions by Belkin for $25. They have a padded bottom and flat top with an edge to keep laptop in place. The kids watch moves, do homework with the thing on their laps for long periods of time and they say it gets hot sometimes, so this seemed like a neat idea.

Also picked up a Garmin GPS in hopes that graduating son can find his way to interviews.

Will have to give Target a try. Had bought a wool Pea Coat for D from Costco, but it didn’t fit her (she swam in the small). Maybe they have smaller sizes? I can dream! Anyway, isn’t their return policy pretty decent?

I like the laptop coolers we bought from Costco. They have two fans that run with the USB port to keep the laptop units cool so they don’t shutdown or have problems because they get too hot. They were $5 off the other day.

My daughter picked up my library copy of Super Sad True Love Story during Thanksgiving break and declared the first couple of pages very funny before putting it aside and lamenting her lack of time for recreational reading. So, I think I’ll get her a copy for Christmas. Then, browsing this, <a href=“100 Notable Books of 2010 - The New York Times”>100 Notable Books of 2010 - The New York Times; I found How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe which sounds perfect for my son.

oD just sent her e-mail to Santa. She wants… top of the line KitchenAid mixer. Her hubby will soon have to look for XL shirts! yD says she needs a new guitar. Ouch. Last year, we got off the hook easily - noise-cancelling headphones ($50) and cashmere pashminas ($50) from Costco did the trick.

If they dont tell you what they want dont just buy something they wont like. I think money is the best present. And girls like when you make them homemade cookies. I dont think guys really care about cookies. And cards are no good unless there is money or a gift card in it. I think fleece sheets are a good idea. I have a really warm blanket and it has goose feathers in it. I really like it except there are little feathers floating in my room. Sometimes i wish i had two cause its cold here now. Dont get anything thats expensive cause it might get stolen in the dorm room.

I’m going to get D a Barnes & Noble gift card to buy books for her nook. If she didn’t already have a nook, I’d get her one.

She’s hoping for a study-abroad in Fall of '11, and when I asked what she wanted for Christmas, she said, “India.” After a moment, she said, “Well, a new iPod would be nice too.”

^^^ Sure, ‘India’ would make a great stocking stuffer lol. S2 just called to say he was interested in Australia in 2 years…oy.

Another idea that came to mind when they were home at thanksgiving, was favorite movies from their childhood…so I ordered some DVDs from amazon like Hook, Home Alone, Mrs. Doubtfire, Sandlot, Heavyweights and the like. Never too old to enjoy a good family movie.

We bought travel guides for Ss when they were planning major trips.

My son really likes vintage films. Netflx has gift cards.

My daughter (almost 17) didn’t ask for this, but lately when going on errands, she has gotten turned around and ended up in some sketchy parts of town, so I’m thinking about a GPS for her car.

Anyone have any strong recommendations? Would like to keep it under $200.

Aww, that is so cute. I just bought a Christmas fleece throw that is sooo soft. My D and I have been fighting over it because a)it is so comfy and b)whoever has the blanket has a warm snuggly kitty. :)

Sorry 1down12go, I just HAD to fix that.

I bought S1 a Garmin Nuvi when he took his car to school. It is a great gift for any student or parent with a car. If you see this GPS advertised for a low price, most stores will match that price. I found it for a very low price on Circuit City (now closed) website and Staples honored the price. I second the idea of gift cards for restaurants near campus. My problem is that S2’s favorite eateries don’t have locations near here - hopefully I can find these giftcards at Walmart, Target, etc. Money is always a good gift, but I like to add some small gift to it. Happy Holidays everybody!!

I’m intrigued by the “sunrise alarm clock” mentioned on the loud alarm clock thread.
